Technically? Five days. But we've decided to crack the first bottles open on Christmas.

omg very sexyful movie. And Jackson stayed true to the ending. Bravo. Half the theater was bawling.
Yes he did, but I don't get why he put all of those weird alternate endings in there, after the main ending, all the rest was just crap he made up.
But that extra 10 minutes wasn't enough to bother me, it's still easily the best movie I've seen in a while.
Bravo!

Lashanna stumbled drunkenly to the keyboard and typed:
"That still only counts as one!"
Easily the best line in the whole movie.

Thinking about your posts
(and billing you for it) since 2001
When the riders were lined up and the king spoke I was almost in tears.
In fact there were a few scenes like that.
Gimli and Legolas affirming thier friendship, the last stand at the Black gates, etc.

This was the wierdest feeling in the world.
See, I'm in the SCA. It's a medivael recreation group. There's Kings, and Queens, and when they come into thier reign, the surrounding barons, knights, etc. swear fealty.
I was sitting there next to another long-time SCA-er, and it was like.. OMG! OMGOMG!
but it was excellent. Completely. Totally. It made me fall in love with Tolkien all over again. I pray he makes the hobbit.
I'm like.. SO excited.
Eowyn and Merry versus the Witch King.
Legolas versus the elephant.
Eomer chucking that spear through the elephant rider. I still want to be Mightomer in the parody.
Shelob.
When the One Ring melted in the fires of Mount Doom, I said "Yes!"; almost screaming it.
But man, they had to cut out a lot to fit it into 210 minutes, obviously. There just better be a few new chapters in the extended DVD called "The Voice of Saruman", "The Houses of Healing" and "The Choices of Master Samwise."
When the Riders of Rohan tear into the invading Orcs, attacking them and looking as though, between them and Gondor, they'd be able to win, and suddenly that crazy warchant emerges: "guadahotarakham-HOO!" or something along those lines. Everyone looks up to see the Oliphaunts marching towards the battle, with the Men of the South chanting and blowing their crazy-ass horns. One of the many "Oh....shit..." moments of the movie.

He was just far too badass for the screen.
I'm still sorta mulling it all over, i'm just too overwhelmed at the moment to put how much I liked it into words...'twas good.
It was good, I didn't think it was utterly spectacular though. The battles were impressive when they weren't using that 'camera too close to make out anything'-angle. IMO they should have cut one of the ending sequences (the bed one preferrably) and shown Gandalf breaking Saruman's staff instead, but it's no huge loss. All the scenes involving Gandalf / Aragorn / Theoden were extremely good.
I'm not bothered by the cutting of the scourging of the Shire even though I liked it in the book, tacking another 45 minutes onto this movie without the ability to pause it at will would have been too much, same with the Gandalf vs. Witch King scene, although I hope that will be on the DVD. I do think they should have shown at least some of Faramir trying to retake the river, if only 30 seconds of fighting.
Shelob was well done visually but to be honest I found the scene boring. There's only so much you can do with a giant spider and audiences are just completely desensitized by tons of huge spider monsters they've seen in the last 20 years of movies, add to that the knowledge that nothing can happen to any of the characters and you get a really dull scene, there's nothing that could have been done about it though, it's an important part of the story and some people would have been up in arms had it been taken out.
The only thing that really bothered me about this movie was Gollum, I found his scenes to be extremely annoying without being funny or interesting, especially since he didn't have much to say most of the time. They didn't have to drive the point that he is really evil into the ground that much. Oh and I am no man!, that was stupid really. [ 12-18-2003: Message edited by: Shazorx / Modrakien ]

Well, I'd have to agree. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! I know a some one who was a bit dissopointed durring a few scenes, like the lack of Easterlings besides the ones on the Oliphants, they should have gave Theoden a more heroic death, and they didn't show the knights with Faramir in battle, only the charge, and after. END SPOILERS!!
I seriously hope they fix some of those things in the Extended. It was probobly my favorite of the three, but they are one story not 3 so it is all good.
You knew what they were doing, you knew they were going to lose. And the way it was done brings a tear to your eye instead of sitting on the edge of your seat. Jackson did a hell of a job when he mixed the two the way he did.
It seems to me that most of the complaints are really pretty petty and the people would not be happy unless we had a word for word translation form the books ala Shogun. And frankly that would have sucked.
I for one feel that the Lord of the Rings is a heart renching and hope filled story written by a man with a great imagination but without the ability to tell the story in the best way.
In other words I feel that the movies stay more true to the underlying story than the original books do. They manage to tell the story to the masses instead of the select few who can drudge through Tolkien's writing "style".
The only thing throughout the whole series that really bothered me was the removal of the Scourging of the Shire. I feel that this was an important plot point to the movie that finished the Character Development of Merry and Pippin. However at the same time I see why it was removed.
The theatre's power failed about a half hour into the movie. (right when Theoden was rallying his men to haul ass to Minas Tirith)
We waited for a fucking hour on it before we left, and won't be able to make it back out to a theatre until after Christmas,
It's not something people hear about.

And the asskicker: it lives up to the hype. I think we got a winner, folks.
Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, it's just the opposite. - John Kenneth Galbraith
They tend to only nominate one epic each year, and I think it would win the nomination over Master & Commander and Last Samurai...
But they probably won't give it to LotR because A) It's Fantasy, and B) It's successful.
A lot of times, the Academy feels that the success of the movie is a reward in it's own right.
That being said, It would be real nice to see some sort of acknowledgement for a consistantly good trilogy.
I mean, Godfather and Star Wars were great, but they both had some very low points.
LotR had no real discernable lowpoints.
Oh, and as for the DVD:
There will be no Scourging of the Shire.
House of Healing will be included.
Grima will stab Saruman. I'm not sure how/where they're doing this... Uh, maybe they moved that scene to Isengard.
That's just what was said from an interview by Newsweek with Peter Jackson.
Also, showing Faramir fighting to retake the river would have completely ruined the impact of the scene.
Also, I liked Denethor. I mean, I didn't like him, but you weren't supposed to, and he was good in that.
And also, more Witch King. As I've probably already said. Maybe in this thread even.

Tegadil had this to say about John Romero:
The only thing that really annoyed me was the death of the witch king. The one liner was way too cheesy, and I was disappointed. That mofo should've taken on a bunch of the dead soldiers before being zerged like the Oliphant.
Have you read the books at all?
Easily the best part of the movie experience for me was when Frodo got stabbed by shelob because as soon as it happens the theater went silent and all I heard was one guy say "Aw, hell no!" followed by "Shit!"

Azizza had this to say about Cuba:
Have you read the books at all?
Nope.
Oho.
And yeah, I didn't use the spoiler tag. If people are reading this far into the thread and still dont' expect to see spoiler or DIDN'T READ THE BOOKS, then to hell with you
I realize based on what others have said that I will prolly be roasted alive for this, but meh.
RotK, imo, was not the best of the three. Sure, if it had ended at the point that Aragorn was crowned, sure. It was great up to that. But the sappy, mostly made up ending after that point just brought the movie down quite a few notches for me. Call me one of those book lovers if you want *shrugs*. The whole Arwen thing, I could deal with them adding so they could have a love interest thread, but... to just drop out Saruman after the 2nd movie as if he didnt exist... they cut out too much, in my opinion.
I was really looking forward to seeing Gandalf own Saruman and snap his staff, but it never happened, and Pippin just happened to find the seeing stone under the waters of Isenguard. And then they get back to the Shire and la la la, everything is a'ok, Sharkey/Saruman never existed.
Overall, RotK was good, but kinda disappointing
