I was wondering how many people here come from a nuclear family. Parents still together, both alive, no dark secrets like rape, affairs, beatings, or the like. You'd think it'd be a common thing, but I know very few people who actually come from one.

Nothing really bad about my family when I was growing up.

My mother's FIRST marrage however, was a different matter. My two eldest sisters (half-sisters actually) would answer the poll differently.

Nowdays, my parents are more living together than married. I think sometimes that they would divorce each other if they could afford to, just to be rid of each other. They're both old, and not in the best of health, but both of 'em can't stand the thought that the other might be worse off and get more attention. Love 'em dearly, but wanna smack 'em with a bat sometimes, you know?

I answered YES, because that's how it was growing up. Now, I would almost say NO.

I believe in the existance of magic, not because I have seen proof of its existance, but because I refuse to live in a world where it does not exist.

My mom is an emotionless uncaring person who sits and watches TV all day and reads mystery novels. She gave up being a lawyer with a 6 figure salary to become a school teacher, because she didn't enjoy her work, and now she doesn't enjoy being a teacher.

My dad moved out when I was 13 there abouts, and finally got himself on his feet by the time I was 14, and I went and lived with him. Last year his girlfriend moved in with us. She gets on my nerves all the time, but I tollerate her none the less.

Nope.

My folks got married at ages 28&30, had me about exactly one year after getting married, and one sister afterwards. We've had foster kids in and out at times, and later on exchange students from the local college. Growing up the family had a lot of rough edges - I was cruel, my sister was a brat, my dad had no sense of humor, and my mom had major mood swings, but we've all gotten better over time, and always stuck together.

On the other hand... by their religious beliefs (and by beliefs I mean beliefs, not a name they call themselves) my parents can in fact not get divorced. Pieces of paper wouldn't help, they honestly believe in that "till death does us part" stuff.

I wouldn't call my growing up idyllic by any means, but my family is still together and probably always will be.

Lets see here...

I've never seen my dad. Him and my mom got divorced before I was born. Last I heard, he was in a jail in california for dealing drugs.

I have a sister, who was given up for adoption when she was born, since my mom wouldnt have been able to afford her. I dont know who she is, where she is, anything.

I grew up with my grandma and grandpa taking care of me mostly. To the point that I called my gradma 'nanny' and my great-grandma 'grandma'.

So, yea... non-nuclear family. The only thing that might make it so I can call it a 'nuclear' family is that I was born and raised in Los Alamos, NM, and my grandpa worked at the Lab there.

My parents have been married for 22 years, There's me in the family, and my younger sister. The only real problem is that where I'm so damn similar to both my parents, I tend to fight with them, but we're cool. At the end of the day, the fight is gone, and we're still a happy family. They both work stable jobs, etc.

I guess this is a nuclear family, however the family outside of my direct family, well shit they're some of the most fucked up people alive.

My father's father died in a hunting accident, but the entire family (Save for this immediate family, dad told me the real story) said he comitted suicide over the guilt he felt for sexually abusing his wife. The funny part is, this woman is so fucked up in the head that she's tried to pick up greaving husbands at their wives funerals. She's a real big, drunken skank. Only the two oldest children know the difference (My father, and his sister) and all the other siblings are all like "o dad sucked"

And on my mother's side, shit, they're all fucking crazy. I wont get started on their problems.

parent's still together, though my dad's on his last leg...

Brother lives with them because of his accedent (long story but he was dead when the parametics got there... they resus'ed him.)

Granted my Dad's side of the family are well off happy families on Long Island, my mom's side is well, we're rednecks ;P Huntin' drinkin'... stuff like that. Yes my mom's sister is drunk from when she gets up till when she goes to bed, her husband abuses her and keeps her drunk... don't even get me started on how her kids are...

Got a druggy for a cousin who likes to cause trouble so he'll be up in the county. (Hey, bed, clothes, food.. everything's paid for... why not!)

Got the over religous aunt and uncle... *shudder* (Who's son is said druggy)

fun side of the family...

My answer has to be yes. Mom and dad DO get in some giganto fights because both of them are more stubborn than.. Something thats really stubborn. But in the end they just kinda ignore each other for a few hours, then its back to normal happy happy time again.

Mom comes from an intensely strong military background. My grandfather was an officer and he would always be moving around, taking the family with him. My mom has been practically everywhere in the world because of it, and has seen some interesting things, and experienced the somewhat intense military life.

My dad just plain didnt really enjoy living with his family because his dad was kinda strict, so when he turned 16 or 17 he voluntarily went to military school for god knows how long, and he became a peace keeper and went off to whatever he had to do.

I could go on in greater detail, but what I'll say is that all in all I have a very very interesting family, which is still quite alright.

I guess in the technical sense we are a nuclear family... mom, dad, kids. Well, my brother moved out maybe two months ago, so just me now. Parents have been married 20+ years but they can't stand each other. So on the outside... yeah, I guess we're a nuclear family. It's my grandparents that are fucked up.

My parents got divorced before I turned 1.

My dad cares more about his job then he does me, but I still see him every other weekend. He thinks that I should be acting like I'm 30 years old right now, so he doesn't help me with my mental or emotional problems at all. Tells me to take them all like a adult should and then leaves me there with no help at all. Did I mention he's 42 and my stepmom is 25?

My mom is a hardcore alcoholic. I have a little sister from her and my stepdad.(who is a asshole and pretty much made my childhood a living hell)They got married when I was 1 or 2 and he beat me alot when I was younger so I spent alot of time as a child in therapy. There has been question of rape when I was younger, but that's one of those repressed memories if it actually did happen. But you can ask alot of my friends and family members, I'm pretty damn mature for a 16 year old because of all of this.

But I'm going to give a big ol' no on that.

Possible "Dark Secret." My dad had married someone before my mom. Dunno if that counts, seeing as MY parents never divorced, but apparently my dad's first son is out there somewhere.

Pretty much everything Jajahotep said (since she is my IRL sister); Parents divorced after 20+ years (though technically the last few years of that they were both avoiding going forward with the divorce proceedings so they wouldn't be perceived as the bad guy); both remarried. Dad's wife was a freaky little monster at first, but now she's mellowed out, and Mom's husband was a lying, cheating druggy.

Despite that, however, I would say I got everything I needed emotionally, intellectually, and financially. Had to grow up a bit faster than I would say is normal at a point or two due to the strains of the divorce, but overall I had a great childhood.

What really screws up the average is Jajahotep...she's a freaky lil girly.
