If Drysart made money off these forums like Lowtax does off of his, then I could see where some of you guys are coming from. I'm not going to approach the whole issue of this somehow reflecting on an inadequate or underdeveloped ethics structure. I think it's a ridiculous assertion. I'm also that guy that answers inconsistently on those bullshit binary choice morality questions so I guess I'm ethically underdeveloped or something :shobon:
And I certainly didn't want Parcelan to lose his status. I had it in mind going into this that everything would be reversible.

Been thinking about this quote over the last hour or so and I'm not always convinced it's always true. I know last week I posted something snippy in response to Mort and he basically said I never contribute anything other than small, snippy comments. This is actually a pretty truthful assessment and although I wouldn't give someone the satisfaction of immediately owning up to it, I did take the comment to heart.
In general, though, everyone could probably afford to treat each other with a little more respect around here. But that's a hard cycle to break after there's been such a long history shit slinging. Not trying to put myself above that, because I'm certainly as guilty of it as anyone else, but I wonder why we continued to put up with it for so long.

No, I'm talking about Kennatsu, who defines non-offensive even more than I do. I can't imagine what he could have done to deserve a blacklisting - I'm guessing it was done by the usurper.

This whole ordeal is the posterchild for the whole "internet is serious business" thing
Keg, the internet is serious business. In a general sense, that is; what we do here is an indulgence. A lot of companies have dependable internet revenue streams, and any company worth its salt is going to have an internet revenue stream or three as part of its business model, and that's the way it's going to go from now on. You have to get out of your head the notion that the internet is somehow separate from the real world. Private enterprise is eroding that boundary every single day. Maybe that was true at one time, but now, as an example, all employment background checks include extensive internet searching. That's not to say that some headhunter is going to stumble across this gem of a thread, but a Facebook would be readily accessable, as would a Myspace account. My point, then, is this: you can't guarantee anymore that everything you say or do on the internet will forever remain innocuous and anonymous.

Gross simplification of the internet. Do I call people fags on my class message boards? Of course not! But just because the internet can be used for business doesn't mean it can't be used for fucking around as well.

Not at all. You goof off with your friends in the real world, but you keep yourself in check when out with coworkers, or when something might get back to coworkers. Same deal with the internet; you just have to be mindful of where and when you say stuff. For example, talking about how you got baked just after your mandatory drug test on your Myspace page could very mean that you won't be getting that job (meaning, of course, a full-time salary job). Whereas before it didn't matter what it did on the internet in your spare time(so long as it wasn't hideously illegal), it now does to some degree.

Were someone to do this to a bigger board that earns money and pays the bills for its owner like SomethingAwful then I could see what you're getting at.
I'm not saying it was the brightest or best idea ever, but it was pretty amusing!
edit: Given the opportunity, I might have hijacked it and posted a thread before giving it back, but in reality I probably would have just be like "haha wouldn't it be funny if.. no, I'd better not." Kegwen fucked around with this message on 03-03-2007 at 01:18 AM.

I do feel sorry for Drysart for having to take time out of his apparently busy life to fix some stupid shit with this old board that he doesn't pay any attention to. That's not enough for me to hold back the laughter and turn it in to righteous rage, though.

Kegwen kinda missed the mark; I was simply pointing out that the internet adheres to some of the same "time and place" mechanisms that real life does. I don't IM my professors the same way I IM my friends, I don't post here like I post on 4chan, etc. The internet isn't entirely separate from real life, you're correct--but it's not like it's a direct extension of your workplace, either, and has its nooks where strange things are acceptable.
I'd also like to point out that the internet can be as anonymous as you want it to be. I haven't done a very good job of hiding my identity on these boards (phone number, picture, etc), and I'm still not worried in the least about anything I do here getting back to people I know (because I'm a fucking hermit, but that's beside the point). In addition to common sense, you can use stuff like tor, proxies, etc to put some distance between real life and the intarwebs.
