There was a boy. He dreamt often of what he wanted to be. Sometimes he was a great heroic warrior, sometimes a powerful wizard... other times, a being of great evil. He did not know what his destiny had in store for him. He did not know the powers that were gathering. He did not know what his future would bring.

What he did know was that it was his sister's birthday and he still had no gift for her.

You start the game as a young boy, caught daydreaming by your father. He reminds you that it's your sister's birthday and he's not going to bail you out again on a gift. He suggests you go around town doing good deeds and he'll reward you with 1 gold piece for each one.

Throughout town, you'll find quite a few areas where you can 'do the right thing' for the good deed, or do something you really shouldn't for a bad deed and earn money from something else other than your father. It's all right, though. You're a kid, the guards won't arrest you.

I won't spoil the events, but you can use expressions (hot keyed to direction buttons) like farting and giggling as you meet people. As you gain more skill, etc, you can earn more expressions. Anytime you walk past people, they'll make comments like "There's a good lad" and "He makes his mother proud" or "I've heard bad things about that boy." This is just the start of it, too.

Long story short, you need to get at least 3 gold pieces and buy some chocolates from the Trader in town. Then you take them to your sister in the park. She tells you she had a dream about the field she's in and of you bringing her chocolates. Then raiders strike and she says something about everything happening just like the dream! You hide and watch the raiders start to kill everyone they meet.

A cutscene explaining how they kill everyone, including how your father tried to defend his kin but, being no warrior, he didn't last long. They torment and torture your sister and mother (though I'm still unsure why your sister didn't hide with you since she was right there when you hid), looking for "the boy." They would not tell them anything, so they were carted off.

Then you're back in control and your entire town is filled with corpses and the buildings are all on fire. You run back and find your father dead on the ground. Crying for a second, you hear a growl and look up, only to see a bandit charging you. There's a flash, he stops growling, and then he falls dead to the ground. Behind him, you see a large man with runes etched into his face. He approaches you and tells you that everyone is dead and if you stay, you'll soon be the same. He offers to take you away and teach you the things you need to learn if you wish for revenge or for a future of your own choosing.

With a quick teleport, he takes you to the Hero's Guild and introduces you to "the Guildmaster."

This is where your story truly begins.

I won't spoil any more of the story for you, but believe me, what I've said is nothing compared to what lies ahead. You can accept quests for money and renown. You can be good, evil, or some of both. You can do pretty much anything you want. As you complete quests, you can gain trophies - which you can use in town to show people (aka brag) for even more renown. You can take quests with 'boasts' for more rewards. A boast is a particular handicap to a quest to show how bad ass you are, like using no weapons or offensive magic (punch your way to victory!).

You can get new hairstyles, tattoos, and scars. My character went without a helmet for awhile... his face is quite scarred up now. You can increase your attractiveness and flirt with women... or men if you prefer. There's so much to this game, it's staggering.

The more renown you have, the more quests that open up to you. The more quests, the more money and/or rewards you can gain. As you increase your skills/stats, you also affect your appearance. Use your imagination on that one.

There's optional quests and required quests (required are for advancing plot)... and either can be done either the good way or the evil way... just have fun playing as you would. It can be quite entertaining. Like KotOR, I'm playing through as a good guy first, so if you want information on being an evil-doing shithead, ask Timpo - he's playing Fable on his xbox in his room as well... and he's an evil little fuck.

Any questions?

Combat is very Ocarina of Time-ish. There's lock on & circle-strafe, there's just strafing.. there's zoom-in range weapon mode, blocking, rolling, etc. If you've played OoT and done well, you'll do well at Fable combat.

With different weapons, you can add "augmentations" to them. Adding a flame augment will do fire damage and give it a flaming particle effect, etc. I enjoy it. I've got an obsidian cleaver with a lightning augmentation (and it has another slot for more more augmentation) and an obsidian greataxe (no augments yet, but has two slots). Weapons have little circle slots much like the materia slots from FF7. And the obsidian weapons look cool, too. That whole black with a sheen thing.

btw, Fable is much better than Fable.

Edit: I'd also like to add that, don't think your gona get a trophy like.. a pizza trophy. One of my trophies is a severed hobbe head. Very tasty looking.

Hmm, how does the augment system work? Can you regularly switch out the augments like in FF7, or are they on there permanently like in Champions of Norrath?

Ugh, of all the times not to have an X-Box.

They're permanent, but slotted. Some weapons can have more than others. They're more readily available than materia, and you don't learn anything from them.... it just reminded me of FFVII

For the first time in a very long time i've got a blister forming on one of my fingers from excessive button pushing. It is good.

I don't really care for melee all that much. But then, i never liked OoT melee either. I think i'm gonna have to restart as a mage/ranged person because i don't know how much of the game i'll be able to get through by brute force food/potion ingesting.

Archery is fun, but so far i haven't really encountered many areas where it work very well.

Enflame is one of the greatest attacks a hero can get, as it does good damage and also adds knockback. The price though is it costs a lot of will and EXP to get.

Well i solved my melee problem.

I found that it was less me sucking at it (i do, but that wasn't the problem i was having) and more the fact that i was still using my Iron Katana in the Darkwood.

Although magic user enemies can go and suck a dick for breaking my combat multipliers.

A lot, about 25-30, the same with pies, and they have to be in a row. Also, you work it off in 2 hours real time.

If you're a big fan of OoT melee combat, it's prolly a bit higher.

I've been hearing that the main quest is only about 10-12 hours Bajah. Most of the meat is in the "sandbox" of getting married, buying and managing realestate, trading between towns, ect.

What would be really cool is if there was a sort of random quest generator so that you can keep earning renown and doing stuff while playing in the sandbox. Hopefully this gets added in with the extra content that has been promised through Xbox Live.

In other words, its just like Black and White? During the "honeymoon" period, players can't get enough of the game. Once that period is over, they rapidly discover that the game isn't as deep as they though and that the game was incredibly overhyped?

Oh no no, Talonus, nothing like that at all. It might not live entirely up to the hype, but it's goddamn close. I just haven't been wasting time buying and renting out houses, getting married, divorced, or building a harem. Though there ARE lots of people with big ass hearts over their heads when I walk by. I could bang em if I wanted.

It's hilarious when there's a guy and a girl next to each other with hearts over their heads. The guy, in pure flamer voice, says "What.. a... man!" lol the chick's all like "Oh my, is it hot in here?"

I've been gunning for every quest and making money. Perhaps I should work on spending more time building renown and such. I loved the Arena. I wonder if I can go back. I might try that tonight.

xbox is hardware communication, not software communication. Should be all right to upgrade firmware.

But keep in mind you don't NEED xbox live. It's good for downloadable content or playing certain games MP online... I rarely rarely ever use it.

Ah... I was thinking Burnout 3.

Anyway... I'm probably (if I do go ahead and get one) not going to get Live right away; being an extra seventy bucks and all.

HOW TO READ BOOKS AND LETTERS.

I mean, if I hit the back button and try to access them through the GUI, they're not listed under the Other section like they're supposed to be... but if I use the macro/hotkey things, they're there but I cannot activate them. At all. It's starting to get frustrating.
