I'll post my current thoughts on the beta in the near future, right now food is more important.
It doesn't sound that great to me. "Distractions" that you have to counter while trade skilling? O_o

So, when they find the nasty monster, they can just give him a gift basket of coal, ore, and a smithing hammer, then wait for him to kill himself?
Is this what happened to Luclin? Did that old, half deaf smith in Shar Vahl slip up and shatter the world?

Now, this death thing. Is it just from damage suffered that the smith couldn't handle or is it a chance to instantly die no matter how tough you are?

Spell making too. I've seen a spell maker nearly die in front of my face while creating me some apprentice III spells for my sorcerer.
In the mean time I too will compose some thoughts on the EQ2 Beta if folks are interested. I've played most of the classes and races to at least level 10 (which is where you actually go from the "base classes" into the "specialist classes"). I'd like to see Pesco etc thoughts on it too. I wasnt too sure originally if I'd get this (seeing as how I have CoH, and to a lesser extent SWG and DAoC) that I am playing, and spreading myself over so many MMOs is hard... but I'm thinking I might get this one as well cos it really has grabbed my interest.

Tip: In Qeynos, you can get to level 11 or so by only killing monsters needed for the Hallmark quests. Seriously, there are THAT MANY "run around town and give an npc shit" quests.
Note: Hallmark quests are quests that you are required to complete to progress in the game. First is at level 6, where you must become a citizen (get a house in a city and do a quest to get a weapon, ring, and ability that allows you to port back to your home sector of town) of Qeynos or Freeport. Second is at level 10 where you must pick your class.
(Note: Archetype is at level 3. You basicly start the game at level 3. This varies from: fighter, mage, priest, and scout. Class is at level 10 where each archetype splits off 3 different ways, and subclass is where each class becomes more specialized in different spells, and splits off into 2 different choices.)

Abbikat had this to say about Captain Planet:
In all the time I've been in the EQ2 Beta I've never had any tradeskill fail on me to the extent of causing death... although I have spoken with some folks that did die as a result of Smithing. i cant recall what they told me actually happened though. I may have logs thougyh so I'll search through and see what I can find.
You know those little things that pop up while tradeskilling? (Ya know, like Noisy Distraction, Day dreaming, improper ingredients, etc.) Don't activate the needed ability for those and see what happens.

I generally miss on activating for at least 50% of those things, cos I'm sitting there watching the animations and thinking "Oooo.. shiny.. oh hell!! Distraction!! Missed it.. doh... ooo.. shiny.."
Hence most of the items I've made are not very good quality.. hehe
But then I wasnt much of a tradeskiller in the original EQ either I think my highest tradeskill was about 65-ish for fishing... and about 40-ish for cooking..

No that is SWG, were you have to grind out like 8 billion Crapass parts to make one little step up in skills, or have like a 5 metric buttloads of spare resources and grind out the most expensive parts and make master in one day

Print Screen
I'll see if I can get a few action shot. There is some lag issues right now so getting shots during HOs is kind of difficult.

Densetsu Sky Cleaves Pesco.
Take THAT!
The voice stuff is outstanding too. I was kind of weary on it when I first heard they were doing it. I figured it was just more bloat, but it actually does add quite a bit of depth to the game.

ACES! Another post by Dr. Gee:
Is the gameplay fun? I know that towards the end EQ just started to drag in terms of "hit button and go take a nap." Did they make the gameplay and combat more involving ala CoH or DAoC?
Yes they did, in fact!
Now, special attacks aren't linked together. Want to use Kick and then use Wild Swing immediately after? YOU CAN! In fact, if you perform that combination, and then follow with Taunt, you'll create a special attack that damages the enemy. Such combos are called Heroic Opportunities, and they make it so that even a Warrior is doing more than auto-attack+TV.

My problem with the heroic opportunity system is that there aren't enough openers. For example: with a Fighter (levels 3-10) you get ONE opener, and that happens to be kick. That's it. Later on, different classes get different openers, but from what I've seen, they just lead to the same combos. Sony has something here with the Heroic Opportunity system, and IT IS an interesting concept (even if it is copying FFXI and Dark Age of Camelot somewhat) but I feel that they need to explore this feature more, and do more with it. Being able to use 75% of the abilities in the game as openers to combos would be something I'd love to see.
ANYWAYS, since NDA is gone, we should all meet in game sometime. I'm Willias the iksar sorcerer (Freeport) on Beta1, and Kaldari the wood elf shaman (Qeynos) on Beta2. It'd be cool to meet some other ECers in game.
Also, a question. Sorcerers get nukes. Tons of nukes. Do Summoners get any nuke abilties? I know they summon monsters but I really haven't seen them do much else besides that.

