As for the furry con stuff...eh. People want different things out of the cons they attend, I've never been to one so I can't really say much.
And as for animals... I love my Husky, she's my baby and I raised her from a pup, but that doesn't mean I go an get my rocks off with her...shesh. And anyone who does sexual things with animals can go strait to hell for all I care.

I grew up in bars and overlooked and hated by my dad... mental or physical abuse wasn't uncommon... and as I grew up, I felt more and more in-common with the dogs and wolves around me then the humans. In effect, as I addopted a more buddhist religious belief and practiced varying forms of meditation, I found something else inside of me. Something more feral and something way more animalistic then what is described as being "human"... and one day, during an event only describable as an upper level samadhi-experience, I saw my true self hiding inside of me... an anthropomorphic wolf... and sense I accepted him as part of me, i've been at peace. Self-actualization IS at the top of the hierarchy of needs, isn't it? Ultimately, since then, I have needed drugs, alcohol, or anything else to help me cope with my life or what i've gone through... i've just become and recognized my true self.
I'd say 90% of ALL online furry RPGs usually involve yiffing and are there for the entire experience known as yiffing... however... i'm no longer so shallow (and no, I do not believe myself any better, but i'm in it for more then just sex) and live my life as one (you'd have to meet me to understand; i.e. i don't just bark or howl at random, but i'm QUITE normal... i was accepted to Ivy league schools, and given scholarships to go to them as well, but refused for personal reasons... and monetary ones, anyways...), and one with myself. As well... from all of my experiences... 99.9% of ALL furs have quiet the interesting kinks and i'd say over half of those i've met are zoos, or zoos in the closet. That is from my experiences... as well, furrydom has the dark side... of course... the child molestors (I dated one... don't ask, and I won't tell, but if I see him again... he'll pay, really bad) and what not.
I can not stress enough that no one should judge anyone else for what they do or believe. As a sociology and anthropology major, I understand that what others may do, may seem 'weird' to me, but I can not reject them or say anything ill of them for their personal insides. HOWEVER... do not get me wrong... those who act on such things a child molestation will meet my wrath (because accepting and acting on such horrible things without wanting to change, or even finding no 'bad' from your actions is an extremely eggregious crime to me), but I believe that because i'm a fur, or he is a fur, or she is a fur... you should at least accept that we're into something different then yourself, and that we're no different then you, but just look for other things to be interested in.
