Topic: Ever played PSO?

Yes, no? Personally I only tried a little bit, but console gaming [online] was a bit off for me. BUT THAT IS FOR ANOTHER TIME.

Ever heard of PSO: Blue Burst? I didn't till a couple weeks ago. http://www.psobb.com/index.php

What's this, an open beta?

If you've never played PSO or did back when it was on Dreamcast/Gamecube and enjoyed it, now is your chance to play it (again)! Of course, the computer version is online only.

So uh, check it out and stuff.

EDIT: Download info: http://boards.sega.com/psobb/viewtopic.php?t=709

Does it cost anything?

I played it on Dreamcast back in the day, not online though.

I absolutely adored PSO online on my Dreamcast back in the day. Offline was pretty fun too, but online is where it's at fo' shizzle.

I'd reccomend anyone who wants to try the game out to visit PSO world while they're downloading and start reading stuff.

The game seems simple on the outside but it's far from it in reality, even things as simple as the name of your character impacts quite a bit.

The servers seem to be up and stable now, I formed a team/guild called "Evercrest".

Anyone want to form a team? I'll be playing on the Oceanus lobby, first block with evercrest/fluffy (all lower case) as the room name and pass.

You get that when you try to patch, right?

I had to disable my firewall before it would let me through to the patch server, once I was all patched up I re-enabled my firewall and it let me play just fine.

I don't, best I have is a Joystick.

Thats not really the problem though... It's being able to face forward, it sucks, I can hardly ever see anything in front of me to react fast enough.

Also, some things to note. Doing the little battle training thing.

The guy says, use combos, fire 2 weaks then a strong charge up... Well, I can't fire to weak fast ones. It like doesn't register and stuff.

And then, all these little NPCs keep telling me I need to train up? How? I can't find anywhere to train up. And I have these disk things, that say use to learn tech, disappear when used once, but I can't use them. Most of them say MST Needed and then some numbers, what does that mean and how do I get MST?

Same for Weapons, I couldn't use Sabres for a while, and then all the sudden I could. (Playing a Ranger btw, big surprise)

And like Mike, I have this Mag thing, it has leveled up into two little Floating Things and says It has something called a Photon Beam, but It doesn't tell me how to use it, and I can't figure it out. I don't know what to do with the stupid thing.

There's some key for positioning the camera behind you. The up arrow I think it is. Helps with aiming.

Combos require timing, learn the timing of your weapon, there's like, a flow to it. Don't just mash the attack key, at the end of the attack animation, (sword blow stopping, gun shot going off, etc) hit it again and you'll do a second attack, then switch to strong for the 3rd, using the same timing.

MST is magic. You get this by levelling up or making your MAG into a MST enhancement mag, which really isn't that great for anyone except Force characters.

Weapons and magic alike have stat requirements, armor has level requirements. You get bigger and better stuff by levelling as that's when your stats go up. You can also feed your mag in certain ways to make them enhance certain stats which means you can use stuff earlier. Find a mag feeding guide.

For photon blasts, hit ctrl then whatever the weak attack button is.

Yeah, Up Arrow rights the camera, its just hard cause it gets complicated and annoying, I was hoping you were gonna tell me there was a better way.
Also the guy says change your Camera Angles a lot.. How? I have tried all the buttons I can, nothing changes the camera Angle.

It's timing dependant then? Okay, makes more sense.. Now to just figure out the damn timing. But at least thats helpful to know.

So, I will just get MST by leveling up and such then? Basically the Disks say MST Needed 75(68) or something like that, so the only way it increases is by leveling? Or do I have to do something somehow to make it go up?

Okay, thanks on the Mag thing. Ill try it when I can log back on. Seems to be down for me again now.

Also, is there any point for me using a Sabre over the Handgun anyway? Being a Ranger and All, if I equip it, it takes away my gun. Which means no ranged shots right? So Meleeing then? Not such a good thing I assume, as a Ranger?

Changing the camera angle means repositioning it behind you constantly. I've noticed that in this game the targetting is a lot more touchy than in the console versions, btw.

The timing is different for all weapons so I can't help.

Like I said, you can get MST up by levelling or feeding your mag things that increase the mag's MST, see a mag feeding guide.

You can use melee weapons early on as a ranger. Btw, just saying Ranger doesn't really help. =P All 4 kinds are fairly different.

