My computer is certifiably deadf.

Have tried the following just now:

Unplugged and plugged in various combinations of my 3 hard drives

Unplugged and plugged in either or of my CD-ROM/CD-RW Drives

Unplugged and plugged in various combinations of my 3 sticks of ram

Unplugged my network and sound card

Set bios to various settings, including "fail-safe" settings

It wont take a windows install at all. It is really and truly dead.

It was a great system while it lasted *sniffle*

But...must move on.

Looking at Alienware systems, and it seems that Best Buy carries em. (I know, I could just rebuild mine, but, well, I think I want some tech support this time. Im sick of shit breaking simply because I built the system. Hehe)

Looking at this one and this one:
http://www.bestbuy.com/ComputersPeripherals/Specials/Alienware20.asp
http://www.bestbuy.com/ComputersPeripherals/Specials/AlienwareAurora.asp

I know thats more expensive than what it would cost me to build the same thing...

But...well..opinions? suggestions as to other systems to look at? Suggestions on parts that are quite a bit cheaper than either of those systems?

Because I'd build it myself, and it'd be one fast computer.

Well, waiting on the insurance company to call.

Since my system IS covered, they may reimburse for a new system.

If they are, im gonna go all out. MAYBe I will take 2k and build an uber system...who knows?

OOH thats a fun game.

You have 2k to spend. show me the system you would build!

Doesn't sound like it is to me, either... but since the insurance company won't confiscate your "dead" computer...

You can have a spiffy second computer after you figure out what's wrong with it.

Edit: looking around for UBER TOP OF THE LINE stuff to put together a system for ya.

First thing.
Dont' waste your money with Alienware.
Build your own. Buy a dell. Buy a Gateway..
Do not buy an Alienware. They are one of the biggest Ripoffs on the market today.

My advice in your case is to salvage what you can from yours and build from there.

proposal on what to try next, then?

Just an FYI on what I have tried so far, as suggested by various people:

plain install
copy files to hd then install
fdisk /mbr
unplug/plug in 3 different HDs
unplug/plug in 2 different CD drives
Unplug/plug in 3 different sticks of ram
Unplug sound/network card
changing various bios settings, trying fail safe in bios
Underclocking processor as low as 1050 MhZ
PS Swap

Nothing has worked.

there could be various reasons. the easiest fix may be just getting a new hard drive.....

Wont take it as in wont even let me install it.

Stops on the Windows setup screen where it says "Setup is starting windows" in a grey bar at the bottom of the screen. The screen itself is blue. stops before it displays the EULA or whatnot and you hit F8 to agree.

(1) Boot off of a Win98 Floppy.

(2) BEFORE YOU START INSTALL, run the 'lock' command.

(3) Start your install.

get a win98 boot disk.

boot

run the install off your WinXP CD.

I do this for 98, NT, NTAS, 2k, and 2kAS... I assume it still works for XP.

Also, make sure the Virus protection shit in your BIOS is turned off. That caught me a couple of times.

you can install XP even if you boot with a win98 floppy. the floppy is just to get you to DOS so you can do the lock command, i believe.
