What's even worse is when these kids commit minor infractions at school and the cops get involved, they're building a criminal record at a very early age, which will disqualify them for a lot of things.

Honor societies, scholarships, and certain group involvement can quickly become out of a child's reach from something as minor as talking back to a teacher.

As it's already been said, zero tolerance = zero thinking. The school district politicians like it because then they dont have to think about it. They simply call the police when a child does anything, rather then deal with it themselves.

This policy in my opinion, is just setting kids up to fail. Treat them like criminals, and they will act like it.

Bingo. Teachers are meant to inspire, not belittle, not incarcerate.

You know, I'm kinda happy I went to the alternative high school I did these days considering all this zero tolerance stuff. My school was pretty much branded as the "troublemakers" school, despite the fact it wasn't the juvie school, you had to apply to get in, it was basically a half breed of private-public schooling. Classes were easier and all that, but it still gave a good education. Anyways, in my school, they were extremely laid back. The teachers and principal basically knew everyone had a knife, or nail clippers, or something else like that. Hell, I had a pocket knife on my keychain. They didn't care. Did anyone at my school ever get stabbed? Nope. The worst that ever happened were a couple of fist fights and that's it.

Zero tolerance policies are way out of line, and even in the right environment like the one I was in, it was fine to carry stuff that'd get other schools to flip the fuck out and expel you. Most of the kids who carried knives did so because it was a tool, not a weapon. That's why I carry a knife, it's a tool for me.

Anyways, that was my ramble on the whole thing. Zero tolerance policies are dumb.

I'm so glad not to deal with the school bullshit anymore.

I carry around a knife on me now, as well as clippers and so on, and no one looks twice.

Then again, I live on a fucking base. Everyone here has a knife or zippo of some sort.

Hahaha, half my school would have been in for life by now by those standards.
Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.
