Yeah, you'd think the PSP would spit out the memory stick

On a related note, I hear that the Xbox gives a peculiar message if you insert a PS2 disc in it.

"It takes an idiot to do cool things, thats why its cool."
"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than to be loved for what I'm not."

Spit out the memory stick? hardly. It's a huge bonus in PSP's favor

"I can play GBA games on my DS!" "So? I can play them on my PSP."

What Khyron forgot to add was that "But It's illegal, I have to have a special computer setup to do so, and they don't play as well since they're emulated"

Special computer setup?

And I just got Robo in Chrono Trigger.

If by 'special computer setup', you mean 'install a program on my computer', then yes, my computer is extra special because i've installed DOZENS, nay, HUNDREDS of programs on my computer.

And let's be realistic here, Delphi. PSP Emulation is in its infancy, but emulators are being updated weekly, some even daily. They're getting better, more advanced, and unlike the DS the option is there.

Who knows. By this time next year, I may be flawlessly playing Shining Force, Final Fantasy 3/6j, and Metroid 2 with the flick of my thumb b

Well, it is nice to know that the platform itself sucks so bad that people have to break it's code so you can play 10+ year old games on it.

I'll be off playing Meteos then while you're still trying to work your decade old ROM into working portably.

My ROMs all work fine, actually. Takes about two minutes each to figure out the optimal settings. Kirby's Dream Course, for some reason, is the only one I can't get to break 60 FPS. It hovers around 45,

But ROMs, MP3s, video, movies, and general file transfer are all just secondary to, you know, the main function of the unit; playing PSP games, which it does wonderfully. I've got over 60 hours logged into Metal Gear Acid already.

How is Metal Gear Acid anyways? All the review sites gave it a pretty low rating, but it intrigues me.
Sean

Acid is fun. There's not a whole lot you can compare it to: It's not near as restrictive as a card battle game, because it isn't one, but it's also not completely a tactical strategy.

You really just need to give it a shot and see how it works out.

Are you running the processor up to 333? Mine was bleeding playing FF6 with the 266. I had to use some pretty massive frame skip to make it flow well, and then it looked junky.

Sean
posted 07-09-2005 09:38:56 PM
I run it up to 333 on most, but FF3/6/whatever isn't one I've tried. I have to turn in my geek card there and say that game bored me all to tears.

Try changing emulator versions. Some work a lot better with certain games.

I shall fiddle with it more in a bit. The FAQ was all "333 MAY BLOW UP YOUR PSP, NOT MY FAULT" so I shyed off.

Sean
posted 07-09-2005 09:46:37 PM
It won't.

The PSP is designed to run at 333, current games just don't tax it enough to require full speed. (And it rapes the battery, but I rarely play it mobile anyways, go figure.) Being able to change the system's clock rate with a software toggle of all things is testament to the intentions of more powerful games in the future.

There is no "code breaking". It's just putting an emulator on the memory stick and playing roms. SIMPLE AS PIZZA PIE

The PSP was designed to run applications off of a memory card. There is no way in hell Sony didn't know this was coming. I owned my PSP 5 minutes before I realized emulation was probably possible.

I think my thought process went:

"Hey, these UMDs are neat. What's this camera memory card doing in the box? Oh. Ohhh. Oh sweet blessed emulation community, don't fail me now."

I didn't get the notion of emulated games on the PSP, until I saw (via the PSP menu) that you could play games off of the memory stick. That more than anything is what tipped me off to the possibilities

With FF2, at 333Mhz, the game has a few minor slowdowns in spots, nothing really bad.

FF5 has more noticable slowdowns when they try to get fancy (Specifically, the bit with Boko riding behind the 'Final Fantasy V' lettering), but other than that, plays perfectly.

Same. I remember in IRC I was like, "Khyron! I see you can launch games from the memory stick. Does this mean what I think it means? Emulators on PSP!"

The reason it's so reliant on processing power right now is that nobody's been able to get hardware acceleration to work yet. Everything homebrew is being rendered by that tiny little processor.

How.... Khyron.... uughhhhhh:
The problem is that right now they cannot use the graphics processor. There's no graphics acceleration at all. UMD games use the separate GPU. And the PSP processor runs anywhere from 222-266-333mhz. Emulation on a slow CPU like that is rather slow.

Eventually I am certain that they will discover how to split the load between graphics and sound/everything else so that it speeds up to regular UMD game speeds.

Is emulation still only on the first verison of the PSP or has it broke into the upgraded ones ?

My apartment place gives out either an ipod, psp, or 200 dollars off for a new contract.. Guess I might go with PSP.

The japanese release version (1.0) and American release versions (1.5) work. If you have either and have updated to 1.51 or 1.52, then no, it doesn't work. Yet.
