News has made it to CNN and such, so it's not a publicity stunt.

I don't watch wrestling, so I don't really care, but I will say that there is a special place in hell for people like him.

Some report I saw last night said that he murdered his wife in response to her murdering their kid, but perhaps that was an inaccurate early report

edit: yeah looks inaccurate

I was listening to a Detroit sports station, and they were saying there have been extreme cases of steroid rage where they go on a rampage. And I heard that Benoit had anabolic steroids in his house.

Its not like the steroids were even helping significantly with any kind of performance, like in a professional sport, since pro wrestling is just one big scripted farce anyway.

However, WWE is concerned with the sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County SheriffÂ’s Department and the District Attorney. During the press conference, the investigating authorities made the following points, all of which run contrary to the media speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the senseless murders and suicide:

1. The authorities stated that all drugs found in the house were believed to be legal prescriptions.

2. Steroids were not, and could not, be related to the cause of death (asphyxiation). Authorities had no factual basis to speculate as to BenoitÂ’s state of mind, and rightly did not do so.

3. Toxicology tests have not even been completed, so there is no current evidence that Benoit even had steroids or any other substance in his body. In that regard, on the last test done on Benoit by WWE's independently administered drug testing program, done on April 10, 2007, Benoit tested negative.

4. The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage. The wife's feet and hands were bound and she was asphyxiated, not beaten to death. By the account of the authorities, there were substantial periods of time between the death of the wife and the death of the son, again suggesting deliberate thought, not rage. The presence of a Bible by each is also not an act of rage.

Yes, watch out for those steroids. Don't use that inhaler! It's a steroid! It'll turn you into a mindless killing machine.

Nice attempt at a obfuscation by the WWE, but there is evidence that Benoit was on steroids: his doctor admitted that he prescribed them for him. And now his doctor is being investigated by the DEA for other crimes, as well.

I'm well aware that not all steroids turn people into the Incredible Hulk, but I thought that it was a possibility if someone was abusing the wrong kind. I'll take your word for it if that's not the case. You are obviously more informed about the subject than I am.

Now that more details have been released, it's pretty obvious that there was more going on in his personal life. At that time I made the comment, we really didn't know much other than the police had ruled it a double murder-suicide.

I dunno about you, but I'd consider the fact it was deliberate, premeditated murder ethically worse than spur of the moment "roid rage".

Steroids are BAD, VERY BAD, and kill HUNDREDS of times more people a year than ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES, and the no-good crooks who are at the bottom of this will pay for selling Chris a hormone that makes you go insane, strangle your wife and retarded child to death, tie them up, throw bibles at them, and then hang yourself on exercise equipment! The LORD shall have his way with these hellfiends in the afterlife as well.

There's a strong positive correlation between anabolic-androgenic steroid use and increased aggression, but that doesn't result in murder-suicides.

If you want to blame the 'roids, you're best to look at another side effect--there's also a positive correlation between AAS abuse and mood disorders.

Depression with psychotic complications does indeed result in murder-suicides.

Ok, so basically..

You look at the aspects of his life, and you can see the outcome?

Job where he has to maintain as close to physical perfection as TV dictates.
A son that is the opposite of what TV dictates as perfect.
A wife who wants him to stay home with his son.
Drugs which may alter your sense of being.. and inflate your aggression.

HULK SMASH PUNY HUMAN!!!!!

Seems to make sense.. And killing himself with the equipment that helped him stay so strong.. Eh.. a bit too "After School Special" for my liking.

Isn't that the usual cue for an evil twin in a coma to come take his place?

I didn't say the steroids made him do it--though there are some pretty nasty side effects--but rather pointed out how misleading it was to say that the only medications in the house were prescription, as if that proves there were no steroids involved. People at that level of competition don't buy the shit off street corners; they tend to have a doctor in their pay.

Edit: oh, and Steve, your argument is sort of silly, since alchohol and tobacco kill more people every year than, oh, Polonium, for example, but that doesn't make Polonium harmless.

Well... from what I know (which amounts to what the guys who do bodybuilding and work with me at the squadron) the bigger you are, the more angry you are apt to get. Hell, my supervisor went from 230 lbs with less than 5% body fat down to 180% with less than 8% body fat because he didnt like how aggressive he became.

A lot of big guys like that (not all, mind you) have aggression issues, and that sort of buildup of hormones that being that big gets you can cause mental problems too, correct?

Jes' sayin'.... doesnt HAVE to be the 'roids. Might just be the inability for the mind to cope with what is happening to the body.
