Okay, I play as a wizard, so I can tell you what thats like.
Things I like:
1. Spells are pretty easy, when you get a new spell level, you get to choose a few starting spells.
2. You get a choice of what familiar you want to summon, and they level up with the caster. You also get to name your familiar, both of these I really like.
3. You can either let the familiar do it's own thing or take control of it, I find it easier to let it do it's own thing.
4. The whole feed, pet, scold, and play with familiar things are in game, and are a lot like Baldur's Gate 2.
5. On normal difficulty setting, AOE spells don't damage party members (It feels like I'm cheating when casting AOEs, but I really like being able to wipe out of room of monsters with a single fireball.)
6. I'm an elf, so I get to use Long Swords, Crossbows, Long Bows without having the normally needed feats. Also I have the ability to search without activating search mode, very nice for finding traps.
7. The ability point system, I like. On other games, you can just keep rerolling stats to make an uber character, I like having a somewhat weak character.
8. You can blow up containers and doors! (With spells too.) All you need a thief for in this game is disarming traps.

Things I don't like:
1. Randomized loot. If you find something nice and then the game crashes, you won't find it in the same box again. (But, then again I understand that it really does add variety to the game.)
2. Saving while summoned monsters are in the party isn't a good idea. (I learned this the hard way, I quicksaved in the Hall of Truth with a Dire Spider summoned and got killed quickly.)
3. No randomized monster summonings like in previous games. When you summon a monster with a spell, it is a set monster.
4. Poor mercenary AI. (Tomi, if you say you are going to pick open that lock, and I move so you can, DON'T FOLLOW ME DAMMIT!)
5. Things you get in the Prelude are only given to one player, it really isn't for MP games.

That's about it. I haven't found too many bugs in the game so far, and I must say the game rocks. If you have the money, and liked Baldur's Gate 2 or Diablo 2, I suggest getting it.

So I go out, thinking to find a copy of Neverwinter Nights.

After visiting 5 places, I came home defeated, and ordered it off Amazon.com. But it wont be here until next Tuesday or so.

I enjoy the point-buy system, even if I also liked the roll system.

With point buy, there's a limit on what your heroes can be. Strong as a bull and tough as nails, but dumber than both. Smart as a tack, dexterous as a cat, but with about as much common sense as a retarded spider monkey.

No adventurer is smarter than the smartest mage, as wise as the gods, quicker than a rat and stronger than a giant

The point-buy system merely makes your characters incapable of being perfect at every little thing they do. Which is why I see Geeorn and Fennar are upset

see, i always liked Organic Character rolling whenever i played in/ran a D&D game. it allows customization without totally overpowering a character.

of course, it's everyone's preference and that's mine.

and btw Parce, having a character that's perfect in "every little way" would be boring. but it'd be nice if i could actually roll my characters rather than having an arbitrary point value.

and, just as reference, here's the stats that i rolled for the character that i used in the Gladiator Competition.
Str 16
Dex 12
Con 16
Int 14
Wis 18
Cha 15

now, this was a level 10 character so there are an extra 2 ability points in there as well. this was an HONESTLY ROLLED CHARACTER that happened to turn out much much better than the norm. that's fine. if i had rolled a set of stats that were average, that would be fine too. i just don't like not having that aspect of chance which has always been a favorite part of playing a D&D game for me.

Normally, I like being able to roll for characters. However, in a game where you might have to work with, or against other player's characters, it just doesn't work.

Point buy is the only way to keep it fair. Yes, you may be able to vouch for yourself and your friends, but don't you want to know that EVERYONE is playing on a fairly level field? At least to start with?

I believe in the existance of magic, not because I have seen proof of its existance, but because I refuse to live in a world where it does not exist.

I got tired of the rolling system right about the time I had to re-roll a character completely for the fifth time because I got like a 5 for Con.

I don't mind rolling if it's not straight, that-has-to-be-what-you-rolled-for-that-stat rolling. Had a DM where you rolled, then you could borrow points from other rolls to even things out.

My favorite by far, however, is the point system. When I made my character Lia, these were her base stats:

Str 16
Dex 18
Con 14
Int 14
Wis 12
Cha 11

Nice and even, a couple good stats, then others that are medium. They work fine for a monk.

They look like this after race and class modifiers, plus the fact that she's now level 14.

Str 24
Dex 19
Con 17
Int 16
Wis 17
Cha 13

The +8 str she got from being a half-dragon, so she was always that strong. But I probably never could have made such a well-rounded character if I'd been stuck doing rolling for stats.

I prefer the hackmaster rolling system 3d6 str, 3d6 dex.. Makes for some intresting characters, but thats just me.

I love rolling, because it (IMO) fits with DnDs "everything boils down to luck" theme.

Also, I tend to roll better then avarage.

I tried that one before, but I didn't really like it. Got the same problem, really. My already weak mage ended up with the high int she should have, but a *very* sickly constitution and we were in a game where you traveled a lot and were exposed to bad things, etc, etc.

a good DM will never let PCs be unfun to play.

But some rolled stats aren't going to lead to a very enjoyable campaign, Fennar. That's the drawback to rolling. You can get a really excellent roll, then get a 2, and you're screwed cause you have to stick with it.

Someone that's constantly holding the group back cause she's just caught another nearly fatal cold and is on the verge of dying again wouldn't be very fun

That's why I ended up re-rolling that character. Finally got a set I could live with, one that wouldn't put my character in mortal peril everytime she went outside.

it's why i like rolling organic stats.

when you plug your stats you can switch a pair of scores like Str-Int, then re-roll the lowest stat.

also, the rolling is 4d6 for each stat where you take out the lowest

so it makes it less likely to end up with really shitty stats

and how many points did you get to create Lia, Lyinar? those stats are a lot better than what you can buy with the points given in NWN

I like the system we use in Fae's campaign. Roll for points, then distribute with the base amount of points in each stat.

Worked out well, for my character anyways.

Got it tonight; just finished showing Aribeth the ID's brain. Level 5 human paladin, and I just got my Greatsword +1.

It pissed me off when my starting greatsword got broken by a Gang Leader just inside the prison.

Hadda go to Wal Mart to get it... EB was sold out.
