But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate their contribution to music at large. No style of music has developed in a vacuum in like five thousand years. Everything had some other source. None of it is completely new, none of it is really that ground breaking when taken in the spanse of all music whenever.
So why like or dislike any of it? When I was a little kid I heard some music from the 50's/60's (off the American Grafitti soundtrack, interestingly enough) and now at 23 (almost 24) I find the music my Dad listened to in his pre-teen years soothing. There's a certain nostalgia. It's comforting.
On the other hand overexposure can turn nostalgia into hated memories. I can't stand most of the well-known Beethoven pieces to this day. I know he's great and made a lot of contributions, just don't like him.
But I've found that as I got older, I can come to appreciate the things I don't like. I listen to Beethoven now.
Maybe Azakias just hasn't gotten to the point where she can forget the overexposure terrors of youth yet hehehehehe
Or maybe she really doesn't dig the old stuff. Doesn't make her wrong.
As for the Anniversary of Elvis stuff...well...I equate it to the freaks who go to theaters at midnight to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show dressed up in costume. They're a small cluster of die-hard freaks who take admiration too far. Every star has their freakish followers.

I love the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix, and The Doors, but I can't stand elvis at all.
And Mort... dude, you like techno and diss David Bowie, therefore I will not listen to you.

Status Quo? My sympathies.
You live in Birmingham, right? That's... (and I'm probably wrong) south-west of London, right?
Well, if I ever told anybody in Memphis (where I live) that I thought Elvis was and is crap, they'd...I dare not contemplate it, or else this will be another Deth Essay. Anyway, I'm surrounded by Elvis all the time. Elvis stores, Elvis restaurants, Elvis dildos. Especially this week. All these people here for Elvis' 25th aniversarry. I say fuck 'em. Oriental bastards with their hair moussed all Elvis-like running around everywhere. God, it makes me sick.

I'm not an oldies hater, and I was not overly exposed to these bands. I liek the older rock bands like Kansas, or Nazareth, or The Animals (House of the Rising Son, owns yo!) The Tokens, etc.
I also do not understand what Elvis or the Beatles did that made them so great, aside from repressed feminine hormornes and teen lust. I mean by comparison during each of their ages, there were much much better bands. Marketing/fluff owns all. So yes, Elvis and The Beatles are the Britney Spears/N'Sync's of today. They are perfectly comparible.
The Elvis mourners scare me.

Um. Not quite, try North West, about a hundred miles... where's that EC map that was posted a while ago?

Oh wow, I was way off. I, for some reason, thought Birmingham was on the coast. Turns out, unless the map is all biffed, it's about dead centre of England.
Either way, I'll be in England for a couple days or so in this October in the London area (then again, to get across England doesn't take that long ).

It takes two and a half hours to get here on the train, come visit the leckie, you know you want to!!
Does that mean I'm a witch?
The reason I hate Jimi stems from two things, basically. one: people keep saying he's the BEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER, and I, honestly, do NOT see it. If 11 year olds can mimic his stuff perfectly... eh.
Also: Sibling... plays... Jimi... all the time... he wrecks music.

Can the eleven year old play a right-handed guitar upside down and mimic his stuff perfectly?

They revolutionized music in their age.
Elvis came around in the era boring music, and shook everything up. Granted, I dislike Elvis, but if not for Elvis, none of the artists we know and love would be mainstream, we'd all be listening to Perry Como still.
And if not for the Beatles, well, most, if not all modern music came about because of the Beatles.
I can't stand Elvis.
Pink Floyd kicks ass.
Never really listened to much of the Doors.
David Bowie sings well, and was hot in the Labyrinth!

Jimi was left-handed so he turned the thing upside down and re-stringed it to match

You sure he restringed it? I know Cobain restringed his, but I don't know if Jimi did - I'll have to check a picture to find out.
And I think what Fae is saying is that at those times there were revolutions in music. But Elvis and the Beatles were not *the only* ones responsible. They were just a handful of many.
It was the marketing that brought them to the forefront. Many others at the time were defying convention and were ignored because they weren't marketed the same way.
I agree with Fae.

Pretty much. Market ruled, as did payola.
Elvis only "shook things up" because it was publicized, and the reaction was favorable. Thus teen idolism was born. Notice Elvis became a two bit, obese, drug dealing/taking, Vegas hack once the marketing and appeal wore off. Jerry Lee Lewis ran cirlces around Elvis musically, but his scandal however was not as favorable, therefore he died out and his idolism was cut short. It's all in the marketing.
For the Beatles, you have a second rate boy band, that, marketing wise, marked the british invasion. There was nothing special about them, and even by their time they were dorky looking, BUT they were marketed and pedestalized to such a degree that overnight success took on a new meaning. There were many bands of that time that influenced music more that the beatles ever did. In fact it was the begining of the hard core electric ages behind the scenes. But you didn't HEAR about that, because it wasn't marketed right. So by the time it DOES get some recognition. Well, it must have been the Beatles influence. The Beatles were hacks that mimiced well known and used strings of the time, veiling them and covering them in shallow lyrics. For the most part, unoriginal. There was nothing spectacular about thier music that wasn't already around at the time.
It's like highschool. If Sally, the most popular girl in school Bobs her hair, at least a majority who want to fit follow suit until a group forms, this is the way of fads, trends, and all things in that category.
As far as Jimi Hendrix.. Again.. That is just noise.. Hell half the time he was too stoned to play a real cord, so he'd mock it off with some flashy showmanship, and everyone else was too stone to notice and just accepted it as cool, until Jimi Hendrix became "cool", and now it's like taboo for anyone to be a guitar god above Jimi Hendrix.. ANd for anyone to even suggest that there weren't better guitarist in his age?... I mean, come on... Foxy Lady? Dumm dum Daa, Dumm Daa.. Followed by some loud ripping on strings in no particular order... No thanks, I'll stick with Jefferson Airplane, The Four Horsemen, or The Animals...

But it's a good noise. I like Jimi, but then I got to see him play live. I won't go into who's better, but as far as influencing rock guitar playing he's only surpassed by Chuck Barry.
