Has anyone been watching what's developing with Dungeons & Dragons Online the ORPG?

I know I'm excitedly awaiting it's arrival (Q1 of 2006, supposedly March), at least to assess how well it captures the pen and paper, tabletop spirit. Haven't yet found any DnD groups here in Corpus Christi since I moved, so it's wonderful getting back to my roleplay roots, one way or another.

Eberron is the campaign setting, and despite the drawbacks of their racial negatives, I'll probably be playing a Warforged Paladin upon release. Who's with me?

If there is some kind of unofficial DDO thread that's buried, link me to that.

Edit Note: Forgot to include a link for convenience.

Well, I know some people from the forums are either complaining about over-use of instancing the world outside the main city of Stormreach, or the heavy focus on group cooperation since the game isn't very soloer-friendly. Aside from that, looks solid for what it is.

Sorry to hear that Nae. I know how you feel though. My comp that I was running WoW on just gave out on me the Saturday before Thanksgiving. First time I've ever had a processor smoke. It's been tough having only this pentium 1 (yes, you heard right) to chat/post. Gonna have a buddy of mine build a 3800+ athlon dual-core for about $800-ish.

We need a fundraiser for your comp so you can play that rogue with me.

I post on the DDO forums semi-regularly. I was there from the first day the website and forums went up. I was there the first day they posted the news item on Turbine's page that it was being developed.

Now I need to hunt down a winning code in a PCGamer that will let me in Beta.

If you are expecting a revolutionary MMORPG experience, you won't find it in DDO. If you are expecting a faithful translation of D&D tabletop to an MMO, you won't find it in DDO. If you are looking for an online game where you can play with a group of friends, you may find something to like with DDO.

DDO almost exclusively forces grouping. If you like soloing, DDO is not for you.

I'm confuzzled. Isn't a x850 card supposed to be ATI's equivalent to the 6800? I was gonna get a 6600 to save a little cash, but now I'm concerned as to what I need for DDO.

I expect them to not whore themselves to cater to fans. They seem to have strong convictions, and a desire to avoid devolving into what most MMO's become.

I expect as close a translation as can be made from two completely different mediums, while making it actually fun to play. They made it RT istead of turn-based. I can live with that.

I expected it to be group-based, as I never had solo-sessions of D&D.

I knew what to expect, but you seem unhappy with the result. If you'd like to discuss it further, send a PM.

As Nem pointed out, being immune to poison, paralysis, and enegry drain is really, really nice. 25% resistance to crits and sneak attacks is pretty good too. Finally, being able to get the equivalent of Full Plate, plus DR 2/adamantine, at first level with a single feat (Adamantiue Body) is a great deal if you're playing a fighter-type.

As for the healing deficiency, this is a bit of a problem, but the repair damage series that wrigghawk mentions will most likely be available to sorcerers and wizards in our game.

Overall, they're pretty solid, but not particularly better than the other core races. Since there's no level adjustment on them, this is as it should be."

I don't have nearly the time I did in the past to play MMOs, so can't really play a lot to get an accurate review. Plus, I'm already pretty biased against the game and wouldn't even look at it twice if Turbine wasn't the developer (after Mythic Turbine is the MMO developer that I trust most, though they're fucking up a lot lately). Kat's far more deserving than I, especially since she's been following it better.

I can sum it up pretty well with a quickish review I read. Seems to flow with whatever I've heard (ignore the bad spelling though);

Graphically, its about par to old DAoC. Which IMO isn't bad I don't need to see the armhair on an elf to make a game immersive.

No pvp, but as stated before how could there possibly be?

downsides; its an endless series of boxed missions ala CoH, in fact its very much like CoH IMO, Warforged are abominations against the fantasy setting, again IMO, and this is the game that coined "munchkining", "Min-maxing", "monty hauling," and "rules lawyering" of course rules lawyering will be replaced by statistic accountants upon obsolencenece.

upsides: this is exactly what EQ1 should've been, easy to get into, not hard to grasp, I see dndol as a gateway drug to online gaming. DAoC will probably see a subscription increase as people play through this. This will also have a big market in RL d&d groups that just can't get together that are getting older and can't break out the dice due to workaday.

