It couldn't be "seen" that way. That's the way it is.
Lord Protector was a real title way back in ye olden Medieval day. It was the overall leader of the military. Oliver Cromwell created it when he helped topple the Monarchy and became the de facto dictator of England for a short time.

It wasn't unusual for knights of fame to become famous landowners, or nobility, (or in other words, lords.)
Besides, it doesn't necessarily imply nobility, just leadership...

As a funny note, all the previous Paladin Class names were the names of Shadowknight NPCs.
