Also the problem with splinter cell.

First, make sure it isn't a stupid obvious problem like heat. Locking it away in a cabinet isn't a good idea. (You'd be surprised how many people I got in the store that didn't think of that)
If all else fails.. Take it back and get a new one.
Be sure to bitch a lot.

Does it do it with Splinter Cell and Halo?
All the games I have except Halo.

Mine is on a wood platform, with ventilation in the back of the cabinet, and has yet to lock up on me.

It's in my room. You can't be in my room and be more than four feet from some sort of electronic device.
But it isn't near anything running unless you count the TV.

cripes, do you need a damned separate cooling system? XBox is HUGE *and* has heat issues?
Just like any other system that you dont allow to cool properly
And Maradon: My room is full of electronic stuff too, and no probs.
sounds like a bad xbox. Return time

Glad I bought the optional return policy warranty thing.
wtf...where do you have to PAY for a return policy??!
Ah, see the edit.
even if you DIDNT buy that, they would likely still take it back, most places have a 7-30 day policy that takes returns for whatever reason unless its a game or movie or whatnot (piracy reasons and stuff) [ 01-13-2003: Message edited by: Falaanla Marr ]

The melee attack is actually pretty useful. Kills those small guys outright in normal mode.

With the default controls, that can become a chore when you have to turn left and right to hit them.
And the best monsters to use melee attacks on are grunts (small guys with fat armor) and hunters (big huge guys with shields)

I don't understand hehe
...Because unless the guy you are trying to hit with a melee attack is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, then it is difficult to hit them.
Because turning left and right, and melee attacking, requires the same thumb.

Actually you'd be surprised how many electronics stores have some seriously wonky ideas about returning electronics. Restocking fees and such. Really nasty. Mom would have had to pay for the restocking warranty on her new VCR if she hadn't bought it from where she did. Warranty on the product just means XBox will send him a new machine if it's busted. You still have to pay to send it in.

Unless it's a company like Nintendo, who will not only repair your system for free while it is under warrantee, but will also pay for the SHIPPING to GET it fixed.
That's why a lot of companies added a 10-20 dollar optional charge to electronics over the holidays.

Things I REALLY like about the system:
--------------------------------------
Hacked and slashed by yours truly. I was bored.
The RGB video you all were talking about is not just for HDTV. It is just a higher form of sending the Video signal. you have RCA, Svideo, then composit/RGB they go in that order from worst to best quality.
It sounds to me like you have a bad X-Box. I would look into getting it replaced.
Just a FYI.
Microsoft also pays for shipping both ways to repair any defective X-Box that is under warranty.
Also it is almost always better to get your system warranted through your place of purchase. Not only do they offer longer warranties, but for the most part they are fairly affordable. It is also much easier to deal with a local retailer than with a faceless company on the other side of the country.
Most electronic stores I know of do not take returns on open hardware. Most will do exchanges on defective hardware within 14 days, but rarely longer. Check the fine print before ya buy. =)

Not to be annoying, but where did you read that? Everywhere I have read has said that the xbox is very easy to develop for due to it being so similar to pc's. (and not talking to you but meleeing in Halo is really not that hard once you use the controls for an hour or two.)

This is default controls

Yellow is the Video line, Red is the right channel, and White is the Left. Unless you see more than those audio lines some out the back, you wil need to connect it to a reciver capable of useing the Surrond sound format. Most newer steros, and top of the line tvs will do this. IMHO, The S-video had little effect on the picture unless you have a high-end Tv/Monitor , or a HDTV.
I have a really crappy tv, and i cna see a huge noticable difernce with svideo, it effectively gets rid fo msot jaggies,a swell as make allt eh letterings and fotnsmuch neeter
Accidentally turned in the broken one with Halo still in the drive. Fux.
Had to call them, and they're holding on to it for me, but I won't be able to pick it up until day after tomorrow >_<
On the upside the new X-Box works wonderfully. I have two of my favorite CD's stored fully in the hard drive now and am using them as the background music for Sega Rally 2002, which is extremely fun.
The S-Video adapter just happens to also be the Dolby Digital adapter, and the composite video adapter as well, all in one convenient $15 package, which I picked up today