Hehe, while I can agree with the sentiment, a few things did change for better or for worse: Spell slots have been replaced with a sort of spell point system to make casting more do-able since having to sleep for 8 hours after each difficult battle is a drag; Ranged healing was implemented instead of touch since touch-healing proved problematic; Real-time action replaced "rounds of combat", etc. I can deal with these changes since it's all an effort to make things work.

Graphically, its about par to old DAoC. Which IMO isn't bad I don't need to see the armhair on an elf to make a game immersive.

I'll admit, I enjoy PvP in most MMOs. Balancing it for D&D would destroy classes. Cooperation of players was always the goal anyway.

downsides; its an endless series of boxed missions ala CoH, in fact its very much like CoH IMO, Warforged are abominations against the fantasy setting, again IMO, and this is the game that coined "munchkining", "Min-maxing", "monty hauling," and "rules lawyering" of course rules lawyering will be replaced by statistic accountants upon obsolencenece.

Warforged have caused a lot of controversy, but I can't understand why. They aren't robots, or cyborgs, or anything futuristic. Golems infused with magic, gaining sentiency is far fetched, but it's fantasy. Plant, stone, and metal constructs/golems were found in 2nd edition campaigns. Lots of bad publicity based on gut reactions I guess. Considering only one stat that gets +2 and two that get a -2 and the hardships of construct life, it's hardly Gary Gygax enough to be "munchkin".

upsides: this is exactly what EQ1 should've been, easy to get into, not hard to grasp, I see dndol as a gateway drug to online gaming. Eh, finding info isn't that hard. If you have a friend in the beta, there's no reason for them to hold the info from you. Hell, unless your forum is big (IGN) read by developers (F13, Corpnews, FOH) one shouldn't worry about posting info either.

Hell, Auto Assault ending up shutting down their beta and revamping the game because beta players were leaving in droves and more and more info was getting out, even with the NDA.

Could you please elaborate?

What about the folks who want to RP the freed war slave? The racial trait negatives hurt a variety of class combos, including Sorc, Cleric, Paladin, etc. Min/Maxing certain races with certain classes/prestige classes just to be uber is lame, but what is inherently "munchkin" about Warforged?

When did Xundau say they weren't immune? Or did someone experience sleep effects as a warforged in beta? He cited a few of their racial traits, but obviously not all of them.

list:

[EBS page 23 & 24]

- Immunity to poision, sleep effects, effects that cause the sickened condition, nausea, fatigue, exhaustion, and energy drains.

- A warforged responds slightly differently form other living creature when reduced to 0 hit points. A warforged with 0 hit points is disabled, just like a living creature. He can only take a single move action or standard action in each round, but strenuous activity does not risk further injury.
When his hit points are less than 0 and greater as -10, a warfoged is inert. He is unconscious and helpless, and he cannot perform any actions. However, an inert warforged does not lose additional hit pointsunless more damage is dealt to him, as with a living creature that is stable.

- Light Fortifictaion(Ex): When a critical hit or sneak attackis scored on a war forged, there is a 25% chance that the critical hit or sneak attack is negated and damage is rolled normally.

Traits: A Warforged possesses the following traits.

- Unlike other constructs, a Warforged has a Constitution score.
- Unlike other constructs, a Warforged does not have low-light vision or darkvision.
- Unlike other constructs, a Warforged is not immune to mind-affecting spells or abilities.
- Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, disease, nausea, fatigue, exhaustion, effects that cause the sickened condition, and energy drain.
- A warforged cannot heal damage naturally.
- Unlike other constructs, Wargorged are subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, stunning, ability damage, ability drain, and death effects or necromancy effects.

Because, as of the last time I logged into the DDO beta, Warforged were not immune to sleep and elves were. This is intentional, because last time I checked, Warforged have none of their immunities. At all.

And quoting the ECS to me is useless, since I DM an Eberron game weekly.
