I'll copy paste an existing customer review that pretty much matches my own thoughts first.

quote:
This game is great. It's a worthy successor to BG, the Fallouts and Planescape Torment.

First off, the engine is rocksolid. And GORGEOUS. I seriously think this is one of the better looking games out there. That and the artdirection make for one gaphical sweet piece of software. The character models....mmmmmm! And the animation is just topnotch. Insanely well done, really...Tekken good, if you know what I mean (which you might if you've played the game).

Then there's the voice acting: it's not just decent, it's good! It actually helps immerse you in the game

As for the combat...I'm really digiing it. The timing needed bring a little immersion in there, and there is actually a need to move tactically, helped by the dodging moves. Coupled with the magic, it kinda feels like being a combat jedi...especially with the different gorgeous animations and the different styles. Combat feels varied and FUN.

Now, theoretically, it is a clickfest...in the exact same way HL2 is a repetition of clicking on the LMB.

But what really sets this game appart is the story, and the way it's all presented. Some great action seequences, which really put you in the world. And it's actually a ROLE playing game, with actual choices to be made. Choices which aren't black/white, with repercutions. Plus, totally unlike Oblivion, there's actual memorable characters here. Fleshed out ones

Two minor niggles: loadtimes when entering single room houses suck (even though it's just 5 secs) and yeah, lining up to climb stairs could be a bit more lenient. But that's IT.

Oh, and two realy nice things are that the three different camera modes are mapped to F1/2/3. I use F3 and sometimes F2, but it's nice that there's no menus involved. And the UI looks great. It's a bit different, but it fits the game well.

But the total package; an interesting story, cool characters, action, sweet combat, great graphics and artdirection, actual choices in an interesting world. It's nice to finally play a real RPG again after so long.

All in all, this game ROXORZ MY RPG SOXORZ. It's a real rpg, halleluyah!

Ok now for my additions. The game is gorgeously presented and seems to be flawlessly coded (as long as you download and install the pre-release patch too, which is the only major whoops on the developers part) and I've suffered no crashes or glitches at all yet.

The story is mature and intelligent. Yes, there is sex later on, a hell of a lot of it if you want to fuck everything in sight, you can even go hump the vampires you hunt. Haha. The main character seems to be a Conan-like individual, only with more intelligence and uses magic. There are no real black-and-white evil or good choices, only choices which each lead to different consequences in the story. So you have massive replayability value right there.

The voice acting.. this is the biggie since it's an Eastern European game and we all know what the voice acting on those are like. Well I have to say I was pleasantly suprised to find the voice acting to be pretty good. You can still tell that the script had to be translated into English for the English voice actors, but the story is solid and so far I have met no one who has a stupid accent. The main character seems to be a man of little words.. he just kicks ass, takes his payment, and moves on.

If you love RPG's I would heartily recommend this game. If you can overlook its (incredibly minor) flaws then you'll have lots of fun. It's a TRUE RPG game, something that has been lacking for a good long time. It's also open-ended.

In a pinch I'd have to say it's a cross between Oblivion and Diablo. Combat is click-based and looks simple at first but is incredibly hard to fully master.

Oh, and it supposedly has around 20 hours play time on the main quest.

Like FF7-sized.

It uses the BioWare Aurora engine (updated for 2007) so if you could run Neverwinter Nights 2 then you can certainly run this game too.

Although I have everything set at max and it's smooth in-game, even my monster of a machine slows down when they do the sweeping panoramic views of things (like the entire fucking fortress you begin in ).

Aargh, Mort, aargh. You hated and returned C&C3 and STALKER, which are great games in my opinion, for absolutely minor reasons. Now you love a game that is (according to all reviews I have read so far) chock-full of minor reasons. Does that mean I will hate that game now? What the fuck, Mort?

C&C3 had a horrible, laughable, story.

STALKER was just plain horrible.

I also picked up Jericho, which so far has proven to be a pretty fun horror shoot 'em up. The only bad points I can find is that it's mindless (the story points are so easy to guess that it's not even funny) and very easy. Not bad though if you just want to blow some brains out for an hour or two.

I didn't ask for a justification of your opinion. That wasn't the point of my post, as it is boring to argue opinions. (Although I do wonder what kind of story you did expect when you put the C&C3 DVD into your drive. It's freaking C&C!)

I'm glad that you like The Witcher though.

I've been planning on getting either Katamari and The Witcher, or Katamari and Jericho.

Having been a huge, huge fan of Undying, I was kinda leaning toward Jericho. Would that be a mistake?

