right now I'm reading in the middle of a series by Tad Williams, To Green Angel Tower Part one. (third part of the big series)
I'm liking it. But Forsyth is still my favourite

Ok. So I am normally a slow reader, and it took me the better part of a year to finally finish the Kushiel Trilogy by Jacqueline Carey, but now I am zooming through Issac Asimov's I-Robot and will soon be out of things to read... anyone have any good recommendations for good authors to check out in the
Light Sci-Fiction / Sci-Fantasy / Fantasy Genre's?
If you haven't, read the first three Foundation books.

George R R Martin, A Song of Ice and Fire

I second this reccomendation. This series tops any other fantasy series I have read.
The Harry Potter books I have been avoiding, based upon the knowledge that I would be dissappointed with the movies if I read the books first. Yeah, I know... I'm weird.
I contribute nothing

I would suggest The Black Company series by Glen Cook. Fantasy series about a group of mercenary soldiers. Some of the best overall writing and characters I've come across. It should be noted that the first three books can stand fine on their own. If you read the 4th one though, you are pretty much stuck 'til book 9 to finish it all up.
Oh. And avoid Wheel of Time like the plague if you are a slow reader for the most part. I read at a good clip and I crawled through them. Alaan fucked around with this message on 06-21-2004 at 08:18 PM.

I say avoid Wheel of Time like the plague because it's awful.

If he doesn't finish up soon, he will be the next Robert Jordan

---to read
Armor by John Steakley
Forever War by Joe Halderman
Gateway by Poul Anderson
Starship Troopers By RAH--Hell anything by RAH
Sir Apropos of Nothing by Peter David
Any of the Hammer's Slammer Books by David Drake
Any of the Honor Harrington series, best bet to start with the first one..and it's free over the net from
Baen Free Library , Might want to check out Mercedes Lackey's books too.
The Green Rider by Kristen Britain
The Pern Books By Anne McCaffrey--I would recommend either the orginal Dragonriders Books (Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon) Or the Happer Hall ones (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums) The Harper hall ones are novella really, made for young adults, but they are how i got introduced to the books, and I liked them.
The Wizard of Earthsea By Ursula K. Le Guin --Very good series overall IMHO
Ender's Game by Ben Bova if you have never read it
Illium By Dan Simmons
Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
Anything by Terry Pratchet
And if you see one, grab any of the Chicks in Chainmail books, it found them to be pretty funny.
Disclaimer: I'm just kidding, I love all living things.

Started to once, but then the guy I was borrowing from needed his book back, then college happened and then late nights at the office. I need to get back to this series at somepoint definitly(edit: spelling).

Oddly enough your not the first person to say that. My best friend cringes when he hears that title. Of course if I remember right his wife actually tried to hand me the first couple books in the series.

That is why I like him so much. In most other books, when characters are in dangerous situations, it is "I wonder how they will survive". In Martin's books, it is "I wonder if they will survive". He can create real tension.
I just wish he would hurry up and finish "A Feast for Crows"

---And I will add, if you have not had to read it for school, really read All Quiet on the Western Front, it is a very good book, and a bit eaiser to read than Slaughterhouse Five. I fail to see at least one of them is not a required read in HS, be better off reading one of those than fucking Romeo and Juliet.

Exactly
If you're a slow reader, avoid Jordan.
I dont recall who writes them, but she does such an awesome job. Its not all that light a read though, it has midieval intrigue but written so that you understand what is going on and pay attention to the story rather than plot twists.
Its such a surprise at the end too.

Sci-Fi wise Ian Banks is good and if you haven't read any Jules Verne have a go at it.
Otherwise I add my voice to the Terry Pratchett and Hitch Hiker's recommendations.

Definitely... and if you have an only so so memory, and if you dislike soap opera's... and if you like having a regular scheduled release rate... If you lack patience...
Although I still, to this day, love the original COncept, and could see the epic as being just downright the best epic adventure ever (Even surpassing LotR in scale and purpose) in potential. That initial goal and purpose was lost ages ago, and it has since degenerated into a Soap Opera, with no real purpose outside of life filler.

Wut you talking bout on the release date? Jordan almost always releases the next book 18 months after the last.

Uh since when? The first 4 or so?
The last 5 or so books have been consistantly 18months to 2 1/2 years variably. And even if I am off on the dates, even being the big fan you are (Which I was as well, rememeber!) you cannot deny the purpose of the books and its direction is long dead. It's just soap oper filler now. Faelynn LeAndris fucked around with this message on 06-22-2004 at 10:41 AM.

I agree he's gone off on too many tangents and character storylines, which Jordan has admitted several times in interviews. He said he's trying to bring it all together in the next book or two and get the monsterous thing done.

Peter painfully thought these words up:
His dark Matriels books were good to, can't rember the names or the author right now, I think it was phillip pulman or something.
Indeed it is Philip Pullman who wrote the His Dark Materials series, and the books are The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. I've only read The Golden Compass, but it was very good, and I'm indeed looking for the other two.

From the book of Mr. Parcelan, chapter 3, verse 16:
The Wheel of Time couldn't surpass LotR, since just about everything Jordan wrote was a rip-off of Tolkien.
We going to get into that argument again? Tolkien can be proven to have ripped-off countless sources for his own books. Every generation takes ideas from those that came before. Its called Human Nature.
