Got my first one last night... was going 150 in a 100 (that's km/h for all you americans!) and my ticket came to a total of:

$335.00.
gaddamnit.

but there is one question I have: will my parents get a notice about it through the insurance company (I'm under my parents insurance, and it's their car)?

Baka. You're not suppost to get caught speeding. This should teach you not to make it a habit. I'll admit, I speed, but never for more than a minute at a time. It's not a good habit, one that gets really damned expensive.

Speeding tickets go against your license. IIRC, anytime something goes against your license, the insurance company is notified. So they'll get a notice. Better to tell them before that happens.

And why the hell were you going so fast? Not to be mean, but speed limits are in place for a reason, and what you did was dangerous not just to yourself but others.

Most cops (at least here in the states) will shrug off 5mph over the limit (more on major highways, if you're travelling at par with a cluster of other vehicles).

Now...150kph is roughly 93 miles an hour. 100kph is roughly 62 miles per hour. Depending on what kind of car you drive, other vehicles (or solid objects) involved, weather conditions, etc, that's the difference between "severe concussion, cracked ribs, broken nose" and "chunky salsa" in a collision. One can only hope you were in a sufficiently isolated area.

That having been said...

In the States, with it's system (can't speak for Canada), the more egregious levels of speeding can put points on your license (you can argue it down in court in most cases), which in turn jacks up your insurance rates. 30 miles per hour over the speed limit (or in your case, 50kph over the limit) is what I could consider "egregious".

Of course, as Sean pointed out, 30mph over is Felony Speeding, and could carry some nasty jail-related punishments. 15mph over is usually "automatic suspension of license" punishment.

Of course, concealing the situation only makes it worse. Sooner or later, your parents will find out, at which point your ass is grass. And if they think you hid the situation from them, your ass will be more grassy. It's cliche to say so, but it really is better to 'fess up now.

On the other hand, you've learned a very important and expensive lesson. Speeding isn't the worst sin in the world, but for the love of all that you hold dear don't do it to that degree again

30 miles over is criminal speeding. Unless you had cocaine or a dead body in the trunk, you shouldn't have been going that fast. It's a felony and pretty dang dangerous.

I was driving to school this morning and I have to go through a school zone to get to school (go figure). The speed limit is 15Mph from 7:00 - 9:00am but I looked at my clock and it was after 9:00 so I knew I could go 40 and still be ok. The guy ahead of me was going the same speed.

Then a cop behind me flashes his lights. I know I'm not doing anything wrong so I assume he's going for someone else. The guy ahead of me pulls over and the cop passes me and pulls him over.

Just then I realize... I never set the clock in my car back an hour for daylight savings. It was 8:45 and I was going 25Mph over the speed limit.

The only reason I don't have a ticket now is because the guy ahead of me pulled over before I could realize this, heh.

well I usually do around 115-120. It was 1:30 AM, I was 3 hours from home, and I was tired... I guess i just didn't check the speedometer often enough, but when I realised Iw as going 150, that's when I slowed back down to 120 (the cop thought I slowed down because I saw a car with it's lights off, but it was just by accident, I barely saw the car before I passed it, it was off to the side of the road)... I guess after that I must have let my foot get heavier (well not get heavier, but it applied more pressure due to natural weight), I was NOT intentionally speeding... I was pretty tired and still had a 3 hour drive ahead of me.

for those of you who kinda know the area, I was in London, and was driving towards Barrie, actually, I was one exit away from my house... and I was going to get off at the next exit and get gas. The Highway was completely empty, clear roads for miles (apparently) because the OPP are confusing to me. LThis guy caught me from a bridge overpass, and followed me for 3 k before he stopped me... but I saw no lights in my rearview mirror (at all) until he flashed the blues and reds... unless he was following either without his lights or over 5 k back, I would have seen him O_o

>< I'm so screwed. If I remember correctly, 50 over is an automatic court date and a 30 day suuspension. He bumped it down to 145 for me. It was my first offense, and I have an absolutely clean driving record (well, not now.)

I thought it was double the speed limit for a suspended liscence.

Cruise control is your friend.

Still, for the non-Ontarioans, sounds like you were on the 400 series of highways, so we're talking 4+ lane highways. (Correct me if I'm wrong) which are listed as 100, but going 120 and you're passed by everyone and their grandma.

So this isn't like someone was tearing throuhg some 2 lane road at 150, it was highway driving, and 'only' going 30klicks over what is normal on the highways. (Still inexcusable but not quite as horrible ).

In any case, First thing you should do is tell your parents; it's better they find out now then when the Insurance bill comes in (and considering the way rates are going up here you want to give them warning).

Also talk with your parents and decide ASAP if you want to fight the ticket, or at least talk to one of those Ex-Copper Legal service lawyers. Since he's already lowered the ticket down a little there isn't as much leeway, but you never know what will happen. Talk to one of those Services from the area the cop is from; that way the Lawyer can tell you if the Cop is likely to fight back hard or be willing to deal further.

