I still think Bush is the lesser of two evils, but when he starts to fuck with our national soverignty it makes me wonder. Maradon! fucked around with this message on 07-19-2006 at 03:07 PM.
It's looking more and more like I'm going to have to move to Britain just to get done what I want to do.

Start an underground biologists society. Develop some amazing treatment entirely in secret. Make it obvious that it works, then reveal it to the world, then let them arrest you for it.
Let "Creators of miracle cure arrested under new law!" be plastered all over the newspapers and just see how long you stay in jail.
John Opitz, a professor of pediatrics, human genetics, and obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Utah, testified before the President's Council on Bioethics that between 60 and 80 percent of all naturally conceived embryos are simply flushed out in women's normal menstrual flows unnoticed. This is not miscarriage we're talking about. The women and their husbands or partners never even know that conception has taken place; the embryos disappear from their wombs in their menstrual flows.
If Bush believes that life begins at conception, why isn't he trying to stop this or save those poor kids lives? Or does he only become outraged when we try to do something productive with them?

I've heard about the recent proposed economic deals between the US, Canada and Mexico along with an awful lot of paranoid bullshit surrounding it but this is the first time I've heard someone claim it will result in a Euro-style currency adopted by the three nations.

Did you know that several other countries already use the US dollar, notably El Salvador? And OBTW, NAFTA has been a good thing economically for us, and the EU is stronger economically as a whole since implementing its currency and trade policies.
That's not to say I'm in favor of relinquishing one jot of our sovereignty. . .but you really should make an effort to know what you're talking about if you want to discuss economics and trade policy. It's not as simple as either the Utopians or isolationists would have you believe.

I've got nothing against free trade at all! Indeed I'm all for the free trade aspects!
What I'm not all for is an overarching multinational "regulation agency", also known as a "government" to people who aren't trying to sell you something.

I already knew all three of these things and made my previous statement with them in mind. 1) If places want to use the US dollar, I see no reason to stop them. 2) I'm in favor of free trade and have nothing against free trade agreements, and 3) the ONLY successes of the EU were in opening trade, in nearly every other aspect it's been a failure. Coincidentally it's these aspects that I oppose.

So when is going from a trade surplus to a trade deficit with Mexico a "good thing" economically?

In a global market, exactly what does it matter? It's that kind of Industrial Age thinking that prevents actual economic progress.

How can a man who advocates the war on terrorism, the Israeli bombings, and the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afganistan turn around and claim the sanctity of life bullshit on a mass of cells with no sentience?
Sounds hypocritical to me.

Stop trying to apply logic, it will just drive you mad. Bush does what bush wants to do because bush wants to do it, and that's the only reason.

I don't even agree with this particular decision, and can see that you're both screwed up because there is, in fact, logic in the stance. There's quite a bit of difference between killing maniacs bent upon your nation's destruction, and killing innocents.
It's frankly sort of stupid to say, "How can anyone who advocates killing terrorists not advocate the killing of innocents?"

Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, it's just the opposite. - John Kenneth Galbraith
quote:
Channeling the spirit of Sherlock Holmes, Mod absently fondled Watson and proclaimed:
I think the claim of hypocrisy still stands. A government which goes to war except to stop a greater loss of life than the war would cause, cannot claim to believe in the absolute sanctity of innocent life given the fact that war always carries innocent death with it. Accepting innocent death in pursuit of a greater good of some sort is exactly what stem cell research is to people who believe that a fetus is life as worthy of protection as a sentient human.
Uh, that's the oldest fallacious "moral dilemma" in history. I thought you were educated enough to realize it, but perhaps once more your Utopian Protection System has triggered the kill-switch to your brain?
There is no moral equivalence between undertaking a morally defensible action that may lead to bad consequences and undertaking a morally indefensible action that may lead to good consequences.
I'm actually for stem cell research, but it's stupid to castigate someone who's willing to kill terroists and liberate nations (whether or not you disagree with the characterization isn't relevant to the discussion) because he's also not willing to kill babies deliberately.
~~~~
And Karnaj, your example isn't hypocrisy, either. The same reasoning would lead one to say that since people die of natuarl causes every day, that putting murder on the books as a crime is hypocritical and only logical after we've eliminated death from other causes.
--Satan, quoted by John Milton
Anyway, I imagine that this would give Demmycrats all sorts of ammo if they used it the most ruthless manner. Just whip up an ad with some sad music, show someone with Parkinson's, and accuse Bush of condemning him to a slow and painful death. Throw in vague accusations of culpability on your opponent's part, and it's even more ruthless than the NJ governer's race last year.
Sad thing is, it had great support by both parties in the Senate, but it will never go anywhere in the House because its full of less experienced, more out-of-touch people.
I've never heard Representatives described as "more out-of-touch" than Senators before.
quote:
Vorbis's account was hax0red to write:
Its a stretch, but overall Senators generally have to be more in touch with larger demogaphics than Reps, who can come from a small, homogenous group with much more hard-line liberal or conservative biases.
Its just that stem cells are not actually human life yet. (Read pinion) because they are not a human yet.
Also, the point that was brought up about the embryos that are flushed out of women almost monthly. Would those be thought of as a product of conception?
This matter is never going to be resolved. Since one cannot pinpoint the actual beginning of human life, then one cannot tell when that life is being taken.
I am pro-choice, pro stem cell research, etc, etc. What makes me sad is that the stem cell thing looks promising, to the point of being the next wonder treatment for a myriad of diseases, and its being stopped in its tracks simply because of an inability to identify the beginning of life.
A sleep deprived Demos stammered:
Representatives are more in touch with the people they represent. They have to be due to their short election cycle.
He's taking stem cells, putting his own DNA into them, and then storing them. Because he thinks of them as human, he figures that each and every one of them will be reborn as George W. Bush on Judgement Day.
At which point, an unstoppable army of George W. Bush clones will shake the heavens with their step, dethrone God, and remake the universe in his own image. (At which point, all angels will fly by flapping their ears.)
It's not something people hear about.
This is just delaying the inevitable, hindering progress.
