I have been there a couple times. I suppose it does pass. I didn't have help though. It was something I did myself.

The first time I was 15, my step mother at the time hated my guts and told me to leave the house. She actually told me to pack up and leave. Because I got bad grades in school. I was having a hard time. So, I took my contacts out, put on my glasses, changed clothes, and left the house without her knowing it. I walked to a hill a couple miles from our house and I was going to throw myself off it. Something stopped me though. I don't know what. I guess I just didn't want to die. So I walked back home. I told my father what she said to me, and how abusive she was all those years that he was never around and busy at work. He confronted her, she admitted it, he screamed at her. Then not long after they were divorced.

I started to be happy then.

It is selfish not to help someone considering suicide. All you have to do is listen. Thoughts of suicide are transient, temporary; they do pass if allowed time and distance from the original source of the pain or hurt.

It's not like you can always tell. Not everybody runs around with a big neon sign saying "I'M SUICIDAL". :\

Sometimes it really blindsides you. I guess you just don't know what to expect when people get like that.

Anyway I do think that the lack of sympathy towards suicidal people is somewhat disheartening. I mean I guess it's stupid and cowardly but at the same time there are reasons for their actions. I guess it's one of those cases of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch. We have all these stupid gothy kids pretending to be depressed when they really aren't and it really desensitizes people to the ones with the real issues. Understandly so, but it's just sad.

I'll never forget the time I was really super depressed and I had a VA apointment the VA rep picked up on that and since I have a history when I got home I had a few Sherrif officers waiting for me to make sure I was going to be ok.

Oh, suuuuure, just pull out mitigating circumstances why dont'cha? You and your logic and your rationality and considering all the angles. Outrageous I say!

Seriously, though you're right. I was thinking more of people who are clear-headed at the time and not under some sort of influence (such as those mentioned). Of course, if someone is considering suicide then they probably aren't thinking very clearly.

I suppose the matter warrants more thought than I have given it. I hate being sensible. >_<

The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist: a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain. - Ursula K. LeGuin ~ The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas

I'm not entirely sure someone possessed of rational thought casn end their own life. But people may have a different idea on that.

Gyd, what would you classify people who choose quality of life over quantity? Someone not mentally ill, but perfectly lucid with a terminal illness? To be more specific; let's say someone who isn't depressed even accepting of the fact. Someone facing a long painful agonizing downward spiral?

My roommate wasn't stupid, obviously. But I'm sure those who've known folks who have committed suicide appreciate your opinion. And it's good that you're able to easily categorize it into cowardice with admittedly no experience whatsoever on the topic.

Because I saw it in a movie, it must be true, so I ask.

If your roommate committed suicide, didn't you get straight A's for the semester, or is that a pipe dream made up by hollywood?

I mean no offense, I was simply curious. You don't have to answer. But if you say "Yes, I got straight A's, but would have gotten them anyway!", be prepared for light ribbing in the order of "GYDYON ISN'T A REAL LAWYER!!!OMGZZ"

I agree with this. When you get that depressed, you aren't thinking straight at all. Your brain's chemistry is literally off when you're depressed, so obviously you're not going to act normally.

No straight A's. In fact we were expected to take all our finals that week, although we were allowed to put them off a few days.

My GPA in college was pi (3.1416). I could have done with the straight A's.....
