Dude...as of tonight, I have had countless amounts of tequila, gin and vodka.

Yet, even I can realize how astoundingly idiotic that comment was.

Christ Almighty, I don't think there's even a word for how stupid you are. You make me want to vomit, such is the disgust I feel for knowing there is such a flaw...such an aberration in our society. Good God, I think you may singlehandedly be responsible for all that is evil in this world. All of Satan's works can credit thier insipiration directly to you.

Sweet Baby Jesus.

you said "If I went, the forces that be would eagerly spit me back out" to which i replied most people spit. I was suggesting you are nothing more than someones foul spunk to a celestial being.

If it werent for the fact i cant get to sleep I wouldnt be resonding to your drivel. let me assure you my opion of you is no better than yours of me.

Not a chance, mi amigo. Even if your mouth says differently, your mind cannot help but acknowledge my superiority to you. You're trying very hard to conceal it, but it's clear by our responses that you're just dirt beneath my shoes.

Even if you don't know it, everyone who reads this does, and in the end, everyone's opinion but yours matters ^_^

I shall have to obtain you a copy of Snow Crash, dear. I think Hiro Protagonist, the main character, would fit your mold. You might also check my bookshelf for the Curse of the Mistwraith books. Arithorn is the "hero" in them, but I wouldn't exactly say he has a lot of heroic traits.

Oh, and Kat, I agree wholeheartedly with Sam Vimes, especially foiled against Carrot's heroic personality. But I don't know if I'd include Rincewind and Death in there. Rincewind always seemed to me more as someone who stumbles clumsily into being a hero, rather than being someone missing key heroic traits. In fact, I doubt he has ANY heroic traits, coward that is

Death is a hard one to pin down. He's a very neutral sort, and he doesn't really do anything entirely heroic, it's more of his doing his job sort of thing.

But I do agree about Vimes. He has antihero written all over him

Grendel, from..uh, Grendel. It's basically Baowulf told from the monster's PoV, and you gain perspective about why he did what he did. Pretty good read actually

excellent book, but he is not a antihero IMO

hero
n 1: a man distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and
strength; "RAF pilots were the heroes of the Battle of
Britain"

Hiro displays this when he sneaks onto the raft to rescue his young felmale partener
2: the principal character in a play or movie or novel or poem

3: someone who fights for a cause [syn: champion, fighter,
paladin]

Hiro displays this when he learns about the nature of the drug snow crash and acts to stop its spread.. in addtition he develops a imunnity to the drug and instead of sitting it out and jsut selling all his information and letting someone else deal with the mess he acts and eliminats the threat
5: (classical mythology) a being of great strength and courage
celebrated for bold exploits; often the offspring of a
mortal and a god

Hiro is a cyber god.....

great book if you havnt read it you have missed out

Hiro may perform heroic things, but personality wise I would not classify him in that role. As Deth pointed out, Batman is an antihero. You could easily see him doing the sorts of things heroes do, but he lacks some of the particular qualities that make a true hero.

I think Hiro Protagonist is more that sort.

Most of Neil Gaiman's protagonists are pretty anti-heroic - look at American Gods, Sandman, and Smoke and Mirrors. In my opinion, almost anyone that could be considered a protagonist in any of those falls under the antihero category.

Props to whoever mentioned Roland of Gilead.
