And this is still pre-hurricane season. Can't wait to see what will happen if we have a season like last year. Cut supply in the US by even 5%, and prices go through the roof.
There are times, I must admit, when I'm glad for the availability and relative low cost of mass transit.

All this is sorely tempting me to go buy a VW Diesel or similarly fuel-efficient vehicle before demand for them skyrockets. My only saving grace is that I don't drive my truck at all, but my fianswa could use it to commute cheaply. There are times, I must admit, when I'm glad for the availability and relative low cost of mass transit.
Diesel fuel is actually more expensive than regular is near my house, it sucks. All of those people who paid extra for a diesel engine in their truck are none to happy.
It sucks having to commute 55 miles a day for school. At least my truck has been getting me 27 miles per gallon. Glad I'm not taking summer classes now, and that almost any job I'll get during the summer will be 10 miles max away.

my father bought a diesel rig 2 weeks before the national diesel subsidy expired. Was actually kinda funny to me. I wish I had a GM Flex-fuel vehicle right now, not that you can find e80 anywhere. The average price for e80 is like 2.30/gal. I'll take 50 cents less/gallon any day =)

Not really man, even though it is more per gallon, your miliage is still much better than gas. my old man's 250 gets between 23-27 mpg compared to my gas 150's 12-16. For a car, 40mpg would be normal.

"Not really man" what? I said Diesel is more expensive in my area and it pisses the people off who just bought diesel trucks...what part of that are you disagreeing with?
Check any site that talks about diesel engines in trucks, the MPG gain is minor at best, and combined with the fact that Diesel costs more, they are a bad buy if you want it in truck format. It's a bad idea in a truck, and it's barely a good idea in a car.

However, to make the economics of it work for you, you must drive the vehicle a long, long time. If you purchase a diesel vehicle and pay the extra premium for the diesel engine, and then trade the thing in after 100,000 miles or so, it is almost a certain thing you will have wasted a big pile of money. That extra $2000 (or nearly $5000 in the case of the Duramax) will buy a lot of gasoline.

Well, $2000 used to buy you a lot of gas. Now, using my Jersey price of regular, $2.80, as a baseline, $2000 will buy you 714 gallons of gas. At 30 MPG, you'll go 22,000 miles, give or take. So, you have to drive your diesel Beetle 22,000 more miles or, assuming normal usage, about 1.5 years longer, to break even. Given the longevity of diesel motors, this is entirely within reason. Hell, if you drive even more, you'll break even that much sooner.
Of course, this all begs the question: who the hell buys a Beetle TDI in the first place?

Indeed, I was mostly talking about the trucks anyways, those are the ones where you pay a lot for the engine alone.
Though the Prius drivers cracked me up last year; when people were paying upwards of $10,000 over MSRP for them. I saw several articles that said you had to drive those things well over 8 years in order to even break even on the gas.
I miss the 0.60$ per litre....

$10k over MSRP for a prius is kinda insane. However, if you can get MSRP for one it is a great deal. The term economy car really is a misnomer in those. People see economy and think they are getting a Geo Metro or some such, but priuses are actually surprisingly spacious and they have tons of gee wiz type of gizmos in them like keyless ignition. The fact that you get 55mpg out of a Prius is a selling point, but the car as a whole is a very good deal if you are looking for something that will do a very good job of going from point a to point b.
