You're friends will help you, that's what they're for.
Also, what I've done in my life when dealing with problems in the past, is get myself to realize that the past is just that, the past. You cannot do anything about it, so don't keep worrying about it. The present is what matters. If you can keep yourself more focused on what you plan to do with your life from now on, instead of how your life was, it could really help take some of the weight off.
(Hope that paragraph above doesn't sound harsh, not meaning for it to sound that way.)
Of course, what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another. Again, a good therapist/counselor will probably have the best tools to help you integrate your past into your present and move on.

It seems to me that it's truly unimaginable what that would be like, without having experienced it oneself. As such I can offer only sympathy, a shoulder to lean on, and the offer for me as a sympathetic listener always stands.

... and I suck and really can't say anything. What is there to say? I acknowledge it. I know it sucks beyond what the word "suck" has the power to describe, but... can't offer wisdom, help, anything. Nothing fits. One of my failings. I always want to make peoples' problems go and die.
