So it'd better deliver, Gains. Else you're dead. You're fucking dead.
Hud's my favorite.
it was really a good movie imo, albeit kinda plotless (completely)

I want to see it, badly. I can't wait till my aunt sends me the free movie passes that she forgot to give my BF for xmas.
She forgot to give me free passes?
1. IMHO, filming it with a handicam worked very well for telling a story from a 1st person point.
2. Hud, for a guy that get lets than 1 min of face time, was still a great character, And the only memorable lines.(Flaming Hobo comes to mind)
3. Anyone that is upset/surprised at the end wasn't paying attention for the opening. Dunno if this really needs tagging, but if you didn't remember the text in the beginning about the footage being recovered in Central Park, and then surprised that they bought it at the end, need to pay attention more.
4. I Went to see this because reading up on the movie It was stated to be an giant monster movie. But it Ain't. Inspiration for this Was supposed to be something like Godzilla, but for Americans. Makes me wonder if Abrams had ever seen Godzilla, or any Giant Monster movie, Because he would know the star of a giant monster movie, is the Giant goddanm Monster. However in Cloverfield the Giant Monster is almost never seen, never explained, And for the most part a Giant MacGuffin.
Outside of this peeve of mine, the movie was OK. And hell with this danmed strike, even an ok movie is a lot better than boring reruns. Peter fucked around with this message on 01-18-2008 at 03:22 PM.

If LOST is any indication, he'll need a fucking movie just to explain this movie. I thought it was okay at best, though I was a tard and kept making parallels between this movie and LOST. By the end I wasn't upset or happy I was more annoyed if anything, it didn't really satisfy my expectations.

I think he had, though I'm guessing that a lot of CG work and a non-human view of the monster would have made it a lot less impactful.
I think the direction he chose (Introduce characters, give 9/11-like shock and awe, slowly reveal more of the creature, near the end have a close-up, etc.) gave it a more real feeling. We've all seen movies from the point of view of the helicopter circling overhead, safe, as the military fires missiles and whatever else at it, but we haven't seen it from the point of view of the average person who was actually IN the city at the time, trying to escape, figure out what the fuck is going on, who's alive, who's dead, how to stay alive, etc.
It was great.
Referring to the monster itself as a McGuffin is similarily flawed. The movie may be a film about a handful of people trying to survive in a New York gone apocalypse, the monster is still a major driving force in the film that directly impacts every moment, from beginning to end, minus the 'original' tape Rob filmed of himself and Beth. It's not nearly as meaningless as other McGuffins; notably the Maltese Falcon or the Briefcase in Pulp Fiction.

Maybe they can bring The Authority back now.

haha because I can't enjoy big explosions and cool effects unless I know what the origin is of the thing that is causing the big explosions, and what its motivation is.

it's just that the story of the movie just wasn't the story of the monster.
which is fine, because who gives a fuck where it came from, honestly. Blindy. fucked around with this message on 01-23-2008 at 03:15 PM.

I wonder how they will do the sequel. Probably the same story from a different PoV.
