If sales was the only factor in determining what is "good" and what isn't, then Madden 2004 would have been the game to get in 2004.
Or was that whole BS fiasco back in '03? Point stands either way.

Guild Wars you have to purchase. ROSE Online is a free download.
Also, Guild Wars is not truly a MMO. It's more like Diablo but with 3D chat rooms where you can organize a party, and enforced grouping (at least with NPCs).

How the crap can you bash ROSE when you play RO? ROSE is like RO advanced.

The difference is probably that I play RO on a private server, whereas when I tried ROS, it was just the big, main one. I.E. In RO in have friends, in ROSE I have rivals.
I'm also not overly fond of the graphics in ROSE. At least RO graphics have some personality. ROSE is 3D, sure, but it's also very bland.

Left Behind is quality literature? Halo is the best FPS ever? Sacrifice is a game that absolutely sucks? You also got your elementary economics wrong, many more factors than quality alone influence sales numbers, don't forget marketing, price, availability, customer base, competition, overall economic conditions, etc. Trying to equate quality to popularity simply based on the fact that people buy things they like while discounting all the other factors that go into a purchase is somewhat naive.
And both of you are forgetting that "good" is a purely subjective assessment, rendering the entire argument pointless since it's simply not possible to discuss without first agreeing upon a command "standard of goodness."
Sure, Henry V is great literature, but few people take the time to wade through it again and again, whereas something like The Black Company, while not world class literature, is entertaining enough that it's garnered a huge following of people who've read it over and over. So. . .which would you recommend to someone looking for something fun to read?
The best thing to do isn't to argue about the relative merits of various games, but to try to match a game to the particular tastes of the person asking. Failing that, the subscription numbers do actually represent the best recommendation strategy, in that any random person is most likely to like the same thing that a majority of others like.

I'd say DAoC if you're looking for PvP and didn't like WoW. Lineage 2 might not be a bad choice either, as I've heard it's pretty PvP centric, but I've never played it.
Other than that...you're pretty much screwed. Someone needs to make Shadowbane again, and make it not suck.

Madden 2004 was probably the most fun I had playing a game that came out that year.
Funny how that works.

Sports games are never allowed to be chosen as game of the year. They're also never allowed to be considered better than an FPS or an RPG since sports games never change.

Haven't we gotten into this conversation before and absolutely trashed every argument you brought forth.
That's right, I remember now, we did.
It's not something people hear about.
All you had to do in Superbowl was pick the Bears and run with Walter Payton. No one could tackle him.

Loved those games.
Personally, I've signed off MMOGs for the time being and have gone back to playing (mostly) RTS games.

Where do you play and would you mind someone else dropping in? Been thinking of rejoining PSide, but it wouldn't be fun without my old friends.
Maplestory.
If you're not? WoW.

Actually that was pretty much my whole point
That without a "standard of goodness" the only meaningfull assessment of quality is popularity.

I play on NC/Markov (although my playtime has dropped off a lot due to work). Come say hi, I'll drive you around in my tank.

I don't play anymore, I've cancelled all my MMOG accounts.
EDIT: I did play NC/Markov when I was playing though, as a lot of people around here did.

EW EW EW OH GOD EW.
I cannot express how bad this game is after like 3 days. Seriously, there's no reason to play 2D Ragnarok online or ROSE Online. There's just not. At least with those games you have ok combat. Maple Story needs to not exist.
(I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE)
P.S. Gikk, no offense if you play it. It's your sanity. Mr. Gainsborough fucked around with this message on 07-28-2005 at 05:52 PM.

I like the combat in RO Lag is funny.
Of course...I mean as an assassin or crusader. I HATE magic-users, but that goes for any game
Turns out, magic wasn't in the game yet.

Neither am I, but I'm technically not bound by the NDA. So I'm not supposed to know that, but there's nothing to keep me from saying that.
Except for a certain member of this board getting angry and killing me when Netdevil goes after her. She wouldn't do that though. I think.

If you mean that they rendered several main things in their game as nonexistant/impossible/useless then you're right, that's pretty stupid and not very fair.
If you mean that he bases his view of the game on the fact that they rendered large portions of their own game obsolete on purpose, and his view being based on such is not fair then we're gonna start laughing at you now.

No, I was saying that holding the same evaluation of the game now that he had when he first tried it and it was incomplete is unfair, because the game has changed since then and should be evaluated as such. He can think badly of the game for not having it complete in the first place, I can't really respond to that since when I started, all the main components were in place, but if he's going to judge RO based on past observations, he should still keep in mind that the game now is not the same thing as the game then -_- Really, must you be so demeaning?
