I think I read one once when I was deployed, and it was pretty okay. As a rule, though, I avoid shared and game universes like a particularly nasty plague.
In defense of Dragonlance, it was a game universe after it was a book.
It was also not a shared universe until 6 or 7 books in.
Hence the Chronicles trilogy and the Legends trilogy are good.
Others not so much.
