What do you all think is a good scary movie?

Resident Evil and Pitch Black top my list. The Exorcist is blah, but I scared my family years ago watching it because I got so absorbed in the movie. Halloween was funny; funnier when my date kept hopping from one side of me to the other because he was scared. And Cujo put me to sleep.

Pretty much any movie that does a good job of filling you with a constant feeling of dread and just doesn't scream "boo" every once in a while, where setting and style are the most important aspects.

It's why I like the Silent Hill games so much.

I don't know how to be sexy. If I catch a girl looking at me and our eyes lock, I panic and open mine wider. Then I lick my lips and rub my genitals. And mouth the words "You're dead."

I propose to you a harder challenge... a scary movie for the hearing impaired. I have seen many a horror film, or dark movie, and my friends have always been significantly more chilled than I have. We've come to the theory that a lot of the spookiness comes from the atmosphere built by the soundtrack, which I don't hear and isn't well captioned.

I really would like to see a scary movie though, so I'm in search of one that is chilling and atmospheric that I can actually appreciate. Any help would rock!

The thing about horror flicks is that for me after the first time ya see it it's ruined. I've never been scared by a movie more than once and in that have lost faith in the entire genre.

Anything which builds leaves the scary bits up to your imagination. Blair Witch was great at that, and the last shot is BRRRRRR.

The end of Blair Witch was rather scary if you pay attention to what was going on before they entered the woods. That movie still gives me chills every time I see it.

The Ring is the same way. Freaky shit.

I also liked Puppet Master III, it actually had an interesting story to it.

Event Horizon just flat out creeps you out. Loved it. Wouldn't call it scary exactly, but it was DEFINITELY creepy and shiver worthy...

Pitch Black was dull IMHO, I don't think I ever bothered to finish sitting through the whole thing cause I kept getting bored.

The Ring -when I went to see it in theaters, there were people running out crying. And I was pretty darn scared myself.

The Others -it's just good and scares me a whole lot. Plus, I'm a huge fan of Nicole Kidman.

The Haunting -I know it's somewhat cheesy, but the little ghost children scare me to pieces. A friend of mine told me that you just have to be in the mood to be scared for this movie though.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre -really, really, really disturbing!

You're right that a lot of the fear factor is built up by sound (particularly low-pitch low-volume sound that gets slowly louder and faster to build tension; see Jaws for reference). Lighting also contributes quite a bit. People also tend to be more nervous when cold, and as I recall, you don't get cold either. If you're reading the subtitles, that will detract even more, because it's hard to notice subtle lighting nuances when you're busy reading.

A scary movie for the hearing impaired would need to be more immersive. First off, you'd need it to occupy the peripheral vision, because you won't get that "It's right behind you!" sensation from those back speakers. This probably means wrap-around screens. For best results, connect the room lighting to the movie, so it can be mostly dark, with flashes to draw your attention at appropriate times. This would also help with storm immersion. (I'm pretty sure they do all this for theme park holographic rides.) A lot of details would need to be kept in shadow, so that you just barely notice they're there.

Second, the room would need to be chilled, starting out comfortably warm, and growing slowly colder over the course of the movie. This effect works best with snowstorm or mountain-setting movies. The reverse effect (making the room uncomfortably hot) works better for action movies. Ever notice that horror movies like to snow people in, while action movies burn them out? How about when people breathe out a single, visible billow of chilled breath just as the camera zooms in for the kill.

Though vibration can replicate or enhance the effectiveness of sound, it has to be set up precisely.

Of course, all the usual techniques of horror films need to come into play. I'm not an expert on horror films, so I'll leave these details to someone who knows what they're doing.

To me horror movies are, in essence, what scares you. So someone watching a hack/slash movie getting all freaked out vs someone watching "the ring" where you have no clue whats going on.
I seem to really enjoy alot of religious horror.. like.. Prince of Darkness <i still think one of my favorites of his (John Carpenter)>

eh.. im a horror movie buff i used to have at least 100 horror movies on VHS when i was in high school.. not to mention the books and crap to go along with them

Last two movies I can think of that freaked me out were IT when it first came on TV back in the early 90s, and Child's Play. I hate scary movies with possessed dolls...ever since I saw Poltergeist and that damned possessed clown doll.

And by freaked me out, I mean I'm jumping at shadows and can't go to sleep for a while. IT actually kept me up for a week once. Everytime I'd get into bed, I'd start to see things in the shadows, and I'd get up to pace around the room. Don't think I got more than like 2-3 hours of sleep that week.

That's always reminded me of the "Gentlemen Song" from Buffy

"Can't even shout, can't even cry
The Gentlemen are coming by
Looking through windows, knocking on doors
they need to take seven and they might take yours
Can't call to mom, can't say a word
You're gonna die screaming but you won't be heard."

Of course the whole thing behind it is that the "gentlemen" take away an entire towns worth of voices and then proceed to cut out seven hearts from the silent inhabitants. Now that I think about it they're the only things that wig me constantly..most scary things don't. Sure it isn't from a movie, but CREEPY!

But really...LOOK at that...can ya blame me?
