Who else is really looking forward to this?
Sadly, it's going to be my first Dragon Quest game, the graphics and art style lured me in, but the gameplay from the demo is what really has me pumped up about it.That, and Gamespot gave it a 9/10, which is pretty damn good from Gamespot.

the themesong is stuck in my head now.
I'm sure others can vouch for other games in the series, but I have too little experience with them.
Me want DQ8 though >_< Have ever since playing the demo.
Looks like we've got a keeper

Father McKenzie probably says this to all the girls:

Shouldn't. From what I've read DQ8 has nothing to do with the rest of the series.
4 and up were all independent games (IIRC), much akin to the Final Fantasy series.
I can't wait to pick up 8. I've played the demo and the demo was great Khyron fucked around with this message on 11-15-2005 at 03:50 PM.
If you want a good DQ game, I personally recommend you grab the ROM and a translation patch for DQ6. Its the best game in the series by far. From what I've heard, 8's battle/skill system is actually a step back from 6/7's battle/class/skill system actually.
When will developers realize that CHARACTER-DEPENDENT LIMITED INVENTORY + RANDOM BATTLE ACTION != GOOD GAME?

8 uses the same Battle System that I absolutely loathed in the Lunar series. When will developers realize that CHARACTER-DEPENDENT LIMITED INVENTORY + RANDOM BATTLE ACTION != GOOD GAME?
Eh, just means you have to manage your characters a bit more. Don't let a character drop to a level of health to where they can possibly die in one turn, and make sure you always have the correct items in stock.
I was a bit worried about the limited item space on characters thing until I saw that there is a bag where you have unlimited item space. Just fill up the bag with healing stuff and then replace items as needed in between fights. Hell, almost every character learns healing spells so you aren't completely reliant on items.
Only thing that bothers me is the fact you can't revive a dead character unless you go back to town. D:
I didn't even realise that Lunar and DQ8 have the same battle system. (My problem with Lunar 1, the only one I played, was that the enemies were always insanely tough when you entered a new area. That pissed me off.) Willias fucked around with this message on 11-15-2005 at 04:55 PM.

I can handle the character dependent inventory, though that doesn't mean it's a good thing to have. Giving all of your commands at the beginning of the battle and then having every participant in the battle act in a random order is not a good thing to have. The only reason DQ8 will get away with it, is because it doesn't have Lunar's annoying "enemies level with you and get even more powerful than you" bullshit. At least if the battles in DQ8 are too hard, you can gain some levels to get past them. That wasn't the case in Lunar. Lunar punished you for levelling up.Edit: Spelling
This is the exact same way that Dragon Warrior 7 handled it. It works just fine. The only items I used with any frequency in 7, were herbs, and about an hour into the game they had been replaced with healing spells.
NOTE : THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS FROM DW7, WHICH FROM THE DEMO SEEMS TO BE THE SAME SYSTEM AS DW8 HAS.
Speed is a stat in the game that will affect when your character takes his turn. A high-speed character (In 7, class affected speed), or a character with a speed ring equipped will usually go faster than certain monsters. Some monsters have very, very high speed and will almost always go faster than you. When your speed and the monsters' is equal (Or close to being equal) then it can be a bit random as to what order you'll attack in.
The same system worked fine in Phantasy Star 4, the same system works fine in Dragon Warrior 7. It can make for some exciting moments where you're desperately trying to get that powerful hit in against the boss before he can retaliate and kill your low-on-health party member.
One of the few things I didn't like so much in 8, is that the main character is the only one who can equip a boomerang. In 7, I could give the main character a sword (More powerful specials that are more useful against different enemy types), and have one of the other party members use the boomerang for damage against all enemies. I can't do that in 8.
I do like the weapon specialization system that 8 has, replacing the class system from 7. Making it level dependant instead of battle dependant will be a huge improvement... though I really wish they had opted for the japanese 'classic style' menus, instead of the new american ones I liked DW7's menu system!

