The Vision had it's downsides, true, and a lot of things sucked about it as you played, but many of those things were better for the game in the long run.
All of EQ feels so cheap and phony now.

I don't know where this myth came from. Lineage 1 only has four million subscribers. EQ has ten million and FFXI has eleven million.
Kind of a late response, but where did you pull those numbers from? It seems like your ass. Neither EQ nor FFXI has hit the 600k active subscribers mark ever, at least according to their press releases. I'm sure if either game had nearly that much you'd see press releases every other week to brag about it.
Lineage, on the other hand, has peaked at nearly 3.5 million subscribers. Actually, if you believe the press releases its well over 4 million, but those those numbers are a bit on the inflated side. Lineage II also has 1.5 million worldwide according to the press releases, which more accurately gauge subscriptions than Lineage.
Unless you mean total subscribers ever? I don't see how you could get those numbers either. FFXI is a relatively young MMOG, and its doubtful it'd have more subscriptions than EQ since release. And even then, Lineage would easily beat out both of them with the way it handles accounts. So yeah... Where did those numbers come from?

there's the whole game cafe thing..
Uh.. so? Cafe or not, you still need to have an account.

I think the deal is that all the gaming cafes have massive amounts of accounts. Like, the cafes pay for them. Not the players. I don't know exactly how much that actually skews the numbers, but I think that was the case that was being made.
What? Someone had to say it.

WTF? What about UO? It was an MMO but not a very good one, barely can be considered any competition to EQ.Competition would mean that both parties are TRYING to put each other out of the game, EQ didn't have to try.
Besides facts like UO had/has many features that were missing from following games, only recently have they been put into the later games, or used in new games. The 2 biggest things EQ had over UO was the rich npc driven quests and the game was in 3d rather than isometric 2d sprites.
Howeverm I made the statement to point out the fact EQ will not die anytime soon, unless SOE makes a huge blunder. UO has survived because their player base is enough to show a profit, and given the size of EQ's player base I think they will keep going strong for a while still. Shit AC is still going and it never was high on the list of MMORPGs, but it's becuase they havve enough dedicated players to make it worthwhile. In fact the only MMO game I know of to completely tank has been EnB, and that was because it was a half ass game to begin with and never got the support it needed.
As for Newer MMO stealing EQ's thunder, yeah it might happen, but if you look at it, you will find alot of MMO are being made in geners outside of fantasy RPG's, Like Planetside, or Jump to Lightspeed. And quite frankly this might be a good thing, since as UO shows, if you get a good base of players, the game becomes a steady source of income.

edit: not to say that it isn't a great game. I'm just saying that's likely part of it. Naota Nandaba fucked around with this message on 08-19-2004 at 11:58 PM.