The new Katamari isn't as good as the prior ones; it feels like a soulless effort that doesn't have any of the charm of the prior games. How they managed to fuck up such a simple formula is beyond me. Jericho is a second tier FPS, and there's been several better FPS that have come out recently and it looks like we may get a couple better before the year's end too. The Witcher is the most solid of the bunch.

Well, I like Katamari and I only have a 360 so I don't really have much choice in the matter.

What the heck makes a game "soulless" anyway?

There's a bunch of 360 and PC games coming out this month, so you may want to look at them before you put down the cash just yet.

And as far as soulless goes, the game feels like a cash-in. The humor is gone (with the King being pretty annoying now), the level design is terrible compared to the first two (no really unique levels and the levels don't really build on each other like they did before), and the game goes from having fun rolling a big ball to a competition to roll the biggest ball possible. The creator of the series didn't work on this game and you can tell pretty easily. Soulless is the best word I have for it. If you haven't played the other games for some reason, you won't really notice this problem though.

The Witcher just keeps getting better and better.

Instead of dumbasses walking around calmly getting soaked like in Oblivion, the villagers run around if it's raining and try to stand under cover until it stops. All the while muttering, "Lousy weather..". The guards stand there and grumble because they're not allowed to leave their posts.

I've killed one unique monster so far, you can only keep one trophy on your hook at any one time but it vanishes once you cash it in so you can go kill another unique. The uniques never respawn and have special names and are considered "bosses" so are quite hard to kill. I wish I'd have FRAPS'ed my victory over the unique ghoul, but that would ruin the fun for everyone else playing the game. The potion that speeds you up simply makes everything so to a crawl like in F.E.A.R., letting you plan in advance and time attacks perfectly so bosses get anihilated. I tried to fight the ghoul boss without this potion or spells and got my ass handed to me, you definately have to use your head, as well as grease your weapon with poisons specifically designed to kill a certain type of enemy.

So I go out to fight these things drunk out of my head, swaying all over the place, in the pitch dark.

Haha, good times.

Ok, I should warn people, the one and only bad point of this game is that it's much like FF7 where you have to mostly figure stuff out yourself and use your brain. I, like many others, have become used to games that hand every single detail to you on a platter and are thrown when a game pops up that doesn't.

It all makes sense in the end though. Act 2 was extremely confusing until the end, when I put it all together and went "ahhhhh, right".

Just completed it.

Oh my god.

Oh my fucking god.

BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED.

The ending. Oh god. Oh god. You raise an eyebrow at a small detail right at the very end of the game (like in the final sequence) and it sends a chill right through you because you suddenly understand it all. The perfect climax to a perfect game. Holy crap.

I'm bursting to tell someone, but it would completely ruin the game for anyone else. So I won't. Just play it, it's fucking awesome.

Oh god.

So far I have been digging this game. I have noticed, that it seems the actions of your decisions don't show themselves right away. The story plays them out pretty smooth to, like letting the squirrels take the shipment in chapter one, and the dealer getting ganked in chapter 2 because of it.

Yeah, they're all delayed consequences that allow you to paint your own story as time goes on. By the end you'll learn that everything is inter-connected and things from even the prologue effect other things right up until the epilogue.

The one and only bad thing about the game is that the last chapter and epilogue are incredibly easy if you complete every other quest in the game, since quests reward far more exp than killing random yard trash. You're stupidly powerful by the end and plow through everything, even the King of the Wild Hunt is easy and he's supposedly Death itself.

Nah, that wasn't a spoiler. You meet the transparent King of the Hunt himself very early in the game, he speaks like he already knows you and this confused a lot of people playing the game, but apparently it's connected to the books somehow. The King of the Hunt symbolises Death as well as Destiny, he follows the witcher constantly because he's interested in him.

You've made this game sound pretty amazing.

Is this typical for combat during the game?

"He lets the last Hungarian go, and he goes running. He waits until his wife and kids are in the ground and he goes after the rest of the mob. He kills their kids, he kills their wives, he kills their parents and their parents' friends. He burns down the houses they grew up in and the stores they work in, he kills people that owe them money. And like that he was gone. Underground. No one has ever seen him again. He becomes a myth, a spook story that criminals tell their kids at night. 'If you rat on your pop, Keyser Soze will get you.' And nobody really ever believes." - Roger 'Verbal' Kint, The Usual Suspects

So I got it and installed it on my admittedly less than stellar laptop and it seems to be a bit befuddling.

My computer lags excessively during cutscenes, often starting way late and with out-of-synch dialogue. So basically, when I arrived at the Outskirts, my character was talking and describing events that hadn't happened yet (seeing dogs, etc. etc.)

Is this the actual story part, a fixable bug or attributable to my computer?
