Health care in the U.S. operates on the assumption that you have health insurance. Most people do. You do not. If you get prostate cancer tomorrow, guess who will pick up the costs for treating you? Then the hospitals have to pass on the costs in increased prices to everyone.

Except the US government, not the health industry, picks up the tab for legally obliged medical care. It's a part of medicaid.

Either way, though, you're still arguing against collective medicine, not against people who choose not to have insurance.

Anyway, if I had even a remote chance of getting that sick, I would get insurance obviously.

Last I checked, no one counts on getting sick or breaking a bone in their body. Not having some form of medical insurance is pretty stupid, otherwise you'll be looking to take out a loan to pay for your medical bills if something does happen.

Last summer I had a hernia removed (birth defect), and the hospital bill was over $60,000. Health insurance paid almost every cent.

When we got the bill saying how much owed the hospital after insurance, there was a form on the back of the paper for financial help so we could pay it off over time.

My insurance costs $5 a month. I've got one of those high deductible health saving plans. I also put $50 a month into the HSA, but, see, I get to keep that money if I don't get sick, for ever and ever. And it earns 2.5% interest over time. I've got $3,000 in it now. If I do get sick (or need emergency surgery) or whatever, the most I could be out for in a year is $2,000 of the money I've got squirreled away. After that, the insurance kicks in and covers me up to $5,000,000.

Maybe you should look into a plan like that, Bill.

But then again, you've had to declare bankruptcy so making smart decisions with your money obviously isn't your strong suit.

Well look at that, Blindy actually said something worth reading for once! I'll ask him if you need to get this through your employer for it to be that cheap or-

Bump for the big McCain win in Florida. He is now the definite frontrunner going into Super Tuesday.

Also I missed this shit. McCain did not have a "big win" in florida, he beat Romney by 5 points which is nothing major at all. He got all of florida's delegates though because florida has fucked up winner-take-all primary voting.

By big win, I meant, it was very important for McCain to show he could win in a closed Republican primary. Something he couldn't do in 2000.

edit: and now he looks like the frontrunner to a lot of people, which is important going into super Tuesday. So it was a big win for his campaign.

I'm on the same plan, though it costs me a little more... and I did have to get it through my employer. They cover 80% of the total cost, so the total premium is something like 80 a month, but if you're getting it on your own it's probably significantly more.

So the concerns of regions with low population density can have equal representation before the executive branch. Same reason every state gets 2 senators regardless of population.

"True democracy" is just a pretty name for mob rule.

You don't really need a great job, these plans have been around for 3 years now and they haven't really gained too much popularity yet, but they're pretty much designed for mid level smaller companies.

One of the side effects of a HD/HSA plan is that the money spent on health costs is the employees money- since they get to keep it if they don't spend it. You get these in at your company and annual health care cost per employee drops by about 40% instantly, because people stop going to the doctor for every freaking sore throat they get and only go when they really have to. As such, the cost of a HD/HSA plan only goes up at an average of 4% per year, while most HMO's go up around 12% per year.

I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't see them in every company within the next 5 years or so.

You should try having a really great job, it's easy and lets you buy cool stuff

I looked into it and the plan that I'm on isn't available through my provider if you're buying as an individual... the closest comparable thing has a $2000 annual deductible, after which point you pay 20% of just about everything. That was something like $120 a month were I to apply for it.

Everyone's jumping on Maradon for not having health insurance, but I know if my employer didn't offer it I probably wouldn't either... I hardly ever use mine, and I'm a tightwad when it comes to pretty much everything except my toys.

EDIT: Although really you don't need a "really great job"... I work for a small engineering firm (~20 people) and the reason they chose to offer this plan is because it's one of the cheaper plans available

Apparently, more than 20% of the votes going toward McCain have been from outside the republican party, meaning same-day party switches and non-republicans voting in states that allow cross-party primary voting. This is supported by the exit polls in states where McCain won - in florida they showed Romney leading by 5% among people who identified themselves as republicans.

65 to 70% of people who identify themselves as republicans have said they would never vote for McCain.

I'm getting all this off the radio so I can't source any of it, but it doesn't seem at all far fetched. Anyone who pays even cursory attention to politics knows that McCain is only a hair less liberal than Hillary.

Some good news is that McCain's campaign is basically broke. Even with federal campaign fund matching he basically has nothing going into super tuesday.

If McCain becomes the Republican nominee, I'm betting they look seriously at Lieberman as VP.

He can get the press and possible extra Democratic voters switching over, for being the first "bi-partisan" team running for president/VP, even though, they are really very, very similar in their views and votes.

Is it really that hard to believe that I'd see Hillary as the lesser of two evils? Sure, she's a hardline socialist. She publicly describes herself as a member of the early progressive movement, a movement that idealized Mussolini and other european authoritarians and command economies.

John McCain is worse. The only difference between McCain and Hillary is bust size, but Hillary will at least attempt to appease public sentiment. McCain absolutely refuses to compromise his asinine ideology for anything, including the will of the people. That would be an admirable trait if he wasn't absolutely wrong about everything.
