This new method with the image file takes too long. Is there some way to disable this?

Yes, there is.
I don't know HOW, exactly, but my integrated burning never worked to begin with. Nero works fine, so there is a way.

Get the new Nero.
Yes we all know new things are bad after all.
So you wasted at least 100 dollars and instead of downloading new drivers you just uninstalled the OS.
I can't picutre throwing away money like that.
I have one problem with WinME. That problem being that one time in five, when I shut down, the screen shuts off but the power stays on. I have to shut it off by holding in the power button. That is the only thing that I run into that does not work 100% in WinMe.
I had Nero once before. Sorry, but it sucks.

You've never tried some hardcore CD burning, have you? Try copying something with SafeDisc on it... Or a binary image... [ 01-15-2002: Message edited by: Tier ]
That's how much thought I give to your opinion.
My opinion, however, was based upon personal experience. I used Nero, and it sucked donkey balls. And yes, I knew what I was doing.

Yes.
I have a mat, with conclusions on it, that you can.. y'know.. jump to. Looks like you could use one.

I've been nice and not entered a flame war in here, but calling him 'stupid' for dumping WinXP is like me calling everyone stupid for using WinME/98/NT instead of Win2k.

Not really...
It's not like he's getting his money back for XP. He's already spent the money and he's just going to let it rot on the shelf until he musters up the patience to download a few fucking updates so that he may enjoy the beauty that is Windows XP.

Still the same. He's not willing to suffer with the bullshit of the OS with the configuration he's got. He's going back to something that works. Same for most 98 people that tried jumping to Win2k when it shipped. Incompatabilities in hardware and software, grief of adjusting to a new OS standard, etc, etc.
Eventually he'll probally get around to installing WinXP again...
DEAR GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS SO CRUEL!!!
I could MAYBE understand using that logic if you were on dialup in Antartica... but CABLE? It probably took him about 3x longer to uninstall XP than it would have to fetch said software updates...
Jeez...

I'm sorry, I happen to SUPPORT A PRODUCT that didn't see a Win2k version for 9 GOD DAMNED MONTHS. People calling in getting pissed because they can't run their software on Win2k the NANO-FUCKING-SECOND it hits their local warez site or local CompUSSR shelf.
You stand on the other end and you see how much you like dealing with the "Latest And Greatest Shit Bill Gates Decides To Flush Down The Pipe"....
I'm sorry that you had to deal with the complete idiot that is the general populous... heh... but that doesn't mean that Waisz's downgrade was justified..

It's justified to him and him alone. And that's ALL it needs to be justified to.
And I wasn't dealing with warez kiddies.... I know that several people that called in during that 9 month span probally were using a pirated copy of the OS, but 75% of the calls I take in a day are Fortune 500 and 3 letter Gov't agencies... I don't deal with the "low end" of anything. And THESE are the assholes who call up and bitch. The same assholes that probally bitched at their ISP because they didn't have Win2k drivers available for the internal DSL cards they were shipping out (I know the ISP I was with at the time was playing hell with thoes calls). Just because it's new and "Lord Gates" has blessed it doesn't mean that everyone should bow down and install. It also doesn't mean that someone is just a fucking moron for NOT liking it and removing it. If this were the case I could call most of the people on this board fucking idiots for not installing and using the latest and greatest kernel handed down from "Saint Torvalds".
You're starting an 'OS Holy War' that has no winner.
See, I can't ever argue my point without really pissing somebody off. I have the debate skills of the Golgothan.
Annnyway...
Anything I could think of to write here would be complete and utter dogshit. I'm tired. The tardy bell rings in 5 hours. I'm going to bed. Goodnight.
I'd also like to apologize for the behavior of my ass. It has been spewing out pathetic arguments recently. I really should stop letting it talk for me...
Calling someone a moron because they don't like something and decide to make a change isn't proper. What about the people who bought EQ and didn't play beyond their first 30 days but went back to UO? Are they in the same boat? Personal Preference is a bitch at times....
When I have the money, maybe I'll buy a sound card, but other than these two application issues, I'm VERY pleased with WindowsXP's look, feel, usage and performance.
I have fewer issues with XP than I did with ME or 98. And it recognized my CD-burner immediately; I didn't even need to install the software that came with it, since the OS does a fine job all by itself.
Of course, I'm one of those strage people that doesn't buy cheap-ass components and expect them to work as well and as quickly as industry standard stuff.
As with the rest of life, you get what you pay for.
Sorry, but it's a) not MS's job to write drivers for other companies' hardware and b) not even remotely possible to test any OS on every possible hardware/software combination.
Reminds me of the dumbasses on Whineplay screaming every time a new patch came out. [ 01-16-2002: Message edited by: Bloodsage ]

