My friends and I are looking for a MMOG to keep us busy for the summer. We're wondering which would be the most fun, so I figured I'd ask this MMOG addict board. ^_^

Depends.

How many friends? Are they all willing to stay together for levels?

If so, I'm more willing to say FFXI. that game is great if you have a constant full group.

If not, go CoH, as it has solo capability, and is a good game itself.

FFXI has things to do BESIDES levelling.. CoH is basically fighting bad guys all the time.

Monotony can get boring, but FFXI does as well.. VERY fast.

Friend here! (wow, I haven't been here in like one or two years and it's still exactly the same people, some things never change...)

But seriously, CoH sounds really fun, but does it get old fast? I mean, are there a lot of "reward" and other craps to go after all the time or is it just "beat up the vilains"?

And FFXI sound good too, yet it looks WAY too much like EQ (and I don't want anything more to do with this one game!)

Anyway, the answer seems to be CoH, I'll probably buy that next week, when it comes out (AND at the same time as my finals are over, what a wonderful coincidence!)

I haven't gotten far in CoH, but there's a few things to do.

Run around and beat the crap out of random bad guys.

Do missions. (Which involve beating up bad guys.)

Team up. (And beat...well, you know.)

However, it's fun! The powers are fun to use, and the "loot" is power enhancements. They can be added to a power to make it better, but there are limits to what ones you can use, and on what powers.

I have yet to play FFXI, but I am enjoying CoH.

There's FAR more content in FFXI than in CoH, but it involves a significant time commitment to experience most of that content. CoH, on the other hand, requires less of a commitment and requires less work on the part of the player. If you're just looking for something for the summer, I'd recommend CoH over FFXI.

If it's just a summer thing, like Tal said, CoH is the way to go. If you have lots of time to burn however, go with FFXI. Ballista (the first Player vs. Player event) was implemented today, gonna check that out once some folks finish up with the patch.

Yes STFU, now i can finally play a summoner I honestly don't see how that can be an incredibly negative change for the game. I mean, really. PEople just begged for help with summons before. Now they can earn them on their own.

I still personally think summons should be done in a similar trial, but one per 10 levels or so.

Sucks for the people who were 'forced' to level a job they didn't want to play to 60, just to get the avatars. But yeah, after reading up on the alternate quests, they're OK to me. Just glad they didn't do that to Fenrir, ~_~;; Otherwise people would've been pissed.

Ballista is awesome D: Yes, my team got owned, but I had one of the high scores at least~

CoH. Unlike FFXI, CoH is actually FUN. Sure, if you really think about it, all you are really doing is smacking badguys around. That is all you really do in any game

Except combat in CoH is fun from the ground up, lots of stuff to do. Unlike the shitfest that was FFXI, where you just stand around while your avatar autoattacks while looking at mithra panties. Bo-ring! Not to mention that CoH has really nifty story arcs.

Go with CoH. Character customization = badass. There is an insane amount of customization on powers. (Pick two power sets to start off, with one power in each set, then you can customize those powers further with enhancements, THEN when you get level 6, you can get an ADDITIONAL bonus power set, that lets you fly or jump and run better, or increase stats, etc.) Areas are big, lots of room to explore, and YOU CAN SOLO. That doesn't mean however, that you'll be able to get through the game (max level, beat all missions) with your one character. I've seen situations and missions that require a full "team" (group) of heroes to complete.

Quite frankly, this game is badass.

Addy, San d'Oria found a really good tactic for dealing with my monklyness raping their entire team We still completely hosed them last night though.

They'd bind me facing a PLD, while a DRK uses Soul Eater behind me. Bastards.

And this patch was crazy good. As a Samurai, I'm suprised Kael isn't jumping for joy that his job finally has it's role back, as master of weapon skills.

I want CoH, but of course it will be too expensive. And I've had bad runs on MMORPGs lately. FFXI was great, loved it, was uber cool.. for a few months, then it just dull, redundant, repetative, and boring. Plus you couldn't actually play to have fun because you'd be ostrasized for making choices that were not optimized.

