Deth and I just got back from seeing this tonight. This was a fantastic movie. It started and it was going from the beginning. It was fun to sit and try to figure out what things might mean.

For those who don't know, Paycheck is the new Ben Affleck/Uma Thurman movie. Ben plays Michael Jennings, a corporate raider. This sort of corporate raiding involved reverse engineering, stealing ideas from one company and revamping them for another company. After he does the job, his memory of the time he spent is erased. In this way, he sort of lives his life in "highlights" as he puts it in one point of the movie.

Jennings gets a deal from an old friend, Jimmy, who runs a corporation called Allcom. This deal will basically set him for life, but the work will take three years of his life. He goes for it, and he becomes involved with Uma Thurman's character Rachel over the three years.

Fast forward three years. His memory is erased, and the Feds are on his ass. Michael has to piece together just what he was doing those three years, and just what the thing he was working on for Allcom was. His only clues are 20 things that he sent to himself before his memory was erased.

This movie started fast, and the momentum just kept going. Michael went from revelation to revelation, until he'd slowly pieced the puzzle back together again. And just what it was I thought was pretty damn deep. Paycheck isn't your typical action film. It has action, yes, but it's the story that really keeps things going.

My favorite part:

Jimmy tries to send a fake Rachel to meet Michael in a cafe he had arranged to meet her at. Michael is taken in at first, but something he notices in her eyes makes him hesitate. The eye thing is important, because when he first meets Rachel at a party Jimmy throws, he notices her eyes first.

Michael asks the fake "What is my favorite baseball team?" This is revealed earlier in the movie when he watches a tape of them playing. The real Rachel comes in, hits the fake with her purse, at the same time one of Jimmy's boys is trying to shoot Michael from outside the cafe. Rachel ends up on the floor, and the first thing she says is "That would be the Red Sox". I just thought the whole reintroduction of Rachel that way was pretty damn cool.

If you liked Memento, then go see Paycheck. The way Michael had to piece together things was very similar to how Memento was done. If you like Ben Affleck or Uma Thurman, go see Paycheck. In fact, just go see Paycheck. It's that good.

The whole "20 clues to piece together his past!" deal really seemed sorta lame to me, otherwise the movie sounds cool. Maybe it's not as bad as it sounds and a bit more logical. I hope.

It's very logical, and it's better to say the 20 items are things he left for himself to help him in certain situations. I was very impressed with how intelligent the film was about things.

If I say anymore, I give away a very large revelation.

The original title shown in the trailers earlier this year was "Reverse Engineer"... I remember it because it's one of the rare times that they used a technical term correctly for what someone was doing.

I've been waiting for this flick to come out for like 6 months...

The final fight in that movie just ruined it even worse than the movie up until that point had (I'm sorry, but skiing on concrete with your shoes?). Bludgeoning a person in the head with big fucking rocks shouldn't have the same effect on them as harsh language.

Ahhhhh. Isn't the original story called Paycheck? I saw the book at Borders the other day and I think they mentioned that. Paycheck fits nicely, too.

And fuck you Tao, I actually like some substance to my movies and don't go mindlessly see something just because some certain fucknut directed it. I didn't like Kill Bill just cause it was Tarantino. I liked it cause it was a good fucking movie. And I liked Paycheck not for the fucking name of the producer, but because it was a good fucking movie. Go grow a fucking brain and some balls and try to decide on something on its own merits for once, not just cause you're blindly following the fanboi persona.

Sorry for that, but I'm not in a good mood atm and it annoys me when people say someone should like something simply for who did it, and not because it was done well

Who's just kidding? I meant every word I said. I only put that in because I am currently in a bad mood and normally it probably wouldn't bother me as much as it did when I read it just now. So I was apologizing in advance, because were I in a better mood, I probably would have put it with more tact.
