Early on that's a viable strategy. Later on, your pets are so fragile compared to brutes and even stalkers that it's best to just focus fire on something and kill it quickly. BY that time your brutes should have tons of res and you should have tons of debuffs and buffs, the tanks can stay alive without your pets. Once you reach this point, all but your tier 3 pets will die in 1-2 hits from mobs so it doesn't make much sense to sacrifice a third of your DPS to shield them from one or two hits that won't even take a tenth of their HP off.
I beg to differ. Sending your pets in to soak up an alpha (especially when confronted with nasty stuff like CoT Succubi or Fortunata Mistresses) or to take the first few big hits from an AV/Hero is insanely useful, even at high levels.
Even a brute will go down in 1-2 hits from AV/Hero power attacks (i.e. Total Focus, Beheader, Ripper, etc.) unless he's seriously buffed up by a corr or pops a bunch of insps.

Maybe it's just the teams that I've been grouping with, but whenever we have to go up against an AV or even just a really strong boss, typically the brutes are buffed past half the screen (on 1280x1024) 
The only time I've ever really had a use for my pets as distractions or diversions, was using the tier 1's to run across the huge Leviathan cavern to pull a group after a botched Eye run (And we only did that so we could get larger pulls than TP Foe, and thus clear the cavern quicker).
I don't think I've ever been in a group fighting an AV without at least one, typically two corruptors present. And with my particular powerset (Force Fields), I almost count as a third when it comes to buffs.
