Although, as Suddar and I were discussing it does really depend on the so called animal abuser's intent and their character. If he's a senile old man than I suppose it's not his fault really.

But if the person knows what he's doing, and just doesn't care, I seriously believe that severe punishment should be in order. To lack the ability to understand that our domesticated pets need us to survive, is pitiful. And not very helpful to our society. Compassion is very important I believe.

And I mean, who could NOT just adore their animals and want to take care of them and love them to death? Maybe it's just me, but I do believe that it's natural to want to take care of them and if you aren't capable then you just shouldn't own pets.

My craziest animal control story? Hmm...I don't have too many wild ones so far, but I suppose the weirdest one would have to be patrolling a neighborhood trying to catch a pack of wild cats who are chasing dogs away from their food bowls and basically being a nuisances. That was funny to hear on the phone, not so funny to actually get the cats.

Why? He hasn't harmed a sentient being. Sure animals are cute, most people love them and they have behavior patterns that mimic human emotion to some degree but do not forget how many of them we routinely kill in horrible ways for our pleasure. If killing or harming an animal was something I found morally abhorrent I probably wouldn't be able to live with myself due to all the sweet, sweet veal I've eaten in my life. Hell we kill a bunch of them every day in pounds just because we don't know what to do with them and don't want to spend the money on keeping them alive.

Most vet offices have an extremely small budget for rehabilitating animals who could, to be cruelly blunt, die at any time. With intensive care, you can slowly and carefully build an animal's body weight back up to healthy levels, and the neck wound could probably be healed, but there's no real way to tell what sort of damage has been done to the internal organs. Starvation is a horrible, horrible thing...fat goes first, then muscle tissue, then your body starts to consume it's own organs and nerve tissue. Even if they got the poor doggy's body weight back up and got the neck wound healed (which could take surgeries, not to mention room and board, all of which costs moolah) there'd still be a chance that an organ could fail or the nerve damage would be too catastrophic.

Plus there's the harsh truth...very few people want adult animals, much less adult animals who are covered in horrible scars and who may or may not live more than a month or two. Some people might say that surely someone somewhere would take in an animal with a hard luck case, but there's six billion people in the world. If you want to get the phone book and start asking, go for it.

Fact is that too many people breed animals or allow their animals to breed when they have neither the time nor inclination to take responsibility for what comes next. There's a pet surplus out there.

That having been said, I hope the guy who did this to that poor dog does suffer, because someone who could be that cruel to an animal could, as the Gahndi quote pointed out, very easily be that way to other people. If you're given to beating your dog, you're very likely to be abusive to humans in a subservient or servile position to yourself. In any case, very few animals deserve to be beaten, and they certainly don't deserve the slow death of starvation, much less being dumped in someone else's locale to handle.

Personally, I'd like to think that the dog wagged it's tale because it was away from those people. It may have been glad to see someone (after all there's all the signs that it was neglected and restrained in it's imprisonment for an extended period of time). Maybe not. It's just a dog, after all, not a person. But it's nice to think it appreciated the happy time.

And it will no doubt piss some people off, but the fact is if the dog had to die, it's good the doggy didn't suffer any longer. A sad necessity, but a necessity nonetheless. I've said before that being a vet will either kill a soft-hearted animal lover, or it'll be the best place for them. Maybe both. A lot of people can't stand to be there when their pet is euthanized for whatever reason. My friend couldn't stand to be in the room when they euthanized his cat (who was ancient, in miserable shape, and had developed a cancer that was putting it in almost constant pain). I know he would like to think, as would I, that the last person his cat ever saw was gentle, and helped it not be afraid on the way out.

In the very least, you have the guy. He'll pay for what he did, in a manner prescribed by law.
