Trying to educate someone by putting him on the defensive is also the dumbest possible way to go about it, someone who is attacked will never ever evaluate his own actions, he will be too busy defending himself against people he sees as agressors.
Yes 'flames', aka inconstructive arguments completely based on insults are a bad and terrible thing because they do nothing to resolve actual issues and are 'won' or 'lost' based not on what was actually discussed but based on the perception of someone getting omgsoownDDD!!!!!1.
I don't have a problem with a lot of flames, but occasionally people cross a certain propriety line and then it's gone too far. And like it or not, that propriety line is not something you want the mob to determine. Someone in the military might be liberal or conservative, male or female, but calling them a babykiller is never cool, and it's not being a peacenik to say so. There's a number of "untouchable" topics that cause serious damage.
It is, as Parcelan said in a roundabout way, a matter of "Controlled Burns" rather than "Wildfire". The idea is that afterwards, even if you don't like someone, something constructive might have come from it all.
