I'm probably going to pre-order the collector's edition. Comes with ten account keys with ten days apiece to hook your friends. A couple of ingame spiffies, and the first three months are free. Not bad, considering the extras you get and the fact that the pre-order is only $90. Its like paying $10 a month for the first three months.
I am actually looking foreward to this game, even though originally I was just not interested in more online gaming, what with work and family and all.
Also, I cant get into WoW, EQ2 lost the magic after a very short time and I dont know if I really want to play Warhammer when it comes out in a year. This thing looks to be shaping up to a decent game. I'm hoping that Sigil learns from some prior bad ideas.
For an MMOG to succeed, it has to be solo-focused first, requiring groups only for the toughest dungeons and quests. With WoW sweeping the genre, no one wants to play a game where they have to spend an hour or more looking for a group just to get through a day. It breeds class balance issues, since inevitably, there will be one class better at soloing than the others and thus will be more successful and thus other classes will be left out of groups. Ergo, you'll have a maximum of a few classes that can play and everyone else can go to the LFG channel for three hours and log off in frustration.
Sounding familiar, yet?
Item-orientation is also disastrous to a game. When one puts so much emphasis on items, what's the point of building up a character? It all comes out the same all the time. There's no variety in any kind of character if it's just based on what weapons one has.
This has even worse implications if there's PvP in the game, and I'm assuming that it doesn't, which is another reason why it will fail.
Basically, any game that doesn't have a strong solo content will fail miserably. McQuaid could get away with his appalling game design when his was the only one around. If there are better games out there, people will play them; I cite, of course, WoW vs. EQ2. One is convenient, one is needlessly complicated.
I wonder if there will be a gems-like mini game to play while you med for 3-5 minutes after each and every single fight.

Don't forget the primal beauty of non-instanced dungeons.
Do you remember Blackburrow Hollow? Do you remember sitting in one spot for hours, not getting experience or exploring or even getting so much as a coin for fear of losing your spawn? Do you remember losing that item to some Paladin who came along and solo'd your mob? Do you remember hearing "TRAIN!" and running for your life, only to die and lose an entire day's worth of work? Do you remember pointed breasts?
Brad McQuaid remembers.
But all the rest of it can just fuck right off.

Ah yes, the Sebilis experience.
Early sebilis: Wait LFG for 4 hours, log off.
Late sebilis: Wait LFG for 1 hour, discover that there's a single AoE group camping every major spawn, log off.
We Monks and Enchanters were in high demand.

Hah, yeah you got me there. Necromancers, rangers, druids, SK's, paladins, and beastlords were pretty hard to get a group with.
This is why I like fighter/warrior/tank dps classes, never a hard time finding a group and on average one little problem soloing.

Not close enough to WoW, still way too close to EQ.

Speak for yourself.
My SK always got a group, then once my name had spread in one area all the groups there desperately wanted me. I was one of those SK's that knows their role and played it damn well, with some choice spells I could out-tank a warrior and keep agro from over-spamming wizzies.
The SK who joined the group after me and asked me to stop using Plague Cloud or whatever it was called, because "it's a low level spell lol you sux", made me laugh. Some people just didn't have a clue.

Yup, same here. Disease cloud was amazing!

Just wait for reviews. I doubt anyone posting here actually beta-tests this game, and all the cool kids bash EQ or any derivative of it. Ignore the "lol EQ suckz" posts and make a decision for yourself later.

Hell, do you still like EQ1?
Both have berserkers in them. (Though admittedly, berserkers in EQ2 are one of the better classes in the game.)

I replied with "Well, do you like EQ2 or EQ1?".
I didn't say that EQ1 or 2 sucked.

I beta tested it. I didn't play it for very long, but I've still played it. Awful gameplay, bad netcode, poor performance, and wastes a ton of space (over TWENTY GIGS).
Of course, I'm biased and I never really gave the game a shot. Don't take my word for it though. You can find opinions of those who've broke NDA over the past few months pretty much echoing it. Even the hardcore think the game has issues and is nowhere near ready for release, even though the game has been in beta for far too long.

Sssssh. Don't spoil it for me! <coughs more>
Now it doesn't hold aggro worth shit any more.

Normally I wouldn't mind writing up a post on a game, good or bad. I honestly don't feel like devoting time to write up this though, especially when reviews are everywhere.
I will say this though, given another 6 months to a year it could have been a half decent niche game. Right now the game engine and servers still need to be heavily optimized, a number of zones need to be redone, and a lot of changes need to take place to the combat system. It never would have been a hit though and it definitely isn't ready for release now. Considering this it could stand to be the next Anarchy Online, though I doubt that.
With AM3 and EQ, it made it even easier.

By the time it got nerfed I would've been 60 anyway.
That's if I didn't stop playing at 35 because the game bored me to tears and I hated the "new fancy graphics" with a passion. I looked like a fucking underwear model, not a dark knight.

Problem is those who actually like the game don't want to break NDA.
Either way, I'm waiting for release to draw any permanent conclusions... Though a 20gb game will have to be damned good to justify keeping around to me. Not that I'm that short on space, but you tend to expect the stuff in that 20gbs to be top notch. Nina fucked around with this message on 10-25-2006 at 05:53 PM.
