You can't roll for anything that gives you extra information, such as what your reward from a combat will be before winning that combat.
Some people, like Humans, Halflings, Assassins, and Thieves can roll in advance.
Bajah, can the Death Knight ability have to be used like a single-use item, after identifying the monster and your attack, or only before the roll?

Inferno-Spirit visits the Church of Ja'Gorgo and merely leaves it to a visit as he does not have enough coin for a donation.
Xyrra hits a reduction trap, but doesn't have any levels she can lose! Lucky this time, Xyrra!
Tarquinn has his eye on the prize and defeats the angry kobold, thieving 15 gold coins in the process! He gains 1 level and 10 gold coins from the victory, as well as looting a +1 shield!
Naimah hits the Church of Blackenoth, but is turned away because he has no coins to appease the Dread God.
Norim squares off against a barghest and loses the battle! He is unable to lose any levels this time, so he gets a slightly lucky break, but he's not happy about the loss.
ATTENTION: As all three Churches were hit on the first day, the Gods will offer their services at the Churches (not the shrines) for half price on Day 2!