Yeah, the targetting is what gets me, specially since the positioning is so hard.

k

Can use em early on safely but not later on safely, or do you mean just having the ability to use them early on?

There were 4 choices as a Ranger, first said it was all around even. Second was the woman one that said she was weaker damage wise bad had lots of powerfull techs and abilities. The Male Android had no techs but best power, and Female Android one was best defense and also no techs or abilities.

So I took the Female Human one for more cool stuff heh. Or at least thats the way I got it from the description.

You can use them early on safely. But later on it's not really that great. Especially when you get to shotguns. the shotguns.

That's the class I'm playing myself, they have the highest EVP which is basically block. Handy for when you can't get away.

Well, I can't comment on the controls with a keyboard. I bought a Gamecube to USB converter about a month ago just for this game and it's been working perfectly, only use the keyboard to talk.

And on to questions..

quote:
All these little NPCs keep telling me I need to train up? How? I can't find anywhere to train up. And I have these disk things, that say use to learn tech, disappear when used once, but I can't use them. Most of them say MST Needed and then some numbers, what does that mean and how do I get MST?

Most stats (Including MST) are raised in three different ways.

First and most obvious is leveling.

The second way to increase your stats are through items known as "materials" which drop randomly, there is one for each stat (Mind Material, Luck Material, etc) and they all increase their specific stat by 2. However you can only use a certain number of them depending on your race.

The race extensions are:

Mar = Male Human
Marl = Female Human
Cast = Male Android
Caseal = Female Android
Newm(an) = Male Newman
Newearl = Female Newman

And then you add your base class to the race (HU, RA, FO) to get your full job class. ie HUmar, RAcast, FOnewearl

Humans can use 250 materials
Androids and Newmans can both use 150 materials each.

There was no way to "respec" your materials in the previous PSOs, don't think there is a way in Blue Burst to do it either but that could be wrong.

The third way to raise your statistics is that little guy flying around your shoulder known as a Mag.

Mags are pets that help you out quite a bit, they gain levels just as you do but not through fighting monsters. They get levels by you feeding them various items such as monomates.

When you feed a mag an item, you'll see the four bars go either up or down, once one bar goes all the way to the right it will gain a level in that statistic as well as it's "global" level count. Each statistic level will add +1 to the global level, and mags can no longer gain statistic levels once their global level reaches 200.

Depending on how you care for it it'll evolve in different looking mags, and each time it does that it's behavior will change, it might start healing you if you get in critical health range, it might give you temporary invincibility when you encounter a boss.. Things like that.

Once your mag reaches level 10 for it's first evolution, it'll gain a "photon blast" which is a super move of sorts, you'll notice a yellow ring around a colored bulb on the top left of your screen fill up as you fight. You can do two things with this energy of sorts.

If it goes all the way to 100, your attacks will be replaced with the photon blasts your mag has aquired during its leveling. You select the attack you want and watch the fireworks.

The second thing you can do with that energy is assist your teamate's photon blasts.

Lets say you're playing with me, I get 100% photon energy and start the blast called "Varilla".

While the animation is playing, you can use your mag's energy by pressing Y (Well, that's what it is on my controller, not sure what it would be on a keyboard) and it'll send it to my mag for the attack, if your energy level was at 50% my Varilla attack will be boosted to 150% damage. Or if it's a support Photon Blast it'll heal for 150% of normal, or whatever. Teamwork is your friend!

Now, if multiple people do their blasts at the same time, they will all link and instead of simply adding to the percentage, it'll multiply making the blasts even stronger, if you have 4 people doing 4 'blasts in a chain you're pretty much gaurenteed to destroy whatever unlucky monster (Or player if you're doing PVP ) you targeted for the chain.

For your first mag, don't worry about stats at all. You are no where near hitting the statistic caps (My FOnewearl in the gamecube version got to 152 before I finally maxed mind with my custom full mind mag and +mind slot items) and you can always get more mags to raise from scratch to better fit your character when you're not in a tight budget like low level chars are.

And one thing to remember while raising MAGs, if your mag gets a level is POW, DEF or MIND it'll gain 2 points in the respective stat for your character, however it takes 2 DEX to raise 1 point of ATA, so if your mag's DEX stat is at an odd numerical value you're currently wasting a level on it.

Can I suggest one with very little people in it, say Phoebe block 3? I'll make another game right now without a pass.