Jessica (the mage) can use whips which hit multiple targets.

Traditionally the games in the series are good and there haven't been many good RPGs as of late. People are looking forward to the game.
Personally I'd say its a rent. Its a long game, weighing in at easily over 40 hours, but there isn't a lot of replayability.

A lot of people have played the demo, and it really is orgasmic.

We were all impressed when Willias wrote:

Whips were in 7, and are nice because they hit entire groups of enemies. IE : 1 slime, 3 drakees (OR whatever the fuck they've been translated into now), she could hit all 3 drakees or the 1 slime, not both. The gayness comes in that sometimes you'll encounter 2 drakees, and 2 drakees. In which case while they're the same enemy, they're 2 separate groups, and you'll only hit 2 drakees max.
In 7, Both the main character and your main secondary character (Gabo) could use the boomerangs, which hit ALL groups on the screen. Which is far more useful, even though they tend to be weaker than swords.
Weapon types mean a lot more in 8 than they did in 7, as in 7 you could weild a more powerful axe and use it just as well as a powerful sword (Same specials would work for both weapons), in 8 you get specific specials for specific weapons.

I think it looks great, and I'm definately going to have to snag a copy
DQ8 so far is really good, and oldschool-style challenging. The voiceovers are very believable, though the king is a tad annoying at times. The animations and art are all executed quite well, in the same fashion that made Skies of Arcadia so appealing. I have a feeling this will be a great character-driven game rather (like SoA, Grandia or Lunar) than something convoluted storyline-wise. Considering that your eventual party of 4 is your only lineup, we'll certainly get a bit of development.
As far as gameplay goes, it's really a nice streamlined system that makes sense. It's very Dragon Quest, from the perspective you get to the enemies and what they do. The random battles shook me up a little bit, as I haven't played a game with them since FFX, but I'll get used to it. I mainly don't like them in the sense that it seems like a restriction or penalty to exploring, which I love to do. Speaking of which, there's a ton to be had. The world is huge and detailed, with tons of little areas to wander into that aren't particularily on your linear path. A refreshing change since so many games have been omglinear lately.
Of special note is the music. A great majority of the tracks were fully orchestrated and recorded by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, and are very well-composed and arranged. The church music in particular is really soothing and almost reminds me of several pieces by Bach.. I seriously just sat around in there and listened to the music for several repeats.
I hit my first bump last night though. The first dungeon is a cave behind a waterfall (sound familiar?) and certainly needs a bit of prep work.. I find myself needing to level up a bit and stock up on all sorts of healing items. With just two melee characters, one with a 2mp heal and a mp pool of 5.. It gets a bit tricky. So yeah, the difficulty is there, but it's welcome in an age of mediocre non-challenge in favor of "badassness."

No shit, Sherlock. It is amazingly fun though. My friend is sick of the British accents and wants to "Slap the British out of their mouths."
A drakee has been a drakee since Dragon Warrior 1. NOT A DRAKY.
A babble has been a babble since Dragon Warrior 2. NOT A BUBBLE SLIME.
Two examples of many, many name changes of long-time monsters and spells in the game. If they've left monster names alone for the past 6-7 games, why the hell change them now?
I do love the fact that it automatically places unusable items in the bag. It helps so much compared to 7, where hero/Gabo/Maribel's inventory would be full half the time due to the constant tinymedals/shards/misc shit that would just constantly accumulate.
Some of the equipment limitations seem odd, too. Yangus can't equip leather armor, yet the hero can equip a bunny tail (previously reserved for females only in the other games)? Khyron fucked around with this message on 11-17-2005 at 12:23 AM.

No offense, but you seem to enjoy everything until you actually play it for a few hours. You're pretty fickle.
Parce, if you like RPGs, 7. If you don't like RPGs, DQ8 isn't going to change your mind.
By RPGs, I of course mean turn-based console RPGs made by Square.
