Nope...ends with Vision of the Future for me, seems like a good place to stop, the Empire is under Pallaeon and all is well.

Same reaction from me OP. When I'd heard abotu the 'new jedi order' stuff I was psyched. Then the spoiler came out about Chewie and I said fuggit, not interested, and for the exact same reason.

An interview I read said Chewie was okayed because he was the 'most expendable' character. WTF? Same effing reason he didn't get a medal in ANH I bet.. Byotches.

This is where the great dividing line between "old skool" SW fans and "New Age" fans lies, IMO. I know plenty of folks who eat up the whole NJO stuff and have no problems with it. Hell they're pusing to get crap like the Vong into the Star Wars MMOG. Bleah.

So this has absolutely nothing to do with any of the movies, yes?

The movies are the only things I take seriously. (or as seriously as a movie can be taken at any rate.)

The occasional novel will be good, but I've read far too many that just plain suck.

What.. like "The Crystal Star" or "The Courtship of Princess Leia" Blarg..

IMO Zahn and Stackpole are the only two authors who have written a SW novel that portrayed the character with any semblence of depth beyond the movies. Most of the others just turn Han into a 45-50 year old (do the math) bonehead who doesn't lean and keep Luke as the uber-angsty farm boy he was in ANH.

Zahn needs to write a book ending this Vong shit, and it needs to be something like this-

"The jedi found an advantage, TURNING ON THEIR SABERS and not being wusses, then killing weakass writers that should've left this stuff to me. Anyways, yeah, they kicked ass and the Vong left, everyone was happy, SO STOP WRITING DAMN NOVELS MMKAY!!?!!?"

The very first one, written by Alan Dean Foster, was also excellent.

It came out right after the movie, though, and much of the rest of the universe wasn't fleshed out. It's called Splinter of the Mind's Eye, and it's outstanding, if it's still in print.

...if it came out RIGHT after ANH wouldn't it have a bit of Luke/Leia going on?...Ewww, but, does that mean that all the stuff in it corralates to Empire, as in, Lucas wrote some parts of Empire off of it?

If so, please explain the plot of this book.

It has quite a bit of sexual tension between Leia and Luke.

The plot is that she is off to a planet to meet with a group wanting to join the Rebellion. She's flying a Y-Wing with C3PO, and Luke is her escort in an X-Wing.

She has a malfunction, and they have to crash-land on another planet in the target system. Turns out, the Empire has an illegal mining operation near where they crash, and they stumble across a legend of a force-enhancing jewel.

Adventure ensues.

It's really a stand-alone work. I really like it, and I'm not much for works based on movies, or for shared universes in general.

I state once again, I've read upto Vision of the Future (maybe a few past that, I think Darksaber was past that...As was the Crystal Star?) Anways, I thought that VoTF was a PERFECT stopping point. No more, none, kapoot. But, it had to be dragged on for some reason. It's gotta stop somewhere, the main characters are getting up there in age, and even the Die-Harders (book wise) won't keep reading once Luke dies.

So the series takes a radical turn and kills off a few stale characters. OMFG! YOU CAN'T DO THAT!

Guess what, they can. Face it, the entire fucking book series was getting incredibly stale, the Yuuzhan Vong are the first semi-original idea since Timothy Zahn's books.

You're the type of person who reviews a book based on what happens to the characters rather than how the book is in whole, aren't you?

People like that kill all form of book ratings on Amazon and fill the customer reviews with complete bullshit.

It was dragged on for the only reason anything gets dragged on. Dollars, of course. And yes, there will be a host of newer fans who still read after Luke dies, because it'll have taken on an entirely different flavor.

As D said, the series was becoming stale. They couldn't keep younger folks around and old farts like me have other things to do these days. They gave it a shot in the arm, but broke it from the original series in the same moment.

It's a disconnect that'll drop a few folks, but will keep more than that hanging on until the next such disconnect that does the same thing. And if that revision doesn't do it, then they'll just drop the series.

It may suck from a standpoint of being a fan, but SW has become an institution. Institutions in this culture aren't about ideals and pleasing everyone who's been there since the beginning. They're about generating revenues and keeping the institution alive in the minds of as many as possible. :\

Yes I will.

You must not of noticed the shift of main character from Luke to Han/Leia and their kids right around the Corellian trilogy, eh?

I'm not even saying everything should revolve around me, I'm just pointing out that I happen to think in my opinion that these new turn of events suck. This fan is disapointed, why do you care?

No, Harry Potter sucked major ass. It was boring, and stupid.

I don't care that you're disappointed, I care about why you're disappointed.

You are disappointed by the change of the series. Yes or No?

The series was becoming stale. Yes or No?

Short of killing it off, a large change like this was the only way to SAVE the series. Yes or No?

Yes

No, it should have ended. They had a perfect ending spot.

Well yeah, but not in stupid ways, once again, I have to agree with logic on question 3, I don't like it, but something had to be done, albeit in bad ways

Lots of things have perfect ending spots, few things actually end on those spots.

The series could of been redeemed by the New Jedi Order books, had they not been started off by someone with absolutely no fucking experience writing in the genre.

That's my only gripe with NJO.

That's why I avoid shared universe series like the plague--no matter how good the original idea, it's always taken too far and ends up stupid and lame as lesser writers jump on the bandwagon with silly plot ideas.

Look what happnened to Thieves' World: it was awesome for a book or two, then got stupid as everyone and their maiden aunt jumped on the bandwagon, each trying to out-do the others in terms of plotline.

Only Niven's Known Space stories have endured the test of time, because he's so restrictive about who he allows to use his milieu.
