As many of you know, we are currently conducting an internal Alpha test for World of Warcraft. Our goal for this Alpha test is to provide the best possible experience for players when the Beta launches in early 2004.In order to accelerate the testing process, we recently allowed a small group of external testers to play the game. During this process, a collection of files was leaked to the Internet. While these files contain alpha content from the game, they are not fully playable and therefore do not convey the experience that World of Warcraft will provide when it is released.
We are currently investigating this matter and will take serious action against those involved.
As always, we appreciate the interest and enthusiasm that players around the world have for World of Warcraft, and we look forward to delivering a massively multiplayer game unlike any you have ever experienced. Until then, we ask that you refrain from sharing any content that doesn't come directly from Blizzard Entertainment.
Lastly, we would like to announce that sign-ups for the World of Warcraft Beta test will begin at the end of this month. Stay tuned to www.blizzard.com for further details.
Let's all pray for ourselves that we get in

Clearly, you need to kill Mort and JooJoo.

I misspoke. Clearly, Darius has to give you a job squashing gophers and Mortious a job lubing up girls at anime conventions to distract you from signing up.

My plan is a success; that lobster will go straight to your thighs, and then you'll be sorry.

Not really, no. It's just that it'll suck.

They both really suck. But more in the terms of a MMOG sucking in the way that there's nothing new in it besides the setting.

But WHAT a setting!
And I think the new gameplay characteristics that make each class unique (beyond spells and such) rock. Like the defensive stances for warriors, the finishing moves for rogues and what have you.

The setting is the only thing it has going for it. The main reason I'd play it would be to explore the Warcraft world. But after that, it's just another MMOG.
And not to be rather mean, but those types of things have been done before and such. I just see nothing new at all being done in WoW that'll make it stand out gameplay wise from any other MMOG. The setting can only take a game so far.

Combat looks more than exciting. Similar to DaoC, except way cooler.
They also have these nifty micro dungeons, they're attempting to make downtime a minimal (at E3 or something, someone was watching a Blizz rep play, and asked if he had some form of HP regen on. He said it was normal regen), and the classes look awesome and unique!
They're also polishing it up way more than any MMORPG (to my knowledge) has done before release. [ 01-08-2004: Message edited by: Cowboy Darius ]

It'll be exciting for the first hour. In the end it just turns into finding the best set of manuevers to use, rinse and repeat. In no MMOG I've played, be it EQ, DAoC, FFXI, AO, etc have I found the thrill of combat to last beyond the first hour of playing. There's only so much to be said for hitting attack, hitting your attack styles or such, and having fun with it before it turns into tedium.

whoa hey looks like we're different!
On a sidenote, outside of combat, what else is there to suck up your time in an MMORPG? With lackluster combat, there's very little. [ 01-08-2004: Message edited by: Cowboy Darius ]

Why don't you ask EQ players that question?

Micro dungeons have been done in a way by EQ already. Instanced dungeons and such. It's not that great of an idea, IMO. But that's neither here nor there.
Keeping downtime minimal is nice, but it's been done by a lot of MMOGs too now. Every MMOG is striving for it, because less downtime = easier to keep people's attentions on the game and playing longer.
The classes from what I've seen, are only unique as far as the fact they have some twist based on the setting. A Rogue is a Rogue in the end, and a Warrior is a Warrior.
It'll only end up more polished because Blizzard never releases anything until they're satisfied. Which while nice, means it'll lag behind in terms of graphics and technology if they don't release it quick enough.
I still haven't seen anything that makes it unique besides the setting.

Could be on us being different. But I'm pointing out flaws as I see them.
Tradeskills, raiding, non combat quests, etc. There's plenty to do. But it all revolves around the systems for everything being good.

So what makes WoW's systems un-good?

Well then; how would any upcoming MMORPG be unique by your standards?

Tradeskills are tailored to improve combat performance (mind you, I havn't played every MMORPG out there, so there may be exeptions; but from all the ones I have played, this is true). Raiding is combat, da? Non combat quests give you rewards that will most like give you a piece of armor, or a weapon, xp, or gold. All of which help your combat. I sure wouldn't want to do a quest that didn't reward me with anything besides story line. That's what books are for. [ 01-08-2004: Message edited by: Cowboy Darius ]

Many already released MMOGs have tried to be unique. SWG is the most unique one out there, although kinda crappy at times. It is THE most radically different. FFXI is nearly a clone of EQ, except in the fact you can switch classes which is a great gimmick. E&B, while a failure, tried to be different as well.
I'd just like to see less games revolving around EQ clonedness and more on their own merits. It's getting hard to, but it's possible. One way (keep in mind I've only marginally read through WoW's information to get an idea of what it's like, I don't like reading that in depth about something that won't be out for a good while) is having some form of naval combat ala WC2. THAT would make the game pretty fun IMO, similar to raiding in EQ. You'd need quite a few people and it'd be fairly interesting running/fighting with and on a ship when different things can happen.
