I finally quit when my guild was only a third of the way through an expansion (Gates of Discord I think, the one with the clay theme and the annoying mob names) and even at that point the flag progession / zones were already broken to the point of advancement being impossible.
I quit EQ when they killed my class, basically. Charm was nerfed so soloing was out of the question, enchanters weren't wanted in groups to slow because it was inferior to someone's shammy bot sitting outside, and single pulls of insanely overpowered creatures became the norm.
I don't play much of anything with school and homework. I tool around on my frog ranger in EQ2. I've avoided my favorite class there. My highest is a berserker and my next is a troubadour. I really enjoy the scout classes there.

Then I realized I was being the tag-along shammy bot on raids I had no interest in, seldom won loot in, and couldn't always pronounce the monsters of therein. Sooooo I just finished the drifting out I had started long before. I might occasionally pop into EQ to look around, but there's months between those instances. Why play a shaman who sucks in EQ when I can play my shaman/mystic in EQ2 where I can do what I want rather than be a buff bot?
Lot of shamans bitched in EQ2 that they couldn't do everything they could in the first EQ. Taking away my onslaught of buffs was the best thing that could've happened to me as a shaman. I'm free now.

I don't know about post GoD but I can't say that I remember a period in EQ history between that an Kunark when shamans sucked. They could main-heal most xp spots, had the most powerful and mana efficient damage reduction ability in the game (slow) rivaled only by the strictly inferior enchanter slow, had a stackable HP buff, could solo decently and put out some halfway respectable damage if they were bored. I believe you that the class had problems (dots in general sucked in some periods of EQ, multiple shamans on a raid stacked somewhat badly,...), but compared to most other non-trinity EQ classes you guys didn't have it too bad.
EQ died around Velious, and I was a little bitch that quit during Luclin and came back about 4 times over inbetween there and Oow, then I dropped the game all together. The last time I logged in was with the 21 day trial, I checked it out, looked around, made a new char, then uninstalled it.
EQ is DEAD. All that's left is BitchQ.

Oh I know full well Shamans are in demand even now. I also know shamans were full-on capable of soloing (least they were when I left). If I wanted to play a game by myself, I'd play it on the console. I could do things in terms of slow comparable to what Lyinar could do with her chanter at a lower mana cost. I could drop three or four dots (including the epic weapon dot), debuffs, then buff the party, cannibalizing and regenning (which only got easier with the high end fast "nail you to the ground but who cares?" regeneration spells) the whole time. I had a token pet (or pack of pets) I could send in to amuse myself. I had illusion/bear form. I could levitate (and I used that incessantly to go places I probably wasn't intended to go).
I'm a rare member of the EQ gaming community: I think my class was OVERpowered. I was one of the shamans who, when told they might nerf some aspect of shamanism, was fine with it.
But when it came to the raids, you only really needed one main shaman and then the buff-bot shaman. I could play healer, and those opportunities were grand adventures, but they were few and far between. I was the buff bot and occasionally I'd deploy some extra DPS, but mainly I was the buff/debuff bot. Well shit. It's not like there's a lot of skill in doing that. You could practically have a macro for it.
In EQ2 I have to pay attention to make things work. It thrills me when I earn the kills I make.

Velious era shamans could solo dragons in Western Wastes, Luclin era could solo half the boss mobs in that one zone with Rumblecrush.EQ died around Velious, and I was a little bitch that quit during Luclin and came back about 4 times over inbetween there and Oow, then I dropped the game all together. The whole !!!Dragon soloing!!! argument that people used to bring out to call for shaman nerfs was always somewhat dishonest. Those dragons didn't drop loot that was all that useful to a shaman equipped to solo them and compared to other dragons in Kunark or Velious they were utter wimps. It's not like shamans were out soloing Sontalak for ST keys. It was a neat trick to do and a challenge, not a balance issue.

The bot thing is pretty much in the nature of raiding in EQ. If you're not leading the raid or doing some other oranizational job you're a something-bot. A warrior, even when maintanking pounds taunt and tries to stand in the corner, a cleric counts to six and hits CH, a chanter gives out c and vog, hits tash and once in a blue moon mezzes something, a bard twists three songs and occasinally stands behind the mob and autoattacks, mages CotH and hope the mob is not fire immune, a druid gives out buffs and depending on the fight either heals AE victims or nukes, etc. Every once in a while a fight mixes it up a little and gives the offtanks, spot healers or mezzers something extra to do. What you say is true in general, but it wasn't really specific to the shaman class. Mod fucked around with this message on 09-07-2005 at 06:06 PM.

I didnt say it was a balance thing, I was just noting it for how cool Shamans were with the right peripherals.
I always wanted to play one, but I never had the patience to start another character.
I want to play oldschool EQ again.
i miss my drogmar in eq2 sometimes

I miss my (EQ1) Holy Steed's sheer zone-crossing power. Fastest thing in the game short of a bard with drums.
In EQ2 the zones are five times the size and my Holy Steed there is barely sprint speed.

I think they're making flying carpets a travel option with DoF, and not just for Level 30 guilds.
And yeah, Mystics do. Defilers get that retarded purple Pigpen affect.
Oh, and the mystail rat form I think. But I see more defilers runnng around looking like they smell really bad more than as the rats. Lyinar Ka`Bael fucked around with this message on 09-09-2005 at 11:08 AM.

Yeah mystics get Bear Form (functional) and Eagle (pretty) spells at 20
Defilers get Pigpen (functional) and Demonic Chipmunk (pretty?) spells at 20
Supposedly Mystics get a snake form at some point, but I haven't seen it in use yet.
Who gets the little mushroom man pet?