Just as a side story, my boss was in a similar situation (but even worst off; he'd been doing 130 down one of those 2-lane back-country roads that are usually listed at 80). He chose to fight it even after the cop lowered it, and actually managed to get the amount lowered down to the equivalent of about 110 or so in the end. (But his lawyer told him the *only* reason he got away with it is because the lawyer was representing him and another guy to the same cop, but the other guy decided not to fight in the end and some other slick talking got them throuhg; Sorry if I'm not very clear, I heard this story second hand a few months ago.

Anyways, that's my looney's worth of advice, do with it what you will.

Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and teeth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers.

In NC, as 0f 1997 (the year I have the big fat black book of highway driving laws of), 15mph over is automatic 30 day revocation of license (at which point you go and pay to get it back) plus whatever fines there are for driving, plus possible (likely) points on your license, especially if you've got past speeding offenses. At 30mph, it's automatic revocation of license, fines, plus you'll be charged with reckless driving. The higher you were going, the more likely it is that you'll be charged with the felony variant of Reckless Driving.

And near as I can tell (from the rulebook I got to study to get my license here in Indiana) it's pretty similar. Plus in Indiana they have all sorts of laws set up to protect motorists stopped on the side of the road, and police officers.

Soooooo...you can rack up some serious penalties pretty quick here in the States, at least in some places.

The big thing, as I said before, is that 30mph at higher-end rates of speed can mean the difference between pain and death. If you're going 60mph and hit a slick patch of road or a particularly unpleasant pothole, lose control or have a blowout or whatever, it's rough enough to keep control of the car in the best of circumstances awareness-wise. At 90+ mph, you're looking at some pretty severe possibilities, even if no one else is involved, even if you've got an airbag and are wearing your seatbelt.

And you were sleepy. I've driven tired before, and I regretted it every time I did. Not because I got into accidents or anything (usually it was like a 10 minute drive home from a friend's house), but because I knew it wasn't a great idea. But then I tend to guilt myself over stuff like that. In any case, I know my perception was lowered, reflexes slowed, etc. And that's driving 45-60 in town and back-road areas in NC. I can't imagine doing 90 and having slow reflexes.

So like I said...$335 bucks is a pretty sharp poke in the ass, but it could have been infinitely worse. You could have died, you could have wrecked someone else (or worse), you could be charged with a felony. If you get off paying 335 and increased insurance rates, I'd run with it, and accept you made a mistake and won't do it again, which seems to be what you're saying.

In any case, I hate to be the responsible adult...but better you tell your parents early. Hell leave them a note when they're home and go out if you're scared of an immediate blowup. But it's better that you be the one who tells them in an upfront and forward manner than them finding out later and detonating like a claymore mine on ya.

I used to live next to an "empty rural road". My kid sister used to ride her bike on that road. She would walk along side it to get to a neighbor's house.

At those speeds, she wouldn't have had time to get out of the way. She could have easily been killed by someone by you.

I was gonna post on here, anyway.

First off, a question: Obviously, you were too tired to be able to even control your speed. What made you decided that that would be okay to go out driving? And at nighttime? While the streets would be more bare, a collisions would be harder to avoid due to the lack of visibility. Compound that to you being drowsy. Not a very smart combonation.

Now before anyone starts blaring about how I'm jumping on her or anything, don't jump the gun. Kegwen, though maybe with a bit of edge in his written tone, was essentially correct. If she's doing excessive speeding on a high-way with no other cars around, then well, she got what's coming to her.

I have a friend, Dave, who was driving home one night from another state, I forget from where exactly, but it's irrelevant. He came upon this semi who was doing about 110MPH on an 80MPH highway. Don't ask me how that works.

The semi eventually gets away from him, going that fast. A bit down the road, he pulls into a rest stop. There's a car that's been completely devastated there. He talks to the guy who owns it, who miraculously wasn't seriously injured. The guy said as he was pulling out, a semi clipped the front end of his car and sent it rolling.

Imagine if that had been a full-on collision...damn.

So, Beau, while you weren't driving a semi, imagine if you HAD accidently collided with someone at that speed.

Ok, speaking as a cop (and hands up to everyone else here that posted on this thread that can say that), there's something I want to say about this, but first:

Several folks here need to calm the heck down. There's no need for such venomous comments to the girl. She knows she's made a mistake, and nowhere do I see her trying to weasel out of the fact that she was speeding. She knows she was speeding, she knows what the consequences are, she knows what could have happened, and I'll be willing to lay $1000 right here and now on the fact that she damned well regrets it too.

There's no need for people to start jumping up and down and hollering blue bloody murder at the poor kid. She knows she screwed up. Say something like "Well, I hope you learned your lesson" and leave it go. It doesn't directly affect anyone else here, so there's no need for anyone else to get their panties in a twist.

Excessive speeding on the roads is a no-no. Everyone with any common sense knows that. It doesn't stop folks from doing it though, and believe me, whether is the US, Canada, Sweden, Australia, UK, or Greenland, the police WILL catch the people doing it. We might not catch them every time, but you can be sure that they will be caught, and they will be dealt with.

So, in the end, stop beating the kid over the head with this. She knows she has fucked up, and she knows that apart from the law punishing her over it, her parents are going to make her pay the consequences too.

I'd be incredibly surprised (and downright disappointed) if she ever did it again. I just wish I could say that about many of the other people I see (and catch) speeding on a weekly basis.

Edit to correct a typo.