I'm sure that there will be many, many more HOs added throughout the course of the game. More openers would be nice, but I'd really like to see more ending effects. Right now as a Brawler I can open with Kick, and link with either Wild Swing, or Power Strike, but I can still only finish with Taunt or Shout, and it produces the same effect. Would be nice to get a different effect for linking with Power Strike, since it takes longer to refresh than Wild Swing. I still love the system though, and I feel that it could be a large reason of why I will be playing this game for a long time.
BTW, I'm Ipao, the Gnomish Brawler on Beta2.
Leveling speed? Amount of levels? Suddar fucked around with this message on 10-17-2004 at 07:18 PM.

I just leech my friend's playing time at his house, since I'm not ACTUALLY in the beta, but from what I can gather from making it to level 10:
The world is very large. I'm not sure how many zones there are, but each one is about the size you'd expect from an MMO in this day and age. I want to say that Qeynos Hills is larger than most CoH city zones.
Levelling speed is bearable. Quests net out tons of XP, and even when you have to start grinding, it's not incredibly boring...yet. I want to say there's 50 levels, but I honestly don't know. However, in about 6 hours or so, you can be level 10, and already in your third class. That may just be because I was involved in the Dimension of No Escape incident, though.

Leveling speed is okay, it depends upon if you can find a good spot to camp out and slaughter stuff, or if you can get the mobs you need for quests. As for amount of levels, I have no clue on what is max level. I don't think anyone has hit the max level yet.
And Dens, what city you in?

You mean Antonica. And it feels more like West Karana to me, same with commonlands. Theres stuff in specific spots, but everything is spread out too much to my liking. Anyways, getting to level 7 can take a while if you do all the quests on the Isle of Refuge (including the Goblin Mastery quest WHICH IS A PAIN IN THE ASS TO COMPLETE), and you can actually skip level 7 and go straight to level 8 if you just kill stuff and do quests for while. Once you get to your actual hometown, you have to complete a citizenship quest (go get house, find banker, go to newbie area and kill stuff, then do a mini-instance) to get to level 7 (or 8). You can then get to level 10 very quickly by completing run-around quests (boring as hell) in the city. 6 hours though? Not sure on that. If you complete all of the Isle of Refuge quests, try 14 or more hours to get to level 10. (Note, you start at level 3 in this game if you skip the tutorial.)

It took me two play sessions at about 6 hours each to reach level 10, but several hours were spend in limbo during the Dimension of No Escape incident, as well as a server downage and a stuck character during them. Overall, I estimate 6-8 hours of actual play-time, but then, I hunted snakes, rats, and beetles for level 10, instead of doing quests.
Also, you can do the goblin mastery at anytime, so you don't really have to stick around the Isle of Refuge just for that.
The Dimendion of No Escape incident was insanely fun, here's how it went:
Upon reaching Qeynos, the first thing you do is go get your apartment, right? Well, when I clicked on the door to the inn, instead of transporting me to my room with the landlord to do her quest, I'm sent to a completely barren room, devoid of anything, even PCs and NPCs...at first. A few moments later, another player enters my room. Then another. During the course of about 2 hours, multiple players came into my room. Unfortunately, clicking on the door would not let ANYONE leave. Even camping out and back in didn't work. The few people who managed to escape did so by gating. During this time, I was in a sort of roleplaying mood, so I'd always welcome a newcomer to my very own pocket dimension...which they would never escape! BU-WHA-HA-HA-HA! It was very entertaining speaking to people and watching them try to leave but were unsuccessful. My friend sitting next to me made a comment along the lines of, "Little do they know that to escape from this dimension, they must slay the one who created it -- YOU!" I tortured several of them for a while.
Finally, my friend's brother came in to see the situation, laughed, and told me that I could just /kill myself. So, in an effort to continue actually PLAYING the game, I did so. So ended the Dimension of No Escape incident.
