It could be a 'craze' line. Basically, a crack that you can see on the outside, but isn't all the way through the enamel. If it isn't bothering you, then you'd just leave it. Nothing at all to worry about; plenty of people get them. My mother has some (She's a dental assistant).
If it's gone through the enamel, then it'll start getting more sensitive, which is when you get it checked out.
Getting cracks in the tooth's enamel is very common if you grind your teeth or clench it. If you have a bite imbalance then you could end up grinding your teeth without realising it.
ABSOLUTELY Worst case scenario, Maradon, if the crack goes the ENTIRE TOOTH, then you get it pulled and get a bridge, however that is EXTREMELY rare.
If the crack does go through the entire enamel, and is starting to get VERY sensitive, especially to hot and cold, then you may need to get a crown. As long as you don't get a porcelain crown, which look ugly I am told, there's really no problem.
The best thing you can do, Maradon, is not to clench or grind your teeth, don't use it as tools (Like me; I use mine to open bottlecaps that are on too tight), and don't eat (chew) ice.
All this info brought to you by my father, the dentist (My mother happens to be his assistant).
I dunno why it's called a "craze" line...but I think that's what it is. It feels a tad funny but the tooth is not the least bit sensitive to hot or cold or sharp variations thereof (just had a bowl of hot chili and a glass of cold milk, just to test).
I'm fairly certain I don't grind my teeth, though. Wierd.
Especially considering that the other option is gold.
I smashed it off as a child (after my teeth stopped growing, damn Murphy's Law), by impacting it at high speed against a pavement.

I didn't.

I made this up, don't ruin it for the wussies who are afraid of the dentist.

You were riding a bomb a la Dr. Strangelove?
And wasnt that movie The Dentist the one where he pulled out all of a woman's teeth without novacain?
IF you need a crown (Which it sounds like you don't), you do NOT want to get a porcelain-to-metal (I mised that part before) crown, as they do not look good. You do want a porcelain one, however.
