The second one has its merits (the side quests and quests in general are more fun) but I have to say I enjoyed the first one more.

Mordin is so cool =3

So! For those of you who have finished the game, how did you fare in the suicide mission?

I got everyone through alive I was thorough with upgrades, had everyone's loyalty but Zaeed, and spent a lot of time considering which characters were best suited to each assignment. If you're curious:

Legion infiltrated through the vent and Jacob was my second team leader. Samara escorted the crew, Jack provided my biotic shield, and Garrus was my diversion team leader. I had Grunt and Tali with me in each segment.

I know that Normandy upgrades, your assignments, and maybe the player's performance affects the outcome. I'm still trying to figure out when and where loyalty becomes a factor.

I'm pretty sure that nonloyal party members die at the last push at the gate when you go kill the baby reaper.

I didn't, and he survived for me. I didn't pick up anything character specific for anyone, and everyone survived. Everyone was loyal, and I had all the ship upgrades (which are required if you want Jack, Garrus and Thane to make it). Tali through the vent, Miranda as second team leader, Jacob for taking my crew back, and Samara for the swarm tunnels.

While I was fighting the end boss I guess. I don't know, it didn't really say. And yes I had everything researched for him. All I saw was a quick shot of him on the ground after having beaten the boss and then a coffin in the last scene. No feedback on what happened :/

Sado-masochistic RPGs? Play this shit on insanity and then come back and post about it.

I beat the game on Friday, doing every side mission and reading every codex entry and listening to every line of dialogue etc etc. There were a few missions that were bugged such as Ish's deliveries and the asari on the Citadel that needed the fake IDs. Also I chose the wrong squad leader for the alternate squad so Legion fucken died, even though that shouldn't make sense since Mordin was in the STG ("similar to SPECTREs" according to the codex) and I chose him. The final boss was hilarious and also incredibly gay but whatever. Overall I think the game is better than the first one, which took me considerable patience and thought to decide. The side planets on the first one were utterly pathetic, and even though the side planets on this one are basically boxed B-shooter canyons with impossible rows of cover, it's still better. The combat is better although the ammo is a pointless concession and the action is still more stiff and less complex than things like Queers of Bore.

I beat the game on normal, got to level 30 during the final fight, and am working through it on insanity now (barely). It is a punch in the nuts. Also, to get your team to survive the final mission:

Do all the loyalty missions, get the armor, shield, and gun upgrades for the SR2, choose Miranda, Jacob, or Garrus for the alternate team, choose Tali or Legion to open the gate, choose Grunt to take the crew back to the Normandy, and choose Jack or Samara to create the biotic field. I did all of these except I picked Mordin for the alternate team leader which got Legion killed

P.S. wtf is the point of having elemental rock paper scissors when you have a cool down just to CHANGE YOUR AMMO TYPES, you can't tell your teammates where to aim, and their damage sucks ass anyway? Unless you use warp ammo the game is basically inviting you to change to one ammo type, whittle down the barrier, change ammo type, whittle down the shields or armor, wait, change ammo type, whittle down the health. It's like fighting a geth colossus every time you just want to fucking kill someone. By the end of the game I could one-shot the collectors and husks and everything, but Jesus Christ. On insanity all the enemies have more health than you do. Varren have armor. VARREN

Furthermore I can't even retrain my powers until after Horizon, so basically I'm stuck getting my ass kicked for several hours until I become marginally better by adopting the popular strategy of commando + heavy inferno ammo + heavy disruptor ammo + heavy reave + heightened adrenaline rush.

This is why Mordin is the best. Do 4/4 Heavy Incinerate, 2/4 Cryo Blast, 4/4 Salarian Scientist. Pick someone else with Warp or Overload if you don't have either to deal with Barriers or Shields, and you'll literally drag your nuts over everything, even on Insane. Pretty much the only things that retain armor after Incinerate are Heavy Mechs and Geth Primes. Harbinger controlled Collectors and Krogan only end up with a tiny bit left. And Cryo Blast makes unarmored things nice and fragile/crowd controlled. He literally makes Inferno Ammo pointless.

Alternatively, play Three Engineers. You, Tali, and Legion. Attack Drones tend to stunlock all non-boss type enemies(Regular Combat Drones only stun shielded enemies, only thing they attack,) not including the chance of paralyzing Synthetics. You can use three of them. Simultaneously.