Same for any other company.
What kind of second rate company doesn't bother to take the time to update drivers for new a New OS that has been out for months and was in Open beta for months before that?
And again, It's Personal Preference. If he didn't like the performance and was annoyed that he had to go out and obtain more drivers (if the drivers existed) then that's HIS call. If he wanted to go back to Win98 because he understood it's functionality better and already had all the drivers on hand, that's HIS choice.
Again, this is being pushed to the standing of an 'OS Holy War' for no reason. What's really funny is that you've got a holy war against the OS itself....
But it's just plain stupid to blame the OS because it doesn't come with a driver for every single piece of hardware in the universe, or that it doesn't run every program in the universe perfectly.
In short, the OS isn't the problem.
There's quite a difference between:
1. I don't like cookies, and would rather not have one
and
2. Cookies are stupid, since I don't like them
Don't you think?

I just got pissed that everything I tried to do required a patch/update, so rather than trying to do that all day, I shut it down for a bit so I could come back to it this weekend when I had the time to deal with such things.

Just KIDDING!
Seriously, there is an HCL list everyone should check out BEFORE upgrading to WinXP.

No one bothers checking the HCL unitil they call tech support. And then they only check long enough to lie about what's in there....

I have no idea what the hell you mean by that, but I certainly don't like the tone.
Are you, as it seems, honestly telling me that because someone else did something stupid in another instance entirely, my reasoning is therefore faulty?
Perhaps you should look into crutches--for your braen!!!!111111
--Satan, quoted by John Milton
Humans are not logical creatures, they're emotional. Some have learned to control this, and life is better for it.
Your agrument becomes faulty because of the emotional aspect that you're not looking at. This is the same thing that causes people to flame Linux when their Winmodem doesn't work or when other hardware labled "Windows Only" doesn't work. They blame the OS. They compare it to Windows and bitch that if it's (Linux) is such a superior OS then why can't it find their modem like Windows did. Linux takes the blame when it is clearly user/hardware at fault.
Same thing applies here. By god if I can get this working under Win98 without problems then WinXP should be EASIER since it's more up to date and contains 394875938579385 buzzwords.
People are stupid, yes. Excusing that as natural is bullshit. It's neither natural nor inevitable.
My dog has little choice in his actions, because of instinct and conditioning. Worms have no choice at all.
People do have a choice. They can choose to behave stupidly. Or they can choose to use their brains.
I feel not the least inclined to accept, reward, or otherwise coddle people who choose the former.
Nor does the fact that a lot of people are stupid have anything at all to do with the soundness of my arguments.
--Satan, quoted by John Milton
It can't be done. A person is Intelligent. People are dumb, panicky animals. This is why we have the "law of common usage"... if common usage is stupid, and there's a ton of that usage, and it's not harmful, just stpuid, then it's allowed to endure. It's an extension on Murphy. It could go wrong, it did go wrong and now more wrong is being done.
I don't have to convince people of anything, for example, because there's this little discipline called "logic" that verifies, with strict rigor, everything I've said. In case you haven't heard of it, it's been around for thousands upon thousands of years.
Damn, dude, the Dark Ages are over.
Just because people choose to be stupid does not invalidate logic. Arguing that, simply because people do things, those things must be the right things to do is . . . uninformed, both academically and philosophically.
Emotions exist, yes.
They do not, nor have they ever, invalidated reason or logic. They may overrule such considerations in certain individuals, but that is not the same thing. Rather, it is evidence the individual in question is acting foolishly.
Emotion, of course, has its place in the decision-making process. Choosing what flavor ice cream to have for desert, for example, cannot be done by logic, and is the appropriate venue to express one's emotion.
Taking one's frustrations out on the wrong object or person, blaming others for one's own or a third party's transgressions is morally wrong as well as stupid.
Neener.
