1. When you lay a color on top of an existing image, you tend to leach out highlights and shadows... make sure you restore them before you consider yourself done.
2. Don't skip the small things: hair lines, around jewelry, the fact that you can see through the sleeves... it all adds up to make the final image work or fail.
3. Don't settle for the color levels, contrast, and background of the image you're given. Fix your color levels so the image is most appealing. Adjust your contrast to maximize highlights and shadows (but don't go too far). And, change the background to suit.
4 Don't be afraid to add shadows, highlights, image tweeks and color changes to produce the desired effect.
