Ok. So I am normally a slow reader, and it took me the better part of a year to finally finish the Kushiel Trilogy by Jacqueline Carey, but now I am zooming through Issac Asimov's I-Robot and will soon be out of things to read... anyone have any good recommendations for good authors to check out in the
Light Sci-Fiction / Sci-Fantasy / Fantasy Genre's?

My favourite fantasy series is The Witches of Eileanan by Kate Forsyth.

right now I'm reading in the middle of a series by Tad Williams, To Green Angel Tower Part one. (third part of the big series)

I'm liking it. But Forsyth is still my favourite

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books. Probably one of the best series I've read in a long time. I planning on buying them all in hardcover whenever I get the monies (there are 11 books and a companion guide; not counting the D20 RPG). Also, the Wayfarer Redemption Trilogy by Sara Douglass. Doesn't match WoT by any means but still a really good series. The Runelords series by David Farland. Umm...*absentmindly trails off as he thinks of all the good books*

If you haven't, read the first three Foundation books.

Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.

George R R Martin, A Song of Ice and Fire
It is a series, first book is A Game of Thrones
Think you can go to amazon.com and read the first chapter to see if you like his writing style. If you are looking for a more cliche fantasy book though you could always go with some dragonlance, prefferably the Chronicles by Weis and Hickman, another series.

If you're looking for something with a little quirk and a sense of humor I suggest the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. It's about a wizard named Harry (Yeah yeah I know, but this one would kick Potter's ASS), that lives in Chicago and runs a detective agency. While the first book is just OK, it's a quick read and they really improve as the series goes along. Besides it has some of the best quotes I've ever read.

"You suck. You suck diseased moose wang, Marcone."

I would suggest The Black Company series by Glen Cook. Fantasy series about a group of mercenary soldiers. Some of the best overall writing and characters I've come across. It should be noted that the first three books can stand fine on their own. If you read the 4th one though, you are pretty much stuck 'til book 9 to finish it all up.

Oh. And avoid Wheel of Time like the plague if you are a slow reader for the most part. I read at a good clip and I crawled through them.

Forever War by Joe Halderman
Gateway by Poul Anderson
Starship Troopers By RAH--Hell anything by RAH

The Green Rider by Kristen Britain
The Pern Books By Anne McCaffrey--I would recommend either the orginal Dragonriders Books (Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon) Or the Happer Hall ones (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums) The Harper hall ones are novella really, made for young adults, but they are how i got introduced to the books, and I liked them.
The Wizard of Earthsea By Ursula K. Le Guin --Very good series overall IMHO
Ender's Game by Ben Bova if you have never read it
Illium By Dan Simmons
Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
Anything by Terry Pratchet
And if you see one, grab any of the Chicks in Chainmail books, it found them to be pretty funny.

I dont recall who writes them, but she does such an awesome job. Its not all that light a read though, it has midieval intrigue but written so that you understand what is going on and pay attention to the story rather than plot twists.

Its such a surprise at the end too.

Sci-Fi wise Ian Banks is good and if you haven't read any Jules Verne have a go at it.

Although I still, to this day, love the original COncept, and could see the epic as being just downright the best epic adventure ever (Even surpassing LotR in scale and purpose) in potential. That initial goal and purpose was lost ages ago, and it has since degenerated into a Soap Opera, with no real purpose outside of life filler.

The last 5 or so books have been consistantly 18months to 2 1/2 years variably. And even if I am off on the dates, even being the big fan you are (Which I was as well, rememeber!) you cannot deny the purpose of the books and its direction is long dead. It's just soap oper filler now.
