You don't have French horns in a marching band, you goof
You have mellophones, because they have bells that can point toward the judge's/announcer's box. Just think a more compact trumpet with a larger bell and you have a mellophone.
What do you play by the way, Furb? [ 09-14-2002: Message edited by: Lyinar Ka`Bael ]

Naimah impressed everyone with:
I was going to try out, but the deal is that if you play brass he pretty much won't let you be DM due to the fact that he values the brass sound a hundred times more then the woodwind sound. Needless to say we almost never do well in competition, but we are one of the favorite bands in the area.
I know what you mean... One of my tuba player friends tried out also. The band needs them, so she didn't have much of a chance.
That's kind of silly. He could more than spare a couple of brass given the setup you guys have there.
But how the HELL do you move on the field? We have a band here in Indy that is roughly about 350 and when they get on the field, they can barely move. How big is the drumline, pit and colorguard, and how many actual marching players do you have? [ 09-14-2002: Message edited by: Lyinar Ka`Bael ]

We march 390 with auxilaries. Our show this year is mostly brass block trixies in the front with the wood winds doing arcs in the back. We will probably have a movie for dl on our web page in like two weeks that will have our show.
The drumline is 7 snares, 3 tenors, 5 bases, and some ungodly number of cymbals, we like cymbal flashes. I don't know how large the color guard and drill team are. Yes we march the drill team in addition to our color guard in the contest drill just to be that much more obscene.
You can have it on a wheeled cart and the rest of the band can pull it via rope & harness.
As a bonus, give the piano guy a whip to give the band encouragement when they begin to slouch off a bit.

I always wanted to march a turntable.

Naimah probably says this to all the girls:
Losing one brass has a much bigger impact on sound then losing one woodwind.
Yes, but that just means the other brass can be that much louder. We all loved blaring our brains out getting as loud as we possibly could without drowning out everyone else at contests.
I think your teacher is just being silly, and that's really unfair. Maybe if you only had a handful of brass and lots of woodwinds, that would be one thing. But you have *plenty* of brass. Saying someone can't be drum major in a band that size cause they're brass is moronic in my opinion. We had a lot smaller of a brass section and we did just as well when I was chosen.

THAT'S MORE THAN 2/3 OF MY ENTIRE SCHOOL. THAT'S MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL.
Jeez man.
I'm sure you guys take a step and change the entire formation.
That's just too many people to have marching on the field, plus color guard needing room to swing their flags around.
I wouldn't mind seeing your drill charts sometimes, though, to see what sort of formations you can pull off when you're that crowded.

Okay all better now.
49 PEOPLE!
Let me tell you, beating out bands twice your size is a really good feeling... still... I always wanted the chance to play in a large band.

Nothing like hauling ass from one side of the football field to another trying to keep that damned bell pointed RIGHT at the judge's box *and* keep playing properly, is there?
We had about 180 marching, so not quite that small, but we still had our work cut out for us. [ 09-14-2002: Message edited by: Lyinar Ka`Bael ]

And you guys would be amazed at how much room there is on the field when the brass is put into a block the whole time.

When you're marching 49 you'd better be the cleanest thing the judges ever see because they see it all.