Out of curiosity, on the higher difficulty levels, is it a new game+ situation like ME1, and if so, do you pretty much get to skip all the planet farming for upgrades and just burn through the recruit/loyal/core missions?

Or is it start from scratch and shit is hard.

New Game+ you just keep any weapons you've found, heavy weapons you've found/researched, armor pieces you've bought, and Shepard bonus powers unlocked from loyalties. No upgrades transfer over. But you start off with 50,000 of each resource, which means you'll never need to worry about Element Zero. Ever.

You get the most bonuses for having the long service medal and for having imported a character. You either get a bonus for everyone surviving the final mission or for beating the game a second time. I recently started a vanguard (third playthrough) and I started with 350,000 credits and 60,000 of every resource.

My Insanity completed Soldier build was Hardened Adrenaline Rush, Improved Cryo Ammo, Shock Trooper, and the Geth Shield evolution that added 10% more weapon damage. Final mission was just.. easy. Heavy Reave on Samara took care of Collector and Harbinger Barriers and, of course, Garrus was just plowing through things with Heavy AP ammo. Improved Cryo Ammo pretty much freezes things in one shot, making enemy health bars virtually pointless. Didn't even use a heavy weapon.

In fact, last time I used one was the Cain back on the disabled collector ship, when the Praetorian shows up. And that was more to just quickly get rid of the Husks and Collectors that like to annoy the fuck out of you than to fight the Praetorian.

Yeh, I'm considering respeccing to cryo ammo since I never use inferno ammo anyway. My AT is warp ammo since I don't have any big problems with dying, although maybe I'll switch it to the geth shield boost and then change from hardened AR to heightened AR for the extra 50% damage which would make up for the loss of warp ammo anyway. Plus my armor is already blue and purple, so taking cryo ammo clearly follows D:

Don't underestimate the disruptor ammo though, since even with my awful damage I can take down "troopers" of all types (gangs, collectors, mechs, geth, etc.) in but one hit of the widow with it. It would probably work with only third level though, who knows.

I've done all the side missions on Illium now and I'm moving on to the Thane recruitment.

Heavy Disrupter Ammo
Assassin Cloak
Assassin
Heavy Inferno
Heavy Shield Transfer
Comedy point in AI Hacking

Pop on the assassin cloak + disrupter ammo and shit just gets taken down a peg. Plus I have all the bases covered on taking down defenses. Compared to trying a level 1 Sentinel on Hardcore, Insanity with my Infiltrator is pretty easy.

Although at level 30 I'm that I don't have any more points to spend on NPC powers.

That was my infiltrator build, almost exactly, except I used warp ammo instead of energy drain. I've just concentrated my insanity soldier purely on damage and so far it actually seems to be working. I can take down almost all enemies in one hit, and am not really taking significant damage. I'm rather lacking in crowd control though.

What the hell is up with there being like 5 total unique weapons per character?

Cull out sidegrades and handguns you'll never use and you're down to like one or two upgrades that you'll care about. You can pretty much totally ignore weapons entirely right up until the collector ship if you want to, and you won't suffer much.

In place of a variety of weapons, you instead get a sterile percent bonus upgrade from planet scanning. Is this really supposed to be more fun? Were we scratching our heads while playing ME1 and thinking "OH CHRIST there are SO many weapon and armor selections to make! I wish I had fewer options!"

Apart from that A++++ would play again (and am).

I cheated on my ME1 romance with Tali because Quarians have a gap and are hot.

The inventory was pretty shittily implemented in the first game, so I still find the second one better, but yes, getting rid of the upgrades and everything was stupid. Although basically all you had to do was get all the achievements, max out pistol, then put a rail extension VII and frictionless materials X and either shredder ammo X or tungsten ammo X in your HMWP X and then spam marksman and fire constantly to win the game. The fact that there was only one proper way to configure your inventory was annoying, where at least in the new game there's some variety. People whine on the forums about the merits of the vindicator compared to the revenant for example, even though the revenant is basically a shotgun and a vindicator is basically a sniper rifle and people don't know shit.

It was annoying that they switched ammo types from inventory-based to power based (especially with shared cooldown) but you must admit that there's more importance in selecting your configuration than there was before.
