I need suggestions!

I'm going to save up for a handgun. I don't need a hand cannon that's going to put a hole the size of a football through someone's bullet proof vest at 100 yards. It's not even for protection at all. I just want something cheap, yet still decent, that I can take to the range every once in a while and let off a few clips.

You smell that? Do you smell that? ...Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed for twelve hours. When it was all over I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory.

Taurus makes a good line of fairly inexpensive handguns. Thier quality used to be pretty low but in the past few years they have really improved. My father owns a PT40 and both My mother and I own one of thier revolvers.

What price range are you looking at?

A few more comments and questions.
Do you want an automatic or a revolver?

Look for something in the 9mm range. Ammo is very cheap and for someone who hasn't shot before it is a very easy round to control. Recoil is light even in small guns.

Don't get something to small or to large. Small guns are made for concealment. The downside is that you have increased felt recoil and if you have larger hands like I do then it can be hard to hold them properly.

Larger guns are great for hunting but normally are a lot heavier. Now the up side to this is that recoil is almost nothing. The dawn side is that a heaier gun can be harder to shoot for long periods of time since... well they are heavy.

A good Mid sized gun has the best of both worlds. And in a mild caliber like the 9mm you will have a cheap, fun, easy to shoot gun that you can also use as a personal defense weapon if you ever feel the need.

Ok. Automatics normally run a bit more than a revolver. However as I said before it does sound like Taurus is your best bet.
if you look at thier PT series of handguns they have them ranging from 9mm up to .45ACP. Cost should be under $500.

Also you can check out www.gunbroker.com I havent' been on there in a while but I used to use it for all my firearms auctions. Anything you buy will still have to go through your local dealer for paperwork and the background checks etc.

If you just want a pistol fo plinking go with a .22. Ammo is Dirt cheap, and recoil is Nil... great gun for beginners but it scores a 0 in the self defense catagory.

Suggestions for .22's:
~ Anything Made by Ruger / Super Single Six, MK-2, etc...
~ Anything made by Smith & Wesson Namely the Titanium revolvers they have been turning out recently.

As far as 9mm (etc..) handguns go .45 is the most fun to shoot in my Opinion but guns can be pricey... Ive seen some sub 400 sub 300 full size 1911 Copies on the market but I have no clue about their quality. The names in 9mm are Baretta, H&K, Sig, Glock, and Ruger, Ruger being the cheapest but I would stil recommend any of them. You may hear bad stories about the Ruger PT's that Azizza mentioned but that is a thing of the past, the issues have been resolved and the guns are great shooters.

If you dont want a .22 Id highly recommend a Semi over a revolver, and go with a combat handgun. There generally the best to learn with and the most fun to shoot. Go Out and look at options, come back and tell us what you liked and we can tell you much much more.

Another Unsolved Mystery is goin' down in history.

I'd suggest a revolver if you don't have any previous experience with handguns. They are far easier to use and care for than a clip. You don't clean an auto or semi auto correctly, the gun will jam.

What was that gun that was recently released that's supposed to be the most powerful handgun in the world or something? It was on The Daily Show last week.

To split more hairs -- when a handgun is referred to as an "Auto", it means "Autoloader", not "Automatic."

Anyway!

Glocks are fairly cheap, too. Check gun shows, and try to go for a used piece. It'll be cheaper.

And they're magazines, not clips.

You can probably pick up an old com-bloc Makarov or CZ pistol for under 200 bucks at gun shows.

Just as an example, you can buy a CZ 52 in 7.62x25 for under 200 dollars -- if you look in the right places, you can probably get one for around 120.

Why do I get a feeling of impending doom because of this topic? I mean, we have a man who works at McDonalds (not derisive), and that alone is enough to make a person want to go ona killing spree. On top of that, he has to deal with fucking tourists...

On a wholly unrelated note, I'll be watching the news in the next week or so for copious violence on the Strip.

The Colt python is one of my favorite Revolvers.

Very nice reliable, and good looking gun.

Great thing about a .357 is that you can shoot .38s through it as well.

Why anyone would use a trigger lock on a gun that's IN A SAFE is beyond me.

Of course, I don't see why anyone would use a trigger lock period (save if there are children in the house), but I digress.

Also if you want to go cheap for ammo try a firearm in .380 or a 9X18(Makarov). Both calibers come in several nicely priced firearms and have decent take down power for their size. I know Bersa Thunders(.380 and 9mm variants) go for under $200 around here in Texas and it was not bad feeling in my large hands. Also you can grab Russian made .380 and 9X18 for $5.25 for a box of 50. For that you can get 9mm for the same price also online by the Russians. I have seen some Browning HP on some sites for good prices also(around $200), pretty nice 9mm semi. My Beretta 92FS Stainless is a nice shooter but with a tag just under $600 it is not a cheap gun, glad I traded for mine. The CZ guns are VERY cheap and great performers. Almost bought a CZ-100 at the last gunshow I went to.

AIM Surplus used to have some SIG 226 and Star B for sale but looks like they ran out of them. JoeKen.com has the CZ 52(7.62X25mm Tokarev) for 129.99 and the Ballester Molina(.45 acp) for 179.99. Don't forget you have to have a firearm shipped to a FFL holder and pay a transfer fee also(around $25) ontop of the shipping.

Hopefully the Python works for you. Don't shoot CCI .38 spl. Some of the dirtiest and underpowered ammo I have ever put thru my S&W.

Also if this is gonna be a personal defense firearm, use factory ammo. No need giving the family of some thug that tried to rob/maim you any leeway in their lawsuit that will surely follow.
