Marth does more damage if he hits with the tip of his sword, as he's a fencer. Roy, on the other hand, does more damage if he hits with the middle of his sword, as he's supposed to wield a broad-sword type weapon.
There isn't much of a difference between them, but it's there.

power isn't always victory, tho...I wish I had the flaming up attack of roy.
the timing of how Roy swings his sword is much closer to the timing on Link and i'm able to get a good feel for the swings as Roy. with Marth i just can't get the timing right.
but of course, Adult Link > all.
As for speed, his attacks are a little quicker but not so much as to give him a large advantage over Roy. (In my opinion, the speed difference is only a small bit bigger than that between Dr. Mario and Mario)
Also, even though Marth can dress up as Elvis, the true king is Roy.

Mr Gainsborough obviously shouldn't have said:
Roy's Flame Sword attack can instant KO nearly any enemy when done at full strength. Marth's hold B attack is significantly weaker. As for speed, his attacks are a little quicker but not so much as to give him a large advantage over Roy. Their hold B attack does exactly the same thing at full power. Instant KO. And if the enemy walks into it when it *MAKES* you release the charge, they deserved the instant KO.
The difference is that Marth's does a lot less damage until the final bit (And it does less damage at the end, as stated earlier), however, Roy's takes MUCH MUCH longer to build to full, and if you DO let it build to full, you take about ~10% damage.
I prefer Marth, only because Roy NEVER touches me.

And the counter is easily countered by a grab.

Yeah, I know. Unless they do it in mid-air. It's near invunerability in that case.

Link? You mean the guy that any tard can use and win with?
I prefer skill, and attacks that don't take up half the god damned screen, thanks. [ 06-23-2003: Message edited by: Delphi Aegis ]

Your Link envy is so obvious. You don't even make an attempt to hide it.
Any tard can seemingly use Marth or Roy very well, but people good with Link are in short order around here. [ 06-23-2003: Message edited by: Tegadil ]
Down+B. Your attack is not only countered, but I hit you again, and you tend to die.

Uh...Marth's Shield Breaker is NOT an instant KO. I have gotten it off at full power on numerous occasions and only did minimal damage and knockback.
Perhaps if it hits with the tip of his sword it is, as I didn't know that their damage depended on where the sword impacted the enemy.
Either way, Roy is also pretty fast in his own right.
The biggest two differences between the two are Roy's power, and Marth's light-weight.
Roy is too heavy and has hardly any recovery ability at all. He doesn't get knocked as far, though.
Marth, on the other hand, Has much greater recovery, but get knocked much farther.
I'd say that they are fairly balanced, and it's really more a matter of playstyle and preference.

1) Ganondorf
2) Dr. Mario
3) Shiek
What is the most efficient way of getting the "No-Damage Clear" Bonus.
I got to the 12th fight in All-Star mode with DK without taking damage, then Falco shot me...the ground pound was working so nice too.
(Trying to get the Diskun trohpy if you hadn't guessed...this is last bonus.)

Mr Gainsborough had this to say about Duck Tales:

Don't get hit.
And really, what the Marth vs. Roy thing comes down to, is this:
Speed vs. Strength
Marth is way faster then Roy, however Roy is stronger.
PS, all the characters need skill to be good with them. Link has his disadvantages, and it's slowness and lack of JUMP.
The most unbalanced character is still Fox however. He has speed, and tons of strength to boot. He can knock you out most anytime.
Peach rawks, so does Sheik/Zelda (Switching is important )
And honestly, in my opinion speed is the most important thing in this game. (That includes with attacks, so Cpt. Falcon is out cause man, are his attacks pitifully slow.)
Only one good slow character, and that's Samus due to her great evasion.
