Tarquinn, an AA or an AS is a two year degree. Some students earn these at a community or junior college before heading to university to earn a Bachelor's and the courses generally take the place of the first two years of required courses. Class sizes are typically smaller and the courses are cheaper.

What about people who go straight into a Ph.D program after getting a Bachelor's degree? What do you call them?

Besides "Turbo-nerds."

Or do they earn an MA while studying, and get awarded both at the end?

One generally gets the MA on the way. In most disciplines, the MA is around 30-36 hours, and the Ph.D. adds about a year's worth of course work plus a doctoral thesis on top of that. Two more years if you do it right.

Then, of course, many disciplines require post-doctoral work. . . .

In my case, when I do honours, if I get a first class honours, it's Ph.D. direct, but if I drop the ball and it's a second class or lower, I go MSc then the Ph.D. The latter just takes longer.

If I do the former, there aren't any master's degrees involved, but a first class honours is generally considered roughly equivalent, for progression purposes at least.

A lot of universities offer associate degrees as well, and some programs offer only two year rather than four year.

We don't really have what you would call a junior college around here in Indianapolis, unlesss you count ITT Tech or Indiana Business College, so IUPUI is the only real place to get even an associate's.

I have a truly insane number of classes under my belt. I was heading into getting my degree in Secondary Education (middle/high school) with concentrations in English and History (gyahahaha) but at IUPUI they've got a fantastic returning baccalaureate program. So I switched majors this semester to get a Bachelor's in English (British and American Literature), then I'll get on the fast track program to the Secondary Education degree and have two bachelor's degrees when I hit the teaching profession.

College frosh. Trying to get my gen-eds out of the way. Learning toward a major in Theatre, or maybe Graphic Design. I'm not sure yet. I'm not sure what else I'd be good at.

I am good at college, though! By the end of week 2 I was already sneaking out of the boys' dorms at 2:30 in the morning!

Junior in college, working on two bachelor's degrees - Archaeology of the Middle East and Sociology/Anthropology. I want to eventually earn a Ph.D., probably in Anthropology.

Sophomore in an Information Technology major. After that though, I'll be going to law school (providing a good LSAT score).

Despite this poll, I still feel very undeducated only having a BS degree. I am going for my masters as soon as I can. I'll still feel undereducated, but I'm not sure what advantage a Doctorate will give me in my field.

edit: it's not that I just want to get my masters to continue my education and start up my own company, it's that deep down, it feels like i NEED to do it
