The problem is the hardware detection of the OS, the mobo, AND the communication it has with the hardware. Between all three the computer has no clue I have a NIC installed. It isn't just the OS's fault.
So I, being the intelligent person I am, use linear troubleshooting and try to isolate the issue. I stick the Linksys NIC in my Dell desktop, running WinXP (which finds, configures and utilizes it immediately) and stick my 3COM NIC in the Linux box, which also finds and utilizes it properly.
I probably won't use Linksys NICs with Linux in the future, most likely I'll only buy 3COM for any OS, but I won't stop using Linux.

Making significant upgrades like this is WORK, it's not fun.
That's an opinion I don't agree with.
I find that upgrading an OS, spending days searching for the latest drivers, and tracking down and squishing all issues that rear their ugly heads quite entertaining.
But I'm sick that way.

Too late. I unistalled XP. I got tired of new things popping up constantly, and rather than download a shitload of new drivers, I just got rid of XP.

Good. I knew flaming you would help.
btw, if you want to stop some of the annoying "OOO OOO MICROSOFT HAS THIS NEW SERVICE AND ITS SOOO COOL SIGN UP NOW NOW NOW NOW NWONWONWONWNOW WEHEHEHEHWEEEEE!!!" stuff, uninstall MSN Messenger. Do a google search and you can find instructions on how to.

Uninstalling MSN Messenger
Go edit C:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf in notepad or wordpad. Find the [Components] section.
Find the line that says: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
and change it to: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
You will have to reboot for this to take effect, but now you will be able to uninstall it from the add/remove programs menu.
And I have to go with Kanid, upgrading OSes is fun, but WinXP doesn't leave much room for things to do though. Mostly GeForce tweaking.
The only other thing that seems to not work is my virus scanner. Oh, and the special functions on my keyboard.
Tell me, does it recognize the drive, but not its burning capabilities? Or does it not recognize the drive period?

Virus scanner:
Nortons at least had an update on thier web site. Not sure what you use.
My keyboard worked by default with XP as well. (both the logitech and the MS one)
Also what Brand is your drive. I know one or two needed ROM updates.
My virus scanner is Trend PC-Cillin 2000.
My keyboard is the multimedia keyboard...uhh...here
As far as driver testing and WindowsXP goes, you need to follow a specific set of guildlines in order to get a "Windows compatible" sticker, and even more hoops to get WHQL certified. It is by no means Microsoft's job to provide drivers for every bit of hardware you have in your machine. That's a job that belongs to the hardware manufacturer. For the same reason that when you call Microsoft with a problem with your Creative Labs soundcard, they'll say, call Creative Labs.
However, that being said, Microsoft will write default drivers for stuff like VGA, basic sound, modems, etc. They will also work with OEMs to include their drivers with the OS. Once again, if those drivers don't work with your hardware, then that hardware vendor didn't follow the default specs for the generic API calls that Microsoft lays out very plainly in MSDN.
By the way, most of your OEMs have support contracts with Microsoft developing software for use on upcoming OS's. However, not every company has the same deadline as Microsoft. When Windows 2000 came out, my Creative Labs sound card was on "beta" drivers for over eight months, with no further development in sight.

Nero works fine. That's all that matters.

I updated Windows and reinstalled Nero and now that mess is cleared.
And I was just going to suggest reinstalling Nero.
Upgrading your OS as opposed to a Clean Install, can sometimes make things a little screwy. Reinstalling all your old software usually helps, and ALWAYS reinstall all your hardware drivers.

I was trying to give him that feeling that it isn't just "plug in and go" when it comes to upgrading your OS. It almost always takes some tweaking and playing around to get things right. If you're not up to the task, don't do it. Don't whine about it either, just accept the fact that j00 r n0+ l33t.