SWG was really cool really fun, for like a month, but after a month... Why play anymore, there was nothing interesting to do. It was probably the biggest "Grab You" game, cause it did, but thats all it did and it couldn't back it up.

I've sworn off WoW, cause I know it will probably be good, but don't wanna get burned by an MMORPG again, and CoH is going the same way.

But it looks so coooooooooool. Cept for the fact I bought and played Freedom Force, and it was pretty lame. So I'm wary in general of it.

I finished the coolest mission ever in CoH a little while ago. I had to go into some sewers to recover stolen corpses and kill a boss. Zombies, zombies, zombies. Often in clusters of four or five. Luckily I had just upgraded the damage enhancements on my two main attack powers so I could take them out in a one-two strike without any of their buddies noticing (zombies is stupid). There was the occasional reaper/mortificator (think evil bucther-surgeons with poison crossbows and meat cleavers) that arn't stupid but they only ever had one zombie with them. There are full bodybags laying around you can recover for exp and influence (money). Finally I reached the boss, Digger. Smart-zombie chick in a full body leather leotard but is woefully unsexy. My attacks didn't deal much damage but they drained her endurance very quickly so she couldn't perform any attacks save for a sissy little girl punch, so a potentially tough fight was made very, very easy.

I got half of a level's worth of exp and about 3.5k influence after selling all the unneeded enhancements I found.

I don't know how to be sexy. If I catch a girl looking at me and our eyes lock, I panic and open mine wider. Then I lick my lips and rub my genitals. And mouth the words "You're dead."

CoH isn't really a MMORPG in my opinion. I'd prefer to call it a Massive Multiplayer Online Action Game. It isn't anything like EQ, DAoC, or SWG. All your powers are chained together in combos and such, with short wait timers before you can use the attack again. Also, while this game does have support heroes, all characters will get some sort of attack power for whuping ass.

And you just have to admit, hopping from rooftop to rooftop looking for gansters to beat the crap out of is just way more cool than running and pulling to a safe point in a zone.

I give CoH a big thumbs up. I'll probably get the game on the first of May myself.

You choose a primary and secondary power line (up to four more in power pools, which have stuff like travel powers). And those primary and secondary power lines have nine powers each, for a total of eighteen. And unlike other mmorpgs, those attacks actually scale as you level up. The power you got at level 1 will still be useful at level 50 ^-^

Ok, you're an exception partially. I'm just saying that most people posting against it stopped playing pretty quickly. FFXI is a good game and there's far more to it than CoH right now, it just takes a lot of time commitment on the part of the player.

I am kind of strange like that. You could have the most in depth, involving world and story... but if the actual combat sucks, I will hate it

CoH may be shallow (for now, at least), but the base concept is very fun. It is easier to build upon a fun foundation, then try to add in fun later ^-^

Coolest mission I've done was against the Vahzilok (zombies) as well. On a routine sounding mission, they raid a chemical shipment. Thinking nothing of it, I do the mission as normal. Next mission, I'm sent to stop an attack on an office building. Some people were killed (not in real time, just set as body bag objects), while the rest were panicking. So I save the citizens, and when searching a body bag, I find a Water Authority ID badge. The plot thickens.

So I takes it to my contact, who immediately suspects they're going to poison the water. She sends me to beat up some zombies on the streets for lead. When I kill one of the reapers (alive surgeons who make the zombies), he has a scrap of paper with gibberish on it. After that, I get sent to do some unrelated mission while my contact finds out what it means.

And finally, the last mission of the series ends with me going to the sewer junction noted on the paper, which is where the purifiers are kept. I go to stop Slaughter... an eidolon with radiation powers. An eidolon is a boss level mob, a zombie with full awareness crafted from the bodies of fallen heroes.

So I kills him, stop the poisoning, get tons of experience, but the best part? They let me keep the ID badge as a souvenier, complete with a retelling of the arc when I click on it.
